Half Of U.S. Government-Run School Population Is Low Income

BUT HEY … LET’S TRY “MORE GOVERNMENT” AGAIN!

|| By FITSNEWS || Remember how we said Americans were hurting?  Especially black Americans?  And how it was all due to “spreading the wealth around?”  And how that was, well, no good?

Yeah … here’s the latest evidence of all that …

According to a new report from the left-leaning Southern Education Foundation, more than half of all students in America’s failed government-run education system are now classified as “low income” – meaning their parents’ poor financial standing qualifies them for free or reduced lunches.  By comparison, this number stood at 32 percent back in 1989.

(Not) shockingly, the group compiling the data views the obvious answer to the problem as “more government.”

“Without improving the educational support that the nation provides its low income students – students with the largest needs and usually with the least support — the trends of the last decade will be prologue for a nation not at risk, but a nation in decline,” the group’s vice president Steve Suitts said.

Huh? “Educational support?”

We hate to break it to this guy but as William Shakespeare once wrote, “what’s past is prologue.”  Or in modern parlance, “look in the friggin’ rearview mirror dude.”

Decades of “more government” is precisely what has run our country into this ditch … and it is precisely what is compounding the problem today.  Seriously, only a brain dead leftist could look at the ongoing evisceration of the American middle class (due to rampant welfare statism and crony capitalism) and say “more government” is what’s needed.

“More government” is only driving income levels lower … exacerbating poverty and dependency.

In fact it’s currently gobbling up our “recovery” as we speak …

For those of you keeping score at home, 58 percent of South Carolina children currently attending government-run schools qualify as “low-income.”  Which is obviously above the national average (and that’s before we address the Palmetto State’s above-average percentage of children stuck in the government-run system).

And yes … “more government” hasn’t worked here either.

Just think about how many parents are both driving $40k SUV’s with their $800/month(each) payments, living in their $500k McMansion…and then send their kids to ghetto school.

At least they look good to their neighbors though…priorities right?

This is not exactly “news”.

Since almost half the workers in this country get food stamps, it is little wonder that half the school kids are “low income”.

So, how does one get out of “poverty”? Demand a whooping big tax cut from Gruberment, for one.

Here is an option: donate your food stamps to your school cafeteria … so the kids can get some decent food at lunch, not the hay and oats and gruel Michelle wants to give ’em.

Apparently you’ve forgotten your Catechism – possibly distracted by an amorous priest? The bible is very specific – it’s not voluntary… anyone who thinks that mercy is “voluntary” is going straight to hell without collecting 200 dollars… according to the bible… or don’t you consider that to be an authority without the possibility of escaping?

If you think you are coerced by the IRS when you don’t pay what you owe, wait’ll you get an eyeful of the punishment awaiting you if you don’t show mercy to the poor.

You know, when you go to war, and you refuse to fight, your commanding officer is likely to shoot you in the head for deserting.. would you call that “voluntary service?” That’s small beer compared to what Jesus has prepared for those who are holding onto the hope of heaven without the work the spirit *requires* of you.

How about that, Mr. “Christian?”

Your “voluntary” actions are no more “voluntary” than if you were sold into slavery.

When that sinks in, get back to me, pastor.

Give them money or die January 31, 2015 at 6:55 am

Yes, yes-all that’s fine and good for Christians…but let us not forget it’s not man’s place to act as “God”.

It’s tyranny to “force” others to do what he thinks is right if their actions are not responsible for hurting others, especially in the name of “God”.

It is this attitude you present that gives Republicans their self righteous notion that we should forcing Muslims to live in “our” way just as much as it is for Dems to force/extract money from people to do what they think is right.

Stop conflating the role of God and man.

Let’s rewind on your original statement for a moment since you really didn’t address the issue in your diatribe above:

“The bible is very specific – it’s not voluntary… anyone who thinks that mercy is “voluntary” is going straight to hell without collecting 200 dollars”

Wrong.

You’re or normally a smart individual, but like all of us, fallible. The above statement you made is 100% wrong.

If you are a believer in God, GIVING IS 100% VOLUNTARY.

There that whole issue of “Free will” involved. Or are you a “predestination” guy?

Assuming for a moment you believe in the concept of free will, God has no choice but allows us to make our own decisions.

What he’s done is said, paraphrasing, “If you don’t give to the poor you’re gonna burn”.

That’s a lot different than your claim that it’s not voluntary. In fact, your claim is utter bullshit.

