BUT DON’T STOP THERE …
|| By FITSNEWS || The Palmetto State’s mainstream media is all in a tizzy this week over a recommendation to shut down S.C. State University for one year beginning on July 1. The idea – championed by S.C. Rep. Jimmy Merrill – cleared a S.C. House budget subcommittee this week, prompting status quo apoplexy and the playing of more than a few “race cards” (S.C. State is a historically black college).
Really? Racism?
This institution – which recently received an unconstitutional $12 million bailout (masquerading as a “loan”) – should have been shut down a long time ago. And not just because it’s a cesspool of corruption, but because government shouldn’t be subsidizing higher education in the first place.
It’s simply not a core function of government like cops, courts, roads and bridges.
Anyway, when S.C. State received its first taxpayer-funded “loan” for $6 million last May (on top of the tens of millions it is appropriated annually), this website railed against the institution – exposing how this payment wasn’t what University officials claimed it was and how the school’s financial situation was much worse than they were letting on.
We also reiterated that none of these payments were really “loans.”
Even S.C. Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter – one of the school’s staunchest defenders – told The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper last December that the latest bailout wasn’t a loan because “more loans would set up the school for failure.”
“S.C. State cannot repay them,” Cobb-Hunter told the paper.
Exactly … which is why taxpayers shouldn’t keep providing them. Especially not from a surplus fund that should have long ago been rebated to taxpayers (but wasn’t).
“S.C. State has had financial problems for years, yet state lawmakers continue to bail it out using taxpayer funds (while subsidizing its boondoggles … and funding its questionable bureaucratic hires),” we wrote. “When will it stop?”
July 1, if Merrill gets his way … but only for one year. Frankly, the plug needs to be pulled on S.C. State – and South Carolina’s other institutions of “higher” learning – for a lot longer than that.
Sink or swim. It’s as simple as that.
They can keep the land and the buildings taxpayers have so graciously provided them – hell, we’d even give them a ten-year transitionary “grace period” on paying any property taxes – but the spigot must be cut off.
Permanently …

Funny how Sanford sneaked around the back to give SC St. extra funding – while rejecting a Law Enforcement Monument – because the media squealed for him to roll that way…
Now Sanford’s accomplice is bashing SC State…because it’s politically OK….
FITS would have called you a RACIST for opposing State a year ago..now he’s leading the parade of “Racists”…So typical of the pop culture Jockeys, trying to be media these days…LMAO…
I am so glad we got divorced.
Now that is funny I don’t care who ya are.
Thanks….
POTD
I accept…
If FITS and Sanford were married, wouldn’t they be gay? I thought Homosexuals NEVER get divorced…At least that’s what you tell us…
If you follow the posts on,Silverdaddies, there are many Bi and Bi curious men,who love sucking tube steak, and sometimes their wives like to watch…Why get divorced, when you can enjoy the best of both worlds? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiVNsis2h0M
The country needs to focus on the students that will run this country years from now. When you’re in a retirement home, remember who is going to be changing your Depends.
SC State is too big to fail. The draining of a hiring pool of that size would cripple Federal, State, and Local Governments. They would never be able to pay the salaries of folks with a real piece of paper on the wall and the welfare infrastructure would crumble under the weight.
No such thing as “too big to fail”. Look at GM and Enron, GM got bailed out by taxpayers otherwise they would be auctioning off scrap metal and worthless property in Michigan still today.
This is racism. Nutin but da white man holding down the black man. We’s be po fo a reason. We’s can’t manage nuthins. Dat’s why Africa in a state of poverty alls tlda time an why Columbia an Richlans county bees need mo money. Whitey knows we caint survive unless he bees holdin us up an now he gone pull da rug out frum unner us agin.
Nigeria would be a first-world country if a white American was running it. Hate to finally admit it, but it’s true.
This.
Remember the British ran it. Not well but they ran it.
Once they close it down the State should market it as a Tourist Attraction:
Take Exit 69 to downtown Orangeburg and Tour the only certified Black Hole on Earth
Damn, I wish I had said that first.
In the immortal words of the Michael Brown protester, “Shut this bitch down!!!”.
