|| By FITSNEWS || While South Carolina’s law enforcement community continues to wage a senseless war on medical marijuana, there is growing acceptance that the drug provides tangible health benefits to patients.
Hell, even the U.S. Surgeon General admits as much …
“We have some preliminary data showing that for certain medical conditions and symptoms, medical marijuana can be helpful,” newly installed Surgeon General Vivek Murthy told CBS this week, adding “you have to use that data to drive policy-making.”
Indeed … which is why S.C. Senator Tom Davis and State Rep. Jenny Horne are pushing legislation that would greatly expand the state’s medical marijuana statutes (legislation we have enthusiastically embraced).
Twenty-three states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes. Four states – Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington – have legalized pot for recreational purposes, although an effort has been made to tax it to death.
Also, it’s nice to hear an appointee of U.S. president Barack Obama make such a comment in light of his administration’s dangerously hypocritical prior positions on medical marijuana. Obama has since declared that marijuana decriminalization – for medical or recreational purposes – is an issue that should be left up to the states.
We have consistently maintained that American adults should have the right to produce, distribute, sell or consume any drug they wish … operating on the belief that individual liberty and the free market should trump government’s desire to moralize and over-regulate.
Furthermore, we believe commercial activity associated with decriminalized drugs should be regulated and taxed in a manner consistent with the way alcohol is regulated and taxed. Perhaps even less stringently. Pot certainly shouldn’t be assigned an “extra” tax simply because elected officials at the local, state and federal level are failing miserably in their efforts to prioritize core functions of government.
The “War on Drugs” has been a costly, demonstrable failure … it’s time to reverse that failed policy and pursue the decriminalization of marijuana and other drugs for medical, recreational and commercial purposes.

Marijuana is a “Wonder Drug” for Cancer patients, for Kids who suffer from Seizures, and for so many diseases of so many kinds.
Its a fast and highly effective pain reliever, and its incredibly safe. Its the only painkiller that users can safely self-tirate over a wide range and is the only painkiller that is physically impossible to overdose on.
Its a rapid acting and incredibly safe and effective anti-depressant — it doesn’t takes weeks to start working like SSRIs, and rather than increasing the chances of its users committing suicide, a real problem when young people are given SSRIs, it reduces suicide rates.
When used recreationally, its far safer than Alcohol, and infinitely safer than Cigarettes. Its helped countless people detox from Alcohol and hard drugs and not relapse on them.
Marijuana, and its cousin, Hemp, feed the hungry (Hemp for food and Hemp animal feed), heal the sick (Medical Marijuana), clothe the naked (Hemp Fabric), and house the homeless (HempCrete building materials).
Marijuana oil may have been the “miracle” healing oil used in biblical times and talked about in the bible.
Its easy and cheap to grow and can be easily processed into food, medicine, clothing, paper, and housing supplies, at very low cost, with very little equipment, and that’s incredibly important in the third world.
For Cancer patients, and for the entire world, its truly a “Gift from God”
Of course. However “normal” kids also smoke it, which too often is a net negative for their lives and life style … as is booze.
To “sell” pot as a medical solution is one thing. If chemotherapeutic were pleasant and occasionally inspiring, it could be the drug of choice instead.
Too much of any good thing is almost always destructive.

I’m a Scientist with a strong interest in Cancer research. The evidence of the value of Marijuana as a life saving medicine is now so strong that the need to remove Marijuana from Schedule 1 has become a moral imperative.
This weekend over 3,000 Americans will die, in pain, of Cancer. Every day after that, 1,500 more Americans will die, after suffering horribly, from it. Oncologists have know it for more than a quarter of a Century that Marijuana is a “wonder drug” for helping Cancer patients.

Thank you for posting this. I signed on to pain management from cancer, and had to give it up, otherwise they will withhold medical treatment for pain –the two or three puffs a day so i can eat. I have lost 30 pounds since then. And not in a good way–it is from going entire days without eating at all. Electrolytes all messed up, anemic, etc. Sucks.
But I don’t take FITS position of across the board legalization of the heavy stuff, we simply need common sense drug policy, with categories based on science not political grandstanding. I lived in NYC during the late 80s crack epidemic, if you can call it that. I saw things that most people will never see in their worst nightmare, just walking down the street. And when they inevitably show up in emergency rooms, with gaping abscesses all their body, mouths burned, gruesome things growing out of them–we all pay. And the city paid dearly, entire areas destroyed from it. It came in little plastic vials, you would walk down into the subway and they would crunch under your feet. And then step over a half-dead person laying on the filthy ground. Until you see it, you wouldn’t believe it. So T-Rav doing some lines in his upper class milieu is not representative of what cocaine does to people. The reality is demonic.