Now that being said, since you made the claim I’m a “sociopath”, let’s get one thing straight:

I like giving to the poor. But I’m going to do it under MY terms. I’m not going to do it under the terms of a corrupt & mismanaged organization that hasn’t balanced a budget in 44 years and has no idea what people can or can’t give individually.

Assuming you’re a believer, there’s only ONE entity that can know what’s in our hearts and what is appropriate for giving, and that’s God.

euwe max February 2, 2015 at 11:45 pm

“The bible is very specific – it’s not voluntary… anyone who thinks that mercy is “voluntary” is going straight to hell without collecting 200 dollars”

——

Nope. The devil believes in God too.

What you don’t seem to understand is free will is not permission to dodge your responsibilities. In the same way as you are instructed, *required* to pay your taxes.. although you are given the “opportunity” not to, you are not free to *not* pay your taxes… you are instructed, *required* to give to the poor by Jesus.

Here, let me help you along….

Matthew 25:31-46King James Version (KJV)

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

========

You see? Just like the IRS… free will didn’t excuse you… it was not “voluntary” – even if you thought it was.

Matthew 7:21-23

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Now that being said, since you made the claim I’m a “sociopath”, let’s get one thing straight.
I like giving to the poor. But I’m going to do it under MY terms

——

Not a problem… do all things that please you for all I care – that’s a sociopathic idea… but Jesus commanded believers to live by *his* terms, not yours… whether you want to believe it or not… believers have the law written in their hearts, and are commanded by it, not by what “feels good.”

My only gripe with Republicans is they don’t believe that they should pool their resources to help their fellow man, and cooperate with all others to give to the poor… if it doesn’t feel good, they aren’t interested…

how does that cross and crown of thorns fit now?

Giving to the poor is not optional.

Give them money or die February 3, 2015 at 8:28 am

“You see? Just like the IRS… free will didn’t excuse you… it was not “voluntary” – even if you thought it was.”

So, you’re a predestination guy?

That’s a lot of quotation refuting a claim I never made, “free will didn’t excuse you”, specifically.

“Giving to the poor is not optional.”

The evidence around us shows this statement to be false.

“My only gripe with Republicans is they don’t believe that they should pool their resources to help their fellow man, and cooperate with all others to give to the poor… if it doesn’t feel good, they aren’t interested…”

I can’t speak for Republicans. I can tell you though you circle the issue of “voluntary”, probably because at it’s heart you don’t like emphasizing that CONTROL/lack of freedom is necessary to enact your world view.

On a human level, here on earth, you are suggesting the elected(or otherwise), in part by many stupid people, are those fit to force others to do what you think is right.

It’s really preposterous to argue against the freedom of man, but that is is essence your argument, born out of a pathological altruism.(not withstanding that even God has to allow freedom of choice, he gives consequences instead)

While on one hand, I understand your concern for the poor, on the other it’s quite clear that you have not fully grasped the nature of gov’t and its limitations(which are derived by man himself), in direct contradiction to your own beliefs(I’m not a Christian) that routinely reinforce the sinful state of man, making it impossible for any institution of his justly lord over other men.

Give them money or die February 3, 2015 at 8:31 am

I should add this, I misspoke when I said “God has to” in once sense for many believers, in that he doesn’t. He allows choice because otherwise it would make us automatons. (and most predestination believers seem to believe that for the most part)

euwe max February 3, 2015 at 1:42 pm

“You see? Just like the IRS… free will didn’t excuse
you… it was not “voluntary” – even if you thought it was.”
………..

———–
I don’t know how you got *that*… predestination isn’t even
related to being obedient. Predestination has to do with “it doesn’t matter, so you might as well not worry about it.”

That’s a lot of quotation refuting a claim I never made, “free will didn’t excuse you”, specifically.

———
Free will doesn’t mean what you think it does.

“Giving to the poor is not optional.”
………..

The evidence around us shows this statement to be false.

——–
No… it’s evidence of disobedience, not voluntary giving. You have obedience and free will confused. Heroin use doesn’t mean it’s not against the law, or that you won’t be jailed for it.

“My only gripe with Republicans is they don’t believe that
they should pool their resources to help their fellow man, and cooperate with all others to give to the poor… if it doesn’t feel good, they aren’t interested…”
………

I can’t speak for Republicans. I can tell you though you circle the issue of “voluntary”, probably because at it’s heart you don’t like emphasizing that CONTROL/lack of freedom is necessary to enact your world view.

