According to survey publisher Trilby Lundberg, U.S. gas prices are at their lowest level since April 2009 – but wholesale rates are beginning to inch back up. That means those rapidly falling numbers at your local fuel station won’t be declining much further … and could start climbing again very soon.
“The street price crash is either coming to an end or is already at its bottom,” Lundberg told Reuters.
In other words you’d be wise to take revenue projections for gas tax increases (like the one proposed last week by S.C. governor Nikki Haley) with an abundance of skepticism.
This website has consistently opposed gas tax increases – especially in low income states like South Carolina where residents pay a disproportionately high percentage of their earnings on fuel. We believe government (both state and federal) owes it to citizens and taxpayers to prioritize government functions (and specific transportation projects) before reaching into their pockets … again.

I also recall being in a panic and having to visit multiple gas stations in order to fill my tank in latter portion of 2008 when a family member was getting radiation and chemo treatments and I was responsible for their transportation, five days a week.

I even called Jim Deminted’s office to bitch and told the secretary that if the Republicans didn’t do something to bring this under control, it would bite them on the ass in November. It did, and we will be living with the consequences for two more years, also. I am not imaging having rode all over Eastern LexCo to find gas in pumps and buying $10 at a time to fill my tank.

No one predicted the dramatic drop in prices. So we are going to believe them now when they say it is going up. I believe it will continue to drop to $40 a barrel and with have to stay there awhile to drive down shale and tar sands production. If prices do rise again to $100 per barrel, it will be because of a boom in the developing world or a huge international crisis. Even a US recovery will probably raise cleaner natural gas use not oil.
China growth drove up prices. American fracking drove it down. I don’t believe it will rise above $75 for two years. Local gasoline prices will stay below $2.40.
