By FITSNEWS || There’s a great story up on the website of author J. Mark Powell (a.k.a. the spokesman for S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson) exploring the controversy raging over a new historical marker erected in Atlanta, Georgia.
The controversial new marker pays homage to U.S. army general William Tecumseh Sherman and specifically his “March to the Sea” – six brutal weeks in late 1864 during which more than 60,000 U.S. troops laid waste to broad swaths of Georgia. From November 15 to December 21, 1864, Sherman’s army cut a path of destruction from Atlanta to Savannah – three hundred miles of scorched earth that stretched sixty miles wide.
By this time the War Between the States was effectively over, with Sherman’s march intended to humble the rebellious Southern states as opposed to achieving any military objective against an enemy force.
And humble them he did – doing an estimated $1.5 billion worth of damage (in today’s dollars), most of it to civilian property.
“War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want,” Sherman famously said of his scorched earth tactics.
“We are not only fighting armies, but a hostile people, and must make old and young, rich and poor, feel the hard hand of war, as well as their organized armies,” Sherman added in a letter to fellow U.S. general Henry W. Halleck at the conclusion of his march. “I know that this recent movement of mine through Georgia has had a wonderful effect in this respect. Thousands who had been deceived by their lying papers into the belief that we were being whipped all the time, realized the truth, and have no appetite for a repetition of the same experience.”
Anyway, here’s the new marker’s opening line …
On November 15, 1864, during the Civil War, U.S. forces under William T. Sherman set out from Atlanta on the March to the Sea, a military campaign designed to destroy the Confederacy’s ability to wage war and break the will of its people to resist.
Okay … we’ve got no problem with that sentence. As Powell says, “most historians agree on that.”
“But then the text veers into historical revisionism,” Powell says, referring to the inclusion of an “explosive line.”
Contrary to popular myth, Sherman’s army primarily destroyed only property used for waging war – railroads, train depots, factories, cotton gins, and warehouses.
Um, really?
At this point Powell introduces his readers to some primary source material which expressly contradicts this marker – and confirms the “popular myth.”
“I have in my personal collection a letter by Jonathan Messenger, a young Massachusetts soldier, written from Savannah on January 21, 1865,” Powell writes. “Listen to what he told his family about his experience on the March just a few weeks earlier.”

We left Atlanta on the 16th of Nov. had a very pleasant march, it being such nice weather … We distroid every thing, burnt the houses, Barns, Cotton and corn and killed all the hogs, chickens and turkeys to eat and drove off all the cattle mules and horses so there is not much left. Now we want to go through South Carolina and do a little worse there.
“Popular myth,” huh?
Powell says this line is “especially galling.”
“One dictionary describes myth as ‘an invented story, idea, or concept,'” he writes. “Under this rationale, Southerners at least exaggerated the destruction of private property, and at worst completely fabricated it, just to make Sherman (and through him the North itself) look bad. Casually dismissing widespread wanton destruction of private property with the line ‘contrary to popular myth’ is like blaming the victim of a crime to divert attention from the criminal. And it borders on the same rationale used by people who deny the Holocaust happened.”
This website has stoked controversy in the past by suggesting that Sherman’s Army may not have been entirely responsible for the destruction of Columbia, S.C. in February of 1865, part of the “little worse” in Messenger’s note.
But whoever burned Columbia, there’s no denying the fact that Sherman – in his marches through Georgia and South Carolina – waged “total war” on the people of these states in an effort to destroy not only their will to fight, but also their ability to make a living.
It had nothing to do with winning a war, and everything to do with vengeance – and no amount of government-funded historical revisionism can change that.
Anyway, props to Powell for not only rebuking this attempt to rewrite history – but for sharing evidence in his possession that speaks to the inaccuracy of the would-be “revisionists.”

There is truth to this. Here in Horry, where there were only a few plantations and not nearly as many slaves (not all slaves were on plantations, some were on small farms, etc.) as in neighboring Georgetown County, their was fierce opposition to secession. The county, after all, considered itself to be an “Independent Republic.” But when the war started, a great many men signed up to defend hearth and home. Then a great many of them deserted. lol Not making this up. Some of them would hide in the woods in the daytime, close to home, sneaking in to get a good meal and some tang from their wives at night, then back out into the woods before the break of dawn. A lot of them raided nearby farms for food to feed their families, since they could not take care of all their chores at home — for fear of getting caught. Traitors? Depends on how you look at it. They were still defending hearth and home, and to them that was far more important than anything else.
Heck, they did that to Carthaginians who merely competed with them and were in no way traitors.