———–
I guess you didn’t read my message after all. It was *all about* control! Commandments, obedience, and punishment. External discipline becoming internal discipline. Craftsmen understand it. Kim Kardashian, not so much.

On a human level, here on earth, you are suggesting the elected(or otherwise), in part by many stupid people, are those fit to force others to do what you think is right.

———-
There’s no choice for civilization. It’s either white lines, stop signs, and speed limits, or little Emily will die.

It’s really preposterous to argue against the freedom of man, but that is essence your argument, born out of a pathological altruism.(not withstanding that even God has to allow freedom of choice, he gives consequences instead)

———–
Well, you do understand that a heroin addict stealing and
killing to feed his habit, or a child molester who has sex with little children, killing them so they can’t tell – believes he is partaking of the “freedom of man.” Freedom and discipline go hand in hand.. if you don’t have discipline, it will be applied to you by those you harm, or by nature if you aren’t paying attention. Freedom isn’t what you think it is.

———–
Whatever… in the future… I suggest you leave the preaching to the crazies. You don’t know scripture well enough to argue what Jesus meant, what obedience means or what he said happens to you if you turn away from life in pursuit of “freedom.” Stick with the “If it makes me feel good, it’s *got* to be the greatest good for the greatest number.”

“Look ma! I can gouge my own eyes out, and God is powerless to stop me!”

Carspiv January 31, 2015 at 2:34 pm

28k a year with one child is considered living in poverty? And a family of 4 making 42,600 is poor too?

Students eligible for subsidized school lunches come from families who are in poverty or just above it. A child living with a single parent would qualify if the family’s income was less than $28,000. A family of four would receive free or reduced lunches if their income was less than $42,600.

The current system separates rich and poor. The wealthy can either afford to live in a good district or they send their kids to private school. Most of the poor are stuck in failing schools. Often that means our schools are de facto segregated.

Because in Lake Woebegone, the majority of the families had parents who worked at high-skilled manufacturing jobs outside of Minneapolis. Most worked for unions, which ensured higher wages. Then, the parents had higher incomes, and thus, fewer kids in the poverty level. Then again, it could explain why the poverty rate in MN is half that of SC.

Pareto efficiency, if you buy into that, is a free market effect. What the government does for those at the bottom is a different story altogether. I would hope the consensus is that every kid deserves a reasonably fair shot to do better for themselves whether they take advantage of it or not. I assume you don’t want to just throw these kids out on the street? Maybe you just don’t like the thought of your kids rubbing shoulders with those other kids (while simultaneously decrying elitism/cronyism out of the other side of your mouth), so your answer is to believe the fantasy that there is some magic non government school solution that will make all these kids perk up into self directed capitalists, knowing that it’s really just an attempted escape valve for your precious youngins from the lower caste so they’ll have a better shot at the crony class that you didn’t quite crack. Or maybe not. Who knows.

Maybe it’s just acceptance that some are destined to be ground into fertilizer regardless of the opportunities they get; paid for by others or not. It’s not a pleasant reality…but reality none the less.

Pareto, yo January 29, 2015 at 6:19 pm

Well, we’re all destined for that. But before that happens, yes, things are going to shake out how they shake out, and it’s clearly never going to be to everyone’s liking. That said, folks do deserve a fighting chance to do whatever it is they’re going to do with their lives, and that’s to society’s benefit as a whole anyway. People on the upper strata shouldn’t belly ache about doing their part to provide that chance, just as people at the bottom shouldn’t belly ache when life doesn’t reward them as much as it did others.

“People on the upper strata shouldn’t belly ache about doing their part to provide that chance”

Why not? They are being forced to contribute. They should be able to belly ache all they want. Anything the bottom gets is is a blessing, they have “a fighting chance” in a free society-they might not recognize it though. Trust me on that, I came up dirt, DIRT poor.

This would not be a problem if we had tax credits to pay for private school All those low income families would use their tax credits to put their children in private school.

How much is 2 unfunded wars, Medicare Part D, preferential tax treatment for the rich, corporate/agricultural welfare sucking the life out of our progress? You haven’t even started paying for these wars BTW. And so in the end, these issues are about “more government”–except nobody on the right out how to pay the bills–or cared. It’s about WRONG government. And, you starve districts for funding/resources (read ‘Corridor of Shame”) then start throwing blame at gov’t? Well, oddly, I agree, gov’t should be blamed for failing these children–all while the proud, righteous, and “right” blame poor children and families for poor outcomes. You scream education is a local issue. Well, local here starts at the state house.

