SOUTH CAROLINA FOOTBALL PROGRAM LOOKING FOR ANSWERS …
By FITSNEWS || Former Florida Gators head football coach Will Muschamp is headed to Auburn to become the Tigers’ next defensive coordinator – a major coup for a program looking to get back into national championship contention in the most difficult division in college football.
Muschamp’s decision to join head coach Gus Malzahn‘s staff surprised many seeing as the University of South Carolina was believed to have the late edge in luring the 43-year-old Rome, Georgia native.
Guess not … instead he signed a three-year deal with Auburn believed to be in the neighborhood of $1.8 million per year.
So why couldn’t South Carolina land Muschamp?
According to our sources, the “head coach in waiting” designation he wanted from the Gamecocks was never on the table.
How come?
“South Carolina already has a head coach in waiting,” a source close to the Gamecock program told FITS, referring to USC wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Steve Spurrier, Jr. “You can’t offer a man something that isn’t available.”
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Spurrier Jr. is also South Carolina’s recruiting coordinator – which is a tough job to have at the moment. At last count the Gamecocks have lost five commitments from their class of 2015 – including a trio of offensive linemen. Four of those commitments were scheduled to be January enrollees in the program.

Steve Spurrier Jr. Head Coach in Waiting???? This is a joke.
Spurrier Sr. better hire a good DC or he will be gone next year; and if not Ray Tanner will be gone as AD. There are a lot of large donors pissed-off right. Since Tanner has taken over at AD, the baseball and football programs are regressing back to mediocrity.
We are losing top recruits and and have lost the last three Mr. SC Football award winners – two to UGA.
In 10 years at USC, Spurrier Sr. has not recruited ONE 5 star QB and only ONE 4 star – Garcia. This despite having Bennet and Brown at Duke and Johnson, Wuerffel, Mathews and Grossman at UF – all who were ‘world class’ passing QB’s. BTW, Connor Shaw was 3 Star and Dylan 2 star.
This is a classic example of why old coaches need to retire and give the young guys a chance. And by ‘young’, I mean Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech not Steve Spurrier, Jr.
Tanner wins two National Championships and they make him A.D. If Spurcock won a Nat. Champ. they’d make him President of the University.

In the last two years Carolina has been to the NCAA Tourney including the Super Regional. How is the baseball team “regressing” into mediocrity under Coach Tanner and Coach Holbrook?
I heard those stupid kind of comments about Coach Tanner during his CWS drought btwn 2005 and 2010 from baseball ignorant people who, if they had their way during that time, would have gotten rid of Coach Tanner.
If you’re above a half-assed team you can make the Super Regional, it’s kind of like making a bowl game in football.

Tanner should have never been given the AD position. You can’t hold this job and be buddies with everyone and have the reputation as a nice guy. The job requires being a hatchet man and not giving a fuck about anything but the W-L record and the bottom line.

OK, but Muschamp is not the best Defensive Coach available in the first place. He was loser at Florida, and will be so at Auburn. Instead, USC should look to the NFL for their next Defensive Coach. There are many to chose from, just get out the check book and find the best one.