That certainly is not the record I have read for his time in the Pee Dee region, with even half-reluctant quotes from the time that the women were treated decently. It was in a well-known serious history of the region though I forget the title. They claimed only one civilian was shot, and that in reprisal for an ambush on a small group of troops by civilians, and after warnings of what such attacks would precipitate. I was quite surprised by the account.
Try reading the journals of women in the path of Sherman’s march. I like to go to original sources, rather than just relying on “serious histories”, because they are only as good as their sources, and many are highly biased one way or the other.

The bridge at Riverbanks Zoo has memorial bricks. Does the brick that reads “W T SHERMAN” still remain there, put there by a grandson/great grandson who is/was a landscaper in Columbia? I found them one day just out of curiosity.

On this day in 1865, General William T. Sherman issued a special field order that provided each African American family 40 acres of land and an army mule to work the land.
In the midst of his “March to the Sea” during the Civil War, General Sherman and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton met with 20 black community leaders of Savannah, Georgia.
Based partly to their input, Gen. Sherman issued Special Field Order #15 on January 16, 1865, setting aside the Sea Islands and a 330-mile inland tract of land along the southern coast of Charleston for the exclusive settlement of Blacks. This land had been confiscated by the Union Army. Each family would receive 40 acres of land and an army mule to work the land, thus “forty acres and a mule,” a phrase incorporated into the English language for compensation to be awarded to freed African American slaves after the Civil War. The order applied to black families who lived near the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
On a national level, this and other land, confiscated and abandoned, became the jurisdiction of the Freedman’s Bureau, which was headed by Gen. Oliver Otis Howard (Howard University). In his words he wanted to “…give the freedmen protection, land and schools as far and as fast as he can.”
Where are they now?

True history from family documents. I’ll have to refresh my memory by pulling out the records for the full story. Anderson, the leader of the group, was killed in Dallas, TX, and the other three were in the Atlanta, GA area (where Dallas’ father was murdered on his front porch). After the last one was killed Dallas moved his family to Sand Mountain outside Ft. Payne.
The traditional American way of war was developed to defeat regular enemies. It reflects many of the strengths of American society and culture. Alas, one military style does not suit all kinds of warfare equally well. The fit between the traditional “American way,” and the requirements of counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism, for example, falls far short of perfect. The pertinent question, therefore, is “Can that traditional way of war adapt so as to be effective against irregular enemies?”
General Westmoreland, then Commander of MACV, once famously and characteristically told a press conference that the correct approach to counterinsurgency was “firepower.” It has long been the American way in warfare to send metal in harm’s way in place of vulnerable flesh.
This admirable expression of the country’s machine-mindedness undoubtedly is the single most characteristic feature of American war-making at the sharp end. Needless to say, perhaps, a devotion to firepower, while defensible, indeed necessary, cannot help encouraging the armed forces to rely on it even when other modes of military behavior would be more suitable. In irregular conflicts in particular, heavy and sometimes seemingly indiscriminate, certainly disproportionate, resort to firepower solutions, readily becomes self-defeating.
A focus on firepower as the key to a victory defined in classic military terms produces the attitude that what we do in war is service targets. Instead of being considered in his cultural context, the enemy is reduced to the dehumanized status of the object of U.S. firepower. At its nadir, this characteristic was demonstrated in action in Vietnam with the prevalence of the U.S. artillery’s very extensive practice of conducting unaimed harassment and interdiction fire. A notable fraction of that artillery fire was expended for no better reason than that the ammunition was available in embarrassing abundance.

If we had won the War for Southern Independence I have no doubt Sherman would have been tried for war crimes.
And if they hadn’t found Bush before he choked to death on that pretzel, we would have had a funnier story to tell than Nixon’s.
Why is there such a need for revisionism in regards to history? I watched a documentary about him that portrayed him as a loser that became a lapdog to Grant after he gave him another chance knowing he had no problem with destroying the South in an attempt to redeem his career. Sherman was repulsed by blacks and held them in lowest regard so he certainly wasn’t a savior. A massive group of Blacks followed his army and Sherman exploited them at every chance, especially in making them build a pathway through the swamps when he headed North. I don’t remember which river, but he had them build rafts for crossing with the implication they would follow last. When the Army was completely across except for an armed detail, they killed any blacks who tried to board on their departure. The accounts said that many blacks died trying to swim after them they were so desperate. Perhaps our resident historian the Colonel, knows of this film or events?

The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth—right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail.”
