FABULOUS FOOD FAST …
By TAYLOR BROWN || Writers are told to “write what they know,” or are passionate about, and for me, that’s Rush’s fabulous fast food.
I like to think of myself as Rush’s No. 1 fan – a title I’ve held for over two decades. Heck, there are people in Germany who know about Rush’s thanks to me.
Recently a friend who studied abroad with me came to visit Columbia. She insisted we go to Rush’s because she’d heard my incessant ramblings about their fresh cheeseburgers and french fries, coleslaw, and, oh Lord … the milkshakes. For those of you who cursed to have never, Rush’s milkshakes are the stuff dreams are made of!
Like me they’re all-American, all-natural and all sorts of yummy.
Anyway my friend and I went, and she loved it. Of course.
Watching Rush’s first-timers take that virgin bite of hot hand-formed burger (with cheese, chili, lettuce, pickles, tomato, onions, mustard, ketchup, mayo—the most important ingredient) is like hearing a baby giggle or snuggling up with a sleepy puppy.
It’s bliss.
My bio for this site (below) includes my love affair with this fast food restaurant, which I swear to be better than Whataburger, In-And-Out, or Zesto. I’m not quite sure why I love Rush’s so much, but it’s got a lot to do with the food itself (never frozen, never microwaved) as well as the fact that it reminds me of growing up here in the Midlands (including memories of going after dance, during Spring Valley High’s lunch period, after a bad break-up, or on a date, etc).
I go to Rush’s for the good and the bad times. I go every year for my birthday. It was my first meal on American soil after coming back from studying abroad. It holds a very special place in my heart.
For those of you who have never been to Rush’s: please go!
I recommend the cheeseburger basket (or chili cheeseburger basket) with a chocolate shake. You have my personal guarantee that the food will be phenomenal, the staff will be kind and friendly, the service will be fast, and your taste buds will tingle with delight. Oh, I also recommend putting some of the fries on your burger for an unexpected crunch.
For those of you who consider Rush’s a way of life as I do: I’ll see you at the Two Notch Road location (it’s the best Rush’s location, FYI).
#Rushs4Everyone!!!
Taylor Brown is a 20-something Wofford College graduate who somehow got sucked into politics at an early age. She is easily won over with Rush’s fast food (obviously), wine, and spirited political arguments.

Mmmmm, all natural. Nice!
No pics, no care.
If you get close to the screen like I do…you can almost see them.
The cleavage is a solid 9.
PRO TIP:
Get a bigger monitor.
“Oh, I also recommend putting some of the fries on your burger for an unexpected crunch.”
Well, since you’ve told us, wouldn’t it be a totally expected crunch?
Completely unrelated Rush’s question, why are you making duck face at your wine glass?
I bet you wished they played Nas in Rush’s, don’t you?
I love their chili cheeseburgers, and they’re good for you.What-A-Burger used to be great, but that was before you were born..
The chili cheeseburgers are awesome.
D,…do.. do they have crispy chili cheese fries?
http://rushs.net/menu/
crap! no chili cheese fries!
The chili cheese burgers’re too damn messy! Good, but messy.
I’ll go out of my way to eat at Rushes – I don’t care what 9″ says, their “barbque samiches” are good too.
Eating their Q is a sin.Hite’s was named one of the best in the nation by Esquire magazine,a manly magazine.I didn’t want to bring Q up; I have PTSD episodes when someone mentions bad Q.Lord have mercy on your soul.Amen and amen.
bad Q
Ain’t no such thing, Hoss.
Different styles …some better than others.
Lowcountry’s BBQ is the best. Dukes, Sweatmans, Bessingers, Mama Browns.
Mama browns..too salty.
Kelly’s on hwy 78…good stuff, John Derst bread and all.
Bessingers drowns the pork in sauce.Inedible.That’s all you taste.Great Q should always be served w/sauce on the side, and that’s a fact,Jack. Are you gay?
Esquire is a “manly” magazine???….yeah, maybe in the 1950’s when they wrote stories on African safaris and race drivers like Sterling Moss….now it’s for prissy metrosexuals.
So,you still read it?
I wanna dip my balls in it!
“first-timers take that virgin bite of hot”
That’s lifted right out of a romance novel.
I also love Rush’s. Their chili dogs are my favorite and I am someone who is not usually that fond of hot dogs. I love their sweet tea, some of the best in Columbia. Yes, the milkshakes are good and do not forget to try the strawberry sundae. I am not as fond of their coleslaw. I would rather go to Rush’s than any national fast food chain. Fresh products and friendly staff make this a wonderful eatery.
This article brought to you by Rush’s…”The Taste You Love.”
I’ll make sure to hit up the place sometime. thanks!
Rush’s does have great hamburgers… IMHO, one of the things about burger places in Columbia is that most of the expensive, known-for-burger joints are overrated… though I do like Pawleys FP pretty well. One of my local faves is the legendary blue collar/white collar dive: Macs on Laurel… their Chili Cheeseburger baskets are wonderful… but again, Rush’s is a great place!
My cardiologist’s head just exploded ’cause it may taste good, but it sure ain’t good for you.
It’s okay for fast food, their hamburger has a weird texture to it, almost like McDonalds hamburger. Maybe it’s a real fine ground hamburger, somewhere between hamburger and hotdog texture. Their chicken sandwich is good, right up there with Chick-fil-A.
Thanks for the hard hitting OP ED!

I go to Rush’s every time I’m in Columbia.
