Robert Romano: Is The GOP Senate Already Caving?

BILL TO BLOCK OBAMA’S “EXECUTIVE AMNESTY” FACES UNCERTAIN FUTURE

|| By ROBERT ROMANO || “We’re going to try to pass it.”

That was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) January 15 take on House-passed legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security this year while prohibiting the administration of Barack Obama from granting executive amnesty to 4.5 million illegal immigrants with U.S.-born children.

McConnell did offer that passing the House bill would “be our first choice,” but added “if we’re not able to do that, then we’ll let you know what’s next,” indicating the measure might not garner 60 votes needed to reach cloture and overcome a filibuster.

Have Senate Republicans already given in to Obama’s executive amnesty before a single vote has been held in that chamber?

The statement prompted Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-Idaho) to blast Senate leadership at a January 21 meeting of conservative lawmakers.

“It’s uncanny to me that our leadership… is already sending the message that we’ve already lost this battle,” Labrador said.

Labrador drew distinction from 2014 election campaign promises to what is now taking place on the ground: “Last year the message was, ‘We cannot get our way because we don’t have a Senate [majority].’ Now this year’s message is, ‘We cannot get our way, because we only have 54 votes.’ That’s not leadership. That’s not why the American people voted for us.”

Most recently, on January 22, McConnell told reporters, “It’s an important piece of legislation and we’ll decide in February how to handle it but at the end of the day we’re going to fund the department, obviously.”

In the meantime, this is probably not how now-Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) might have approached a similar issue when he ran the Senate.

In 2010, when it came to passing the Dodd-Frank financial legislation, Reid just kept holding cloture votes to get on to the bill as Senate Republicans attempted to mount a filibuster …

I liked when they could not for the love of God give a straight answer when asked about a Republican alternative to the ACA. Its going to be fun watching the Democrats just sit back and let these frauds self destruct over the next two years.

Smirks January 26, 2015 at 9:58 am

The Republicans kept trying to peddle high risk pools as a “solution” to the health care industry’s woes. The same high risk pools that were around before the ACA. The same high risk pools that were unaffordable and exclusionary, and weren’t even available in every state.

But they really do care!

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 11:36 am

Please. He is an ‘elitist’ with an ego.
Plus Gruber sealed the deal on ACA-just like Obama sealed the NO immigration reform deal with his E/O.

Rocky January 26, 2015 at 11:17 am

Vote for us, and we’ll make sure your healthcare benefits are reduced – a winning slogal if I’ve ever heard one.

Reply
Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 11:34 am

What benefits would be reduced? The benefits have already been reduced under Obamacare with the higher deductibles and premiums.
Expanded Medicaid is a ‘bust’ as physicians are NOT accepting new patients on Medicaid-especially since reimbursement has been cut.
Why do you think all these ‘mini-clinics’ at drug stores are popping up?
Not enough docs so now you see a nurse.
Obamacare destroyed healthcare.

No lifetime caps to lifetime caps. Annual caps put in place. Reduced coverage for mental health. Kids kicked off at 18 instead of 26. Shall I continue or can you grasp that fact. Oh – no more birth control (will go over well with parents who have daughters). No coverage if pre-existing conditions.

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 11:41 am

Ok.Republicans are ok with kids mooching off of mom and dad until 26 and pre-existing conditions and a couple of other things that could stay in place
With Obamacare it does no good to have it if you can’t afford to go to the doctor or can’t find a doctor.
Plus Obama changed the 40 hour work week to 29 hours.

Rocky January 26, 2015 at 12:09 pm

I work 40+ hours a week and have an ACA compliant policy. I have the same doctor – his availability hasn’t changed. Still can’t handle admitting your wrong – eh Flip?

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 12:14 pm

The Affordable Care Act requires large employers to offer health insurance to those who work at least 30 hours a week. The bill would change that threshold to 40 hours a week.

Employers are reducing the hours of workers to get them under the 30-hour threshold, which amounts to trying to finance health insurance for some Americans by cutting hours and wages for other Americans.

Wrong?

Rocky January 26, 2015 at 12:22 pm

Except 99.9% of all employers are not reducing hours – except I guess Wal Mart.

Rocky January 26, 2015 at 12:57 pm

Then you’re going to keep ACA. What – you’re going to repeal ACA so you can replace it with ACA? The American people would see that as a waste of time.