After years of Legalize It activism from NORML, it ended up being a Republican who pushed through to get the tincture available in South Carolina for that suffering girl with epilepsy. I hope they can get approval for Epidiolex as soon as possible. The whole Colorado thing really clouded things, but I guess someone had to go first with wider legalization. Hippies do themselves no favors with this issue. If the professionals, responsible adults, and contributing citizens who use it to ease anxiety and garden variety aches and pains instead of alcohol, xanax, SSRI anti-depressants, porn, gambling, whatever people use to combat the extreme stress of the past few years would step up, that would also help give a better public face to the reform movement. But when FITS and others advocate we have a free-for-all drug policy, it really doesn’t help. It is not all or nothing. And it is counter-productive to suggest so. The expensive incarceration of people who get busted for having a few plants in their yard has got to end. Interesting that harsh criminalization for cultivation turns someone from a person with a green thumb and a peaceful hobby into a dangerous criminal, while illegal alien criminals walk free, and people who kill their own kids get less time than a ‘trafficker.’

I had a good friend die several years ago from colon cancer. He told me the marijuana was better than the pergosets. Something about it being easier on his system which by that time was a shambles any way. He made me see marijuana in a new light. That and the ruined lives the “war on drugs” has caused is enough to change about anyone. I say we decriminalize it like yesterday.

They will withhold pain meds if I test positive. Pain management that is, you are correct that when pain was only under the control of my oncologist, it never came up. But if I had told him, you better believe they would have looked at ANY pain complaints as ‘drug seeking.’
BrigidBernadette, I wish you the best and hope you can get any treatment that might help. I believe that marijuana eases pain, nausea and improves appetite. It may treat or ease other symptoms.
There is, however, little evidence that it cures anything. I don’t who Jeff deutsch is. He has a discussion account. I have found the same comments post all over the country. When I tied to google searched for the “Berkeley” study of marijuana, I didn’t find anything but his comments. That is not surprising since Berkeley is not technically the name of any college or university. They are hoping you will assume they are referring to University of California, Berkeley. I haven’t confronted him, but I think he is a fake.
Please post your experiences on every article you can find on the web, call the whitehouse comment line and tell them and email the president. The more people know the truth, the sooner every Cancer patient in the US will be able to have safe, legal, access to the benefits of Medical Marijuana.

We shouldn’t deny medical treatment to people because some use that substance recreationally. Recreational users will get cannabis regardless. For the last few decades even over 80% of high school seniors have reported that cannabis is “easy to get”.
In all honesty, if some medical cannabis ends up being used by recreational users, this is not a bad thing. It is better they buy product that has been professionally produced with quality controls from licensed establishments rather than support a crime-ridden underground market that would not hesitate to sell hard drugs.

Every Cancer patient that’s benefited from Medical Marijuana should post that fact as widely as they can, and should call the whitehouse comment line and write an email to the President telling him about it. The more he knows the truth, the faster he’ll act to change the law to allow Physicians to prescribe Medical Marijuana the same they do every other Medication.

Where is your evidence that the ASCO voted in support is removing marijuana from Schedule 1. These are the only claims I’ve tried to track and find no evidence for.

As far as the suggestions that cannabis kills cancer cells, believe me, people come out of the woodwork suggesting the craziest things, otherwise known as scientific ‘woo,’ and it is surprising the number of people that believe peach pits, injecting hydrogen peroxide into the blood, and a litany of other remedies for cancer exist, they are just being held back by Big Pharma so they can continue to make money from chemo, goes the argument. Most of that stuff goes back to Jeff Rense and the early days of the internet, and is carried on by snake-oil creeps like Dr. Oz. However, having said that, it does not rule out that a natural substance may unlock an unknown polymerase that attacks cancer cells. Until recently, research couldn’t even be conducted because it would mean producing, obtaining, and utilizing MJ, which was the issue with MUSC and the seizure research. BUT again, throwing that into the mix when addressing the use of medical MJ for neuropathic pain or nausea is again further clouding the issue, and runs the risk of discrediting the whole argument. It would be more effective to leave out conjecture and focus exclusively on the humane relief and mercy for suffering patients, period. Other valid points he makes get lost and rejected by the inclusion of what sounds like woo, but may not be in the long run. As with any effective political movement, it has to be precise and sound for it to gain traction and ultimately prevail.
As much as I wish that cures would be found for purely altruistic reasons, profit is the driving force. Clinical studies are expensive. Currently there is no way for a company to profit from studying a natural product that can’t be patented. It’s also difficult to profit from a new use of a drug when the patent has already expired.
If we could find a way in which companies could profit they would conduct clinical studies.

I found an ASCO paper touting the pain releaf of marijuana, but it required membership to read. I never found them voting to remove it as a schedule 1 drug.
I knew three people who died from lung cancer.All from smoking cigarettes.They had easy access to pot but didn’t want it.Marijuana increases appetite,but doesn’t kill pain.If anything,it exacerbates pain.It should be legalized,but doctors and government should stay out,except for decriminalization/legalization so,no matter why you want it,you can get it.Calling it Medical Marijuana is a sham,just like you.
