SAME-SEX BENEFITS OFFERED TO GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES …

Before the U.S. Supreme Court definitely settled the question of gay marriage, South Carolina’s bureaucracies are extending benefits to same-sex couples on the basis of several lower court rulings.
According to the S.C. Public Employee Benefit Authority (PEBA), same sex spouses are now eligible for health insurance through the state system.
“By recent decisions of the federal courts, South Carolina’s prohibition upon the recognition of same-sex marriages has been found unconstitutional,” a release from the agency stated. “In light of those rulings, the South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority (PEBA) is holding an enrollment period for subscribers who have valid, out-of-state same sex marriages that predate November 18, 2014, to add insurance coverage for their same-sex spouses and children of their same-sex spouses through December 19.”
Additionally, PEBA states that a subscriber who “enters into a valid, same-sex marriage in South Carolina or another state after November 18, 2014 will have the usual 31 days from the date of marriage in which to add coverage for his or her spouse or stepchild.”
Ka-ching, ka-ching, KA-CHING.
FITS is attempting to get an estimate from the agency regarding just what sort of affirmative obligation this new coverage will impose on South Carolina’s already over-burdened taxpayers … so we’ll let you know what we hear.
In the meantime, it’s worth noting we have no objection to same-sex couples being offered the same government benefits currently being made available to heterosexual couples. In fact failure to offer such benefits would be a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment right to equal protection under the law.
We do, however, hope the price tag accompanying this expansion of liberty encourages state policymakers to rethink not only the size of South Carolina’s government workforce but also the extent of the benefits they receive.
There are certain core functions (cops, prison guards, judges, etc.) government must perform – and those who perform these functions should never encounter discrimination in hiring or firing – or in the salaries they are paid or the benefits they are offered.
But we shouldn’t be paying benefits for non-core functions – whether the individual receiving those benefits is gay or straight.

Of course there’s is always this “free market” in health care that he is always mentioning without explaining how that would change anything in any way.
Health care effectively utilizes extortion to provide profit to both medical workers (doctors, nurses, big pharma). You pay what they want you to because you need it or you might die. Imagine if public service worked the same way:
One of your children is raped by a stranger. You call the police, and one shows up. Wow, serious crime. We’ll take a report. Oh, you want an actual investigation? Hmmm…. the forensic investigation will cost, oh, two thousand dollars. Actual lab work will cost $500 per sample or item. Arrest and housing of the criminal will cost another thousand plus two hundred fifty dollars a day for keeping him in jail. You have insurance? OK, six thousand dollar deductible, then you pay 20% after that. Cops would make 50k per year, with investigators and forensics making 100k+. Can’t afford it? Oh well, guess one got away.
The point is, there are some parts of our society that MUST be regulated (within reason, as society should still not abuse public employees to make a few extra bucks for other select groups of people) to keep society functioning. This article misses the point in trying to turn insurance into a fiscal matter… there is such a thing as equal protection under the law. Start picking and choosing who is protected, and you might find yourself without protection under the law as well. Yes, I do believe that homosexuality is aberrant behavior, but I also recognize that in this case law trumps my beliefs.

People below a certain income aren’t allowed to use Obamacare. A spouse whose primary job is caring for the family’s children and household is probably not going to be able also to earn enough money to make the cut-off. South Carolina, by refusing to do the necessary Medicaid expansion to give these lower income people health insurance, has made it even more necessary for the state to give health insurance to ALL families of public employees.

Try having your “church” marriage recognized anywhere, without a license from the state of your choice and you will find you are not married. You’re bad at how groups and % works. If you have a population of 1000 and 2% are homosexuals. That means that 20 are homosexuals and 980 are heterosexuals.
If of that 1000, 100 of them are pedophiles, and 98% of pedophiles are heterosexual males. Then that means there are 98 heterosexual male pedophiles. This drives up hospital costs, and South Carolina citizens pay through the nose for it. It’s cheaper to provide people with health insurance than to pay ER prices for their every injury and illness. The deductible has gone up by 50% over the past 2 years, and the State Health Plan pays for no preventible care (like flu shots). The “extent of the benefits” state employees receive is already laughable. The bills I get after going to the doctor for what the State Health Plan doesn’t cover get higher and higher, along with what I pay for insurance, so any rethinking they do need not make it worse.

Marriage was always a contractual relationship as much and in some societies more than a religious relationship. For example the Greeks and the Romans, where the one man one wife concept first arose, viewed Marriage as a contractual relationship. A religious ceremony was not even required to create a marriage in ancient Rome.
What people like you need to know is that world history and Christian history are not the same. For most of world history the norm for marriage was Polygamy. Women were sold. Sometimes to people of an entirely different religion to be their wife. To say that marriage is a nothing more than a religious ceremony, shows you know nothing about history. Which is not uncommon in SC.
Holy Matrimony is a religious ceremony uniting two people as one in the eyes of God. It is often called “marriage.”

But court after court has failed to find any compelling state interest in denying this contract to same-sex couples: the couples can legally consent and are also thus provided additional financial stability, which benefits the government.