FastEddy23 January 26, 2015 at 12:47 pm

And that’s what you have now with BummerCare. Reduced benefits and increased costs. Duh!

SCBlues January 26, 2015 at 5:48 pm

“And that’s what you have now with BummerCare. Reduced benefits and increased costs. Duh!”
Your posts never pass the sniff test. You and old Pogo would say anything to slander President Obama.
By the way, how is that push-mower that you keep trying to pass off as a “medical device” working these days?

FastEddy23 January 27, 2015 at 11:18 am

I do slander Gruber-ment programs that are expensive and out of touch with the will of the taxpayers … and those in gobbler-ment who lie, cheat and steal from that taxpayers.

I finally got around to mowing the front lawn … that is my exer-cycle, physical phitness enhancement device. Beats your gameboy, fur sure.

FastEddy23 January 26, 2015 at 12:43 pm

You tool: its is not the benefits that need to be “reduced”. It is the costs of the extra taxes to pay for those benefits.

The ACA does reduce benefits to the majority, democrats and republicrats and neo-cons and occupiers alike. The ACA does increase the tax burden on the poor and middle classes.

Has anyone been following the news about assisted suicide becoming the law? That is your ACA death panels Gruberizing the way for BummerCare mandates aimed at …

(I am on my way to get my “free” blood tests and a checkup this AM … which now cost me and my health care insurance provider more than $200, double what I paid two years ago. BUT because I have a non-g’ment / ACA subsidized health care insurance provider, I don’t need an appointment for either the tests or the doctor consultations … They actually called me and asked me to come in.)

54 votes won’t override a veto, let alone end a filibuster, but yet again, the point isn’t to actually pass anything. Romano is just encouraging the same GOP behavior of the last 4 years, put up token bills that aren’t expected to pass under any stretch of the imagination and obstruct everything else.

Flip – you still don’t get it. You’re wasting time trying to cry the numbers are false because you don’t like them. You don’t have average GDP growth Q2 and Q3 combined of 4.7% if you have 10% unemployment. See buddy – back in 2009 – when we did have 10% unemployment – GDP growth was negative. Next thing you’re going to tell us is that GDP growth was actually negative, but there’s a big black helicopter over your house and you can’t provide the details because guys in black suits are sitting in sedans outside your house. Now last week you said it was 92 million, now it’s 6.8 million. Oh, and as I read the assumptions (of which there are many) – it’s still a guess and doesn’t really say why those 7 million aren’t working (BTW – 1 million are college age and another 1 million could be stay at home Mom’s and another 1 million late middle-age wives who now don’t have to work). So unless you can get some real research done on exactly why those 7 million aren’t working – it’s fairly worthless. Assuming though, for the minute, that the students and older Mom’s and stay-at-home Mom’s are counted as having viable reasons not to work – then it’s really only 4 million, and with 300K jobs a month created – most will be happily employed shortly. Nice try though.

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 12:42 pm

92 million is the number of adults unemployed. 6.8 million are the ones they can’t find.

You are dyslexic, aren’t you? GED and still can’t read? :-)

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 1:01 pm

I did.It is a LIBERAL website and why I used it to debunk the fiction you post.

Rocky January 26, 2015 at 1:21 pm

You didn’t debunk anything. YOu have one article that makes broad assumptions about labor participation in a pool of 6.8 million – that isn’t supported by any factual empirical evidence. Now once they go out and talk to a reasonable sample of that 6.8 million to validate their assumptions – their article is about as valuable as TG’s rants. God if you’re a lawyer please post your real name incase I ever need a new attorney for something. I’d hate to walk into your office and accidently hire you.

Rocky January 26, 2015 at 11:14 am

Of course they’re going to cave. The real HLS bill will include $30 billion for increased border enforcement. Then they’ll quickly pass the three bills getting crafted in the House – 1) Expanded border security with no real hard triggers 2) Expanded visa’s for tech workers from India 3) amnesty for the illegals with a pathway to citizenship (because you can’t give them Green Cards but say they rules for their green cards are different – meaning pay your fines and apply for citizenshp after 5 years).

RTW is associated with lower wages and benefits for both union and nonunion workers. In a RTW state, the average worker makes 3.2 percent less than a similar worker in a non-RTW state.
Through weakening unions, RTW hurts the middle class. As union membership has declined in recent decades, the share of overall income received by the middle class is essentially at a 45-year low.
