Paul Thurmond Considering Run Against Mark Sanford

ANOTHER POSSIBLE CHALLENGER EYES VULNERABLE “LUV GOV”

|| By FITSNEWS || The son of South Carolina’s longest-serving U.S. Senator is reportedly eyeing a career of his own in the nation’s capital …

S.C. Senator Paul Thurmond – son of the legendary U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond – is one of several Lowcountry politicos rumored to be considering a run for the Palmetto State’s first congressional district in 2016.

That’s the seat currently held by former S.C. governor Mark Sanford … who won it in a 2013 special election.  Of course Sanford has been one disaster after another lately … prompting speculation that he will face a credible challenger this go-round.

Sanford ran unopposed in 2014, but 6.59 percent of first district voters (8,423 people) wrote-in the name of someone else on their ballots – an abnormally large “protest vote.”

Thurmond is said to have briefly considered mounting a write-in campaign last fall against Sanford – who was fresh off another political implosion at the time.  However he opted against it in favor of keeping his options open for 2016.

A former assistant solicitor and Charleston County (S.C.) councilman, Thurmond ran unsuccessfully for this congressional seat in 2010 – losing in a “Republican” runoff to Tim Scott.  Thurmond won a special election for the S.C. Senate in July 2012 upon the resignation of former lieutenant governor Glenn McConnell – and a general election for McConnell’s old seat that November.

He’s received mixed reviews from constituents since taking office …

The most credible potential challenger to emerge so far?  Former S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) director Catherine Templeton – who stepped down from her post at the head of the state’s largest agency earlier this month (sparking rumors of an impending congressional campaign).

Should she run, Templeton would likely be an even-money bet to defeat the “Luv Gov,” perhaps even a mild favorite to unseat Sanford given his propensity for unforced political errors.

Also said to be eyeing the seat?  Ninth circuit solicitor Scarlett Wilson.

For his part, Sanford appears totally unconcerned about his would-be challengers – even though he alienated a huge portion of his base by voting to reelect liberal U.S. Speaker John Boehner earlier this month.  We ran into him earlier this week at the 2015 S.C. Tea Party Coalition convention and he just shrugged his shoulders when we asked him about his upcoming election.

Sanford CAN”T be defeated in SC1. Period.

Someone would have to run a serious campaign that points out that Sanford is all mouth and never actually accomplished a thing – except SC taxpayer subsidized insurance coverage for beach property owners – any time he has ever been in office.

His opponent needs to get the goods on every junket he has ever been on since 1992;
explain in a way they can understand what he did to get the biggest ethics fines in SC history;
they need to make him explain how a Christianist C Street cult member who identifies with King David can also be such an acolyte of athetist Ayn Rand, he can write love letters to her in Newsweek.

If someone was smart enough to run an educational campaign against Mark Sanford’s record of nothing but insuring he and his family have great taxpayer funded benefits and perks, they could win.

How much SC state retirement does Sanford get as a former governor? What kind of benefits?

All that is public knowledge, and yet . . . South Carolinians keep voting for him.

Same as any other state employee. Average of highest 12 quarters x 0.1875 x number of years served. If he hasn’t served 28 years he has to wait until the age of 65 to collect benefits. And that’s only if he participated in the state retirement system, some employees are not required to participate.

Do you actually know that? Or, are you assuming?
Legislators have their own plan; judges and solicitors have their own plan; law enforcement has its own plan.
Why would a governor be in the sorriest plan of all, that of the majority of state employees?

Sadly, you are correct.

He looks mighty young considering how old his father was. I presume he had sex with much younger women often. I wonder if he knows all of his siblings.

It would be hard to trust his judgement unless he first considers permanent removal of that God awful comb over.

I was going to say he needs to do something with that hair.

None – he was literally the last little swimmer Strom ever generated.

Templeton most credible? Um, not since getting canned from DHEC (that’s what I heard). Furthermore, no one knows who she is. Sanford has this, like it or not, it’s not happening.

Did ole Strom already have dementia when he fathered this guy? He would probably stand a better chance of winning if he changed his name.

For people who hate government and government employees and government jobs, why do Republicans seek a job in government?? Paul is a great guy and I wish him well.

Do you have to be in the system to change it or at least strike a balance? Term limits would be my choice.

Little Cockroach Turd Thurmond needs to stay away from politics. The Thurmond legacy ain’t going to get him any votes and that combined with his wimp looks will guarantee he goes down faster than the Hunley or Glennie McConnell

However, if Cockroach Bitch Scarlett throws her diaphragm in the ring along side of Cockroach Bitch Templeton’s gin bottle then the race will be a classic fracas of ripped panties and shredded bras

He got enough votes to be elected to the state senate.

OK, I yield to the Gentleman from the Upstate

However, a Congressional Race is a cunt hair different than a State Senate Race and unless he is washing his hair in Honeysuckle Douche he doesn’t stand a chance against the two Cockroach Bitches and even less of a chance against Rhett

Whoopty doo… that just means he’s got enough relatives and neighbors in that district to elect him. Does he have enough support in the entire state to get him elected? Fatboy Campbell seemed to think he did and that didn’t go very well for him. These people need to quite trying to live off their sperm donor’s name.

He doesn’t need support from the entire state. This is a congressional election. It will come to you Clem, just think about it some more. But don’t hurt yourself.

Most people in SCs First District have no idea who Templeton even is.

Did you see her photos on the WLTX slide show of the inaugural dinner and dance? She gets yummier looking by the day. I believe that Nikki is jealous of her because of the different tone of the comments between her and Templeton.

Older fathers are more likely to pass on genetic mutations and, if he fathered this man, Strom was fucking ancient at the time.