Government can’t replace the family, but it has tried with disastrous results. Educators tell parents that they are the experts and parents accept that and give up their responsibilities. If you want to know how a kid will do in school study the family. If you want to know how government policies can destroy families, study the welfare system.

Jonathan Swift said it best in his essay on The Irish Question; children make a tasty meal when properly prepared. And once the children are consumed, the parents should be composted and used to fertilize the fields of the working agriculturalists. Obviously, the old and infirm would have far more on which to subsist. There are several on this board who would make excellent fodder, save that the product would contain too much manure, and destroy the Ph balance.

Read the article in WaPo about the teacher in CO and educational privilege. Do you feel angry, sad, ashamed, or do you blame this on what you have identified as “those people”–the “other”, “them”, “the takers, and they get what they earned”. How easily do you turn your back, avert your gaze, explain it away? How easily do,you live knowing others pain?

Great! Let’s unstick some of these impoverished kids and send them to Heathwood, Hammond, Christ Church, Porter Gaud, and a few of the others and see if we can fix this. After they pick them up from home, feed them, learn ’em, then take them back home everyday, we can watch the free market school system work. For their troubles the schools will get reimbursed at the going state rate. Of course you have to take any that want to come – at least up to a reasonable number, say 15% to 20% of total enrollment.

Would we have any takers from the administrators of these fine schools?

Stage I: primary school (ages 6–8)

Thomas Jefferson proposed creating several five- to six-square-mile-sized school districts, called “wards” or “hundreds”, throughout Virginia, where “the great mass of the people will receive their instruction”. Each district would have a primary school and a tutor who is supported by a tax on the people of the district. Every family in the district would be entitled to send their children to the school for three years, free of charge.

These schools would teach “reading, writing, and arithmetic”; the “general notions of geography”; as well as Grecian, Roman, European and American history. It was important that all children learn history because “apprising them of the past will enable them to judge of the future.” According to Jefferson, “the principal foundations of future order will be laid here” and “the first elements of morality too may be instilled into [the children’s] minds”.

Jefferson opposed providing children in these schools religious texts, since he believed the children would be “at an age when their judgments are not sufficiently matured for religious enquiries”. However, he was in favor of showing the children that happiness “does not depend on the condition of life in which chance has placed them, but is always the result of a good conscience, good health, occupation, and freedom in all just pursuits.”

“There is a certain period of life, say from eight to fifteen or sixteen years of age, when the mind, like the body, is not yet firm enough for laborious and close operations. If applied to such, it falls an early victim to premature exertion; exhibiting indeed at first, in these young and tender subjects, the flattering appearance of their being men while they are yet children, but ending in reducing them to be children when they should be men.” – Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia

Stage II: intermediate school (ages 9–16)

Each year, an official would visit the Fayoy school and choose one boy — a boy whose parents were too poor to provide their child further education — to continue on for at least one or two (and possibly up to eight) years at one of the Commonwealth’s twenty grammar schools.

In the grammar schools, children would learn Greek and Latin; advanced geography; the higher branches of numerical arithmetic;geometry; and the elementary principles of navigation.

Jefferson believed that a child’s memory is the most active between the ages of 8 and 16 years. As he thought that learning languages mostly involved memorizing, he thought this period was the ideal time to learn “the most useful languages ancient and modern.” Linguists have found that people learn additional languages more readily if starting at a younger age. Jefferson thought this age group was also best able to acquire mental “tools for future operation”, including “useful facts and good principles”. He warned that “if this period be suffered to pass in idleness, the mind [would become] lethargic and impotent, as would the body it inhabits if unexercised during the same time.”

After about two years, the “best genius” from each grammar school would be selected to continue another six years studying these subjects, while the rest would be dismissed. According to Jefferson, “By this means twenty of the best geniuses will be raked from the rubbish annually, and be instructed, at the public expense, so far as the grammar schools go.”

By that part of our plan which prescribes the selection of the youths of genius from among the classes of the poor, we hope to avail the state of those talents which nature has sown as liberally among the poor as the rich, but which perish without use, if not sought for and cultivated.”

Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia

Stage III: university (ages 17–19)

At the end of grammar school, one half of the boys would be dismissed. This half would include future grammar school masters. The other half, “chosen for the superiority of their parts and disposition,” would continue studying three more years at the university, “in the study of such sciences as they shall choose”. Jefferson considered the university to be the capstone of the educational system. To accommodate the influx of students, Jefferson proposed that the College of William and Mary be enlarged “and extended to all the useful sciences”.
