Nikki Haley Versus Nepotism? Really?

GOVERNOR WEIGHS IN ON CONTROVERSIAL JUDICIAL RACE

|| By FITSNEWS || We always like it when people “pick up what we’re throwing down” Or “smell what we’re stepping in” (as the expression goes here in the Palmetto State).

So naturally we should be thrilled that the governor of our state – Nikki Haley – has joined us in questioning whether a legislator’s spouse should be elected to a powerful judicial branch appointment (by the legislator’s colleagues in the S.C. General Assembly, no less).

We’re referring of course to the upcoming judicial election between S.C. administrative law judge Carolyn Matthews and Bill Funderburk – husband of S.C. Rep. Laurie Slade Funderburk.  You know … an insider race which we kind of turned into a “thing.”

Anyway, Haley addressed the issue during a speech in Anderson County, S.C. this week – but we’re told she plans to expound on her remarks in the coming days.

“She apparently is going to make (voting) for Funderburk a test of how broken the system is,” one source with knowledge of the governor’s plans tells FITS.

Wow …

Haley addressed the race on social media, too.

“It is a major conflict of interest when a legislator’s spouse is allowed to run,” Haley wrote.  “If Funderburk … is elected a judge next week, it will be one more example of cronyism in the Statehouse. Enough of the old guard way of doing things. Contact your legislators and tell them NO this is wrong. We will definitely be showing the votes on this race.”

We don’t say this often, but we agree with Haley (well, more to the point she agrees with us) … but again … does she have a leg to stand on here?

Duh … of course not.

Once again, Haley is practicing the whole “do as I say, not as I do” school of politics.  Which is nothing new for those of you regular readers.

Haley has proposed income disclosure for lawmakers – even though she failed to disclose more than $40,000 she received from a company doing business before the state.  She’s proposed consolidating ethics cases under an independent agency – even though she relied on a corrupt committee of her former peers to evade conviction on a wide range of public corruption charges.  She’s pushed for mandatory recusals from office – even though she failed to recuse herself from votes benefiting her secret employer.  She’s demanded reforms to the state’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) – even though her administration illegally deleted emails and deliberately withheld public information from reporters.  And she’s asked lawmakers to correct a flawed election law that resulted in hundreds of candidates being booted from the 2012 ballot – even though she co-authored the statute with her longtime ally, S.C. Rep. Nathan Ballentine.

Now she wants to rail on nepotism?  After she’s also been caught “keeping it in the family” herself?

Please …

Again, we agree with Haley on all these various “ethics reform” issues … the only difference?  We don’t have to pray for lightning not to strike us when we talk about them …

Oh … and unlike Haley, we don’t get on board with “ethics reform” bills that would actually make things worse.

Every time I see Michael Haley in a military uniform I want to puke. He is a civilian employee. While he is entitle to wear a uniform he should show respect for the real hero and wear a suit, the uniform of a first gentleman.
Red neck pig, that one is.

“”Haley has proposed income disclosure for lawmakers – even though she failed to disclose more than $40,000.””
WHAT? She also proposed a gas tax increase but continues to pay the lower current tax. What a hypocrite. We all should obey the laws we want not the one that exist.

“”She’s proposed consolidating ethics cases under an independent agency – even though she relied on a corrupt committee of her former peers to evade conviction””
What a hypocrite. She should’ve unilaterally without legislative approval create her own “independent agency” to invest herself.

Nepotism. The harm that could come from legislators lobbying for their close relative for the relatively unimportant job of administrative law judge is nothing compared to the damage that could come from have the wrong person at the state house gift shop. What if someone asks her to translate the Latin on the state seal and she can’t answer? Nikki is a hypocrite for not proposing the same safeguards for hiring a gift shop clerk as for a judge.

People become millionaires in a variety of ways. It’s one of the marvelous advantages of the free market system. You will have to be more specific and state known facts for the specific case.

There have been many articles recently that show that our legislators make in the neighborhood of $40K once you add in ALL the money they collect. Not bad for a part-time job. The $40K figure does not even included a calculation for the worth of the pension and healthcare benefits they collect.

The governor make 106K, and she gets to live in a house rent free with all the utilities paid and her food provided for her and her family. She has zero household expenses, she gets driven everywhere she goes and the “staff” even drive her kids to school for her? Given all the “perks” I think it would be safe to say the “value” of her salary would be somewhere between 200-250K, maybe more.

Does it bother anyone that Nikki Haley preaches smaller government yet her entire family holds government jobs?

People don’t get that kind of hypocrisy in ANY Republican.

Bible Thumper January 31, 2015 at 12:18 pm

200 – 250k puts her in line with most of the private sector executives. Of course they usually have a longer career and get stock options.

Yeah, and they are held to a much higher performance standard. Had she been at the helm of a private company that got hacked and lost all their employee and customer data she would have been sacked.

Bible Thumper February 2, 2015 at 3:57 am

ROH! ROH! You said it buddy.
Wait! Oh really?
It’s been over a month now since the Sony hack. Even with racist emails ridiculing Obama and gender discrimination issues, no executive has been fired or demoted although there has been speculation. A quick Google search and I can find only one executive fired or resigned for a hacking breach. Target executive Gregg Steinhafel resigned, but other reasons were also given for his resignation. In fact, the Forbes article indicates that the Target resignation was unique and non IT executives had not previously been punished for hacking breaches. I have not found any since either.

Eight years at $109,080 with very few expenses and $60,000 from her husband a few investments. Voi·là! a millionaire. I would be embarassed, if a governor wasn’t a millionaire after serving eight years unless it was going to charity. Otherwise she would have to be pretty wasteful or a poor investor.

I wouldn’t label the poor lazy. There are plenty of lazy rich people by inheritance or marriage and poor people by some disadvantage.
I have always found that if I needed a job, it increases my chances if I ask a person wealthier than me. Think how many would be without jobs if it wasn’t for rich people.

The question is: How did an unemployed overweight male get a job with the SCNG with a direct commission as a first lieutenant? Could a certain former State Representative use her influence with the Adjutant General to obtain this position. This makes her an Army wife and enhances her credentials in this pro-military state.