Why would they open it back up? How do they intend to pay for upkeep of buildings and grounds for two years with no income? How will they pay off debt already on the books. Close it down, sell off the property, pay their bills and we’ll have one less worthless university in this state.
As part f his sentence, they should make Pinson mow the lawn, with a pair of scissors.
Elzey sure talks alot about how successful the school is, so why is it a huge failure?
Merrill has guts. And that is a good thing.
Pay attention as this is the first place you will read this:
The deal has been struck.
Mignon Clyburn, daughter of Congressman James Clyburn, will be the next President of SC State. She will make $400,000 a year and the school’s debts will be forgiven by state government. For this service to his daughter, Jim Clyburn will bring in extra funding for Leatherman beloved I73, hence, a quid pro quo.
I wonder how uh, uh Enos uh uh Clyburn would react to the news.
Man, this makes some sense. I have been trying to figure this out for the longest time. the pieces fit. Lets see if it plays out.
They will probably rename it Clyburn State to boot
It’s fitting to have a shitty, corrupt, & half assed university named after him though isn’t it?
Mignon? As in Filet Mignon?
yes literally that is her name
You’re making Sen Corbin’s mouth water.
Leatherman is full of shit, no correct that. His diaper is full of shit.
Sorry, she is too busy at the FCC trying to take federal control of the internet by turning it into public utility. Get ready for a %16 universal fee that all utilities charge to be added to your internet bill, along with state and local taxes, another massive wealth redistribution scheme paid for the middle class. Next she will attempt to follow through on her threat to put FCC monitors in newsrooms to influence their editorial decisions, otherwise known as totalitarianism.
You do know, Dumbass, that the Internet was created BY the federal government.
Much like the dreaded “five year suspension” of a fraternity, a one year suspension of operations at SCSU will kill it. While I generally support Merrill, this will never pass and he knows it.
One wonders why the pandering at this time and on this issue.
If it doesn’t pass, all of those voting against it will be blackballed and labeled as felons. The masses are fed up and getting closer to shaking their fist in a few of their faces, it seems.
I have said all along State should be put under the Citadel. Can’t you see sagging and baggin turned into high and tight ? LOL
Go Jimmy Go.
Move The Citadel there, to a hinterland nowhere. Sell their expensive Charleston campus location to tacky Yankee developers for condos and townhouses for Ohio retirees. Use the mound of money–or that part not stolen by the pols and “players” personally–to reduce some tax on rich people. That’s what Sanford would have done.
Yeah it’s not like the Citadel has any history in Charleston.
SCSU could always convert the dorms into low level private run prison cells. Some inmates could probably return to their old college room and possibly roommate.
History, schmystery. The Citadel is a two-bit “dude factory” just like the rednecks’ hero Tillman said it is/was. It serves no real state purpose beyond what another dorm or two and a few more classrooms and faculty at CofC would accommodate.
I think I would rather have a Citadel grad instead of a fried, drunk skull of mush from CofC.
So if you had your choice of equal employee candidates, would you take the Citadel graduate or the SCSU graduate?
Where did the “so” come from in your random change of subject?
Citadel vs. CofC might have had a glimmer of connection.
Charleston has turned into a fucked up place. Polluted with northerners and their belligerent attitudes.
“turned”, when… about 1868???
Damn, I wish that I had said that too.
Oh hush, you love us yankees.
I do like the idea of firing the administration and the board. But as another poster suggested, an outside “rescue crew” should work to save the school, students, and faculty.
If you have a 2.5 GPA or higher, you can transfer to any other state school. Look out USCe, you’re about to get six new students.
I saw some of the student body lined up up with poorly made signs for WACH last night. The interviews were funny as hell.
The righteous indignation & sense of entitlement was breathtaking, by both staff & students. Some of the student interviews were hysterical. Half of them seemed to be talking with a mouth full of marbles.
Then, at the end, some gentleman associated with the state legislature,(not sure who it was), was interviewed last and said basically(paraphrasing):
“They’ve(SC state) provided us with no plan to fix their finances, none. It’s like they’ve said “It’s your problem, not ours.””
What a cesspool.
You make them sound like natural-born Teabaggers.
Stupidity is not constrained by race or political orientation.
Legislatures have been feeding the criminals with OUR MONEY. Its time to cut off the thieves, liars, crooks, and cheats. Enough of them all, sayeth me!!
Haven’t the feds and SLED been investigating/auditing SCSU since the transportation grant scandal came up? Did they ever finish?
How in the world could where the money is going – the main problem the legislature says it has – NOT be known with that going on?
BTW, the last paragraph…oh, good grief.
Yeah, the Feds are in on it – but Bill Nettles is not only under Jean Toal’s thumb, but also her buddy’s Jim Clyburn’s also. This is not complicated. It’s old fashioned corruption.
Trikki controls SLED…
And, the feds have sent some SCSU board members/employees to prison. Did you miss that?
“ … surplus fund …” ??
Aren’t the “surplus funds” for offsetting sudden emergencies and bailing out extreme conditions like hurricanes and earthquakes?
We note that any surpluses in the SC state Gruberment budgets are supposed to be “rebated” to SC taxpayers. … But, hey, if the schools really need ‘em …
Couldn’t Clemson float them a loan from the $100 million slush fund Barker ran up?
SCSU is an extension or land-grant school too: make Clemson merge with them.
Shut down Carolina while you’re at it.Fits could be the poster-child for that brain-dead institution…
MAYBE, just MAYBE, we could follow the example of the Tar Heel State a LOOOOOONG time ago, and put ALL of the “state-supported” schools under a Chancellor, who would run ALL of them. POWER??? YOU BETCHA!!!
Responsibility? YOU BETCHA AZZ!! See if Ol’ buddy Glen would want that job.
“Really? Racism? ”
You would certainly know that is for damn sure. And before I even opened the article I knew the usual dumbasses that would be on here posting their pitiful racist crap.
Get a life, losers.
since when is roads and bridges a core function of government?!? libertarian my a$$
Attention minorities #!!!! Keep not showing up at the polls lawmakers are gonna have every minority back on the plantations. File a lawsuit in federal court thats the only option.
The only lawsuit filed is going to be against the criminals that have been looting the school for almost a decade now. 500 million dollar lawsuit, get the eff outta here with that noise. Any judge is going to laugh in ya’ll faces. For what, giving SC State millions from hardworking taxpayers? Did the legislature force you to hire the arch-criminal Johnathan Pinson? Have you done any reaserch whatsoever into how the school got into this position? Where is the 50 million for the Clybum traspo center? Why is the graduation rate %13.7? And by the way, threatening to burn Columbia to the ground is the dumbest move yet–you have turned anyone with any sympathy for the school against you with that idiocy. If that comment is indicative of the alumni, then pull all state funding and let them support you. I felt sympathetic yesterday, after reading that nonsense, you lost me.
The SCSU alumnus’ inflammatory remarks regarding a metaphorical threat of “Sherman’s March on Columbia” and a “$500M lawsuit” aimed at the S.C. Legislature were both self-defeating and unfortunate. This oft’ used and predictable mentality of ” burn, loot, and sue” is part of the problem; and certainly not a solution thereto. My personal knowledge of the legislative body is that these type of remarks will only galvanize its opposition to any reasonable and well thought out solution, and justifiably so. My experience is that such emotionally charged statements inevitably result in a response of a like-kind from a body that holds all the cards ($$$). Nobody wins a “p-ssing contest “as there are not degrees of “p-ssed on”. Rather, at the end, you are both just wet. Not a smart move at all sir!!
Attention Minorities, act like first world people, pay your bills and don’t commit violent crime and you won’t be back on the plantation.
“[T]he plug needs to be pulled on S.C. State –
and South Carolina’s other institutions of ‘higher’ learning – for a
lot longer than that.”
So, Fits, you are advocating the closure of the University of South Carolina, Clemson University, et al.?
No, he is saying stop taxpayers funding them. Read.
I keep hearing Gilda’s name in other places. Wonder whats up?
Looks like they have run out of other people’s money. Dims do that a lot.
Get ready to call out the National Guard. Think we might have a crazy situation there very soon.
Hope they get to inflict some hickory shampoos.
If they shut down SC State what annual cupcake is Clemson going to play in football?
