AND THE GOVERNMENT DOESN’T LIKE THAT …

By FITSNEWS  ||  Encryption advances in new Apple and Android operating systems have America’s spy state up in arms …

According to Yahoo! Tech, the latest Apple iOS 8 and Android 5.0 Lollipop mobile operating systems automatically deploy new encryption technology – making it impossible for police to access the information on the devices without first obtaining password information.

“Unlike our competitors, Apple cannot bypass your passcode and therefore cannot access this data,” Apple noted. “So it’s not technically feasible for us to respond to government warrants.”

“Full device encryption occurs at first boot, using a unique key that never leaves the device,” Google noted of the security features associated with its new system.

Excellent!

This is exactly the sort of technological advance advocated earlier this year by National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden – who has courageously exposed the disturbing depths of America’s spy state.

“The bottom line … is that encryption does work,” Snowden said in March.

Yet while those of us who love liberty rejoice, those who would seek to deprive us of it are not happy …

“Encryption threatens to lead all of us to a very dark place,” FBI Director James Comey told the liberal Brookings Institute last month. “Justice may be denied because of a locked phone or an encrypted hard drive.”

“It’s the equivalent of a closet that can’t be opened. A safe that can’t be cracked. And my question is, at what cost?” Comey continued, adding that Apple and Google should think twice before responding to “what they perceive is a market demand.”

“The place they are leading us is one we shouldn’t go to without careful thought and debate as a country,” Comey said.

Really?

What about the massive spy network the government erected in secret with billions of our tax dollars?  Without our knowledge or permission?

Seriously … where was the “careful thought and debate as a country” prior to that system being foisted upon us?

Oh right … it was conducted behind closed doors.

Call us crazy (and the spy state’s proponents have done just that), but we believe the risks associated with unlocking these devices far outweighs the risk associated with keeping them encrypted.  Government is effectively insisting upon a “master key” capable of unlocking any mobile device at any time.

We don’t think they should have it … and according to the survey accompanying columnist Rob Pegoraro‘s story, neither do most people.  As of this writing, 82 percent of respondents opposed giving government such unfettered access – compared to only 12 percent who believe they should have it.

“The fondling fathers wanted us to enjoy a modicum of criminality in the comfort of our indoor dungeons.. as long as the screaming didn’t disturb the neighbors.”

The had the audacity to suggest that a victimless crime isn’t a crime. For shame.

Reply
euwe max November 19, 2014 at 11:31 am

Actually, it’s indefensible for a Christian to suggest such a thing. Not that it matters… they were only Christians by the broadest of meanings… some would say meanings don’t come that broad.

The majority of Christians at the time believed that one’s spirit could be a victim of its own thoughts and actions – even without physical harm.

Here’s something to cook your noodle:

If you smoke, you are committing a crime against Christ… your body is his temple.

If you say an unnecessarily unkind word to another person, even in private, that produces grief that would not have otherwise been endured, it is a crime against your own conscience, and against the offended party.

If you look at a woman with lust in your heart, you’re committing the crime of adultery… even if the woman doesn’t know it.

So, if you harm yourself, you’re the victim. If another person “feels harmed” they’re the victim. There’s even a class of spiritual crime that you can commit without even knowing it.

And, as the premise to all good revenge flicks imply: “All motherfuckers must PAY!”

Reply
USS Busybody November 19, 2014 at 11:47 am

Going down that bunny trail a little further, to whom does a victim seek to collect from if he’s victimized himself?

The government should not be prosecuting victimless crimes along with a lot of other things it should not be doing IMO. I say leave it to God to determine what to do in victimless crimes, but everyone wants gov’t to solve everything-so naturally that’s presently an unpopular opinion.

Reply
euwe max November 20, 2014 at 2:21 am

Yeah, well – we both knew at the outset that it’s religious devotion that created the victimless crime in the first place.

When we talk of “freedom,” (I say we, more in hope than certainty) it’s to talk of “secular law,” where harm has a clear definition related to property and person, with remedies physically rendered.. within limits.

A theocracy, on the other hand, which attempts to use law to elicit “good thoughts,” “high moral character,” and “godly behavior” is a fine definition of hell.

Anyone who has posted more than a couple of dozen comments or replies on this site has a profile that can be analyzed. Since this is not a one subject site that would make a poster’s profile more difficult. Add to that I would say that the regulars here have pendulums that swing wide. It would take only a squad to read and accumulate an individual’s posts, but it would then need a battalion to figure out what we’re all about in our thinking.

We’re pretty much a bunch of stupid apes out here pissing in the weeds with the 98%. They’re not trying to analyze our spelling mistakes – they’re using convolution to find a correlation – an anomaly… any kind of anomaly..

They aren’t looking for the drunks with sagging, blood-shot eyes – struggling to match keystrokes to their internal fantasy that someone might give a shit… nope.

They’re looking for outliers – the ones out there beyond the envelope of competition with imaginary jealousy for *more*.

Potential trouble-makers.

I agree with you on the rest of your points. My point was that we don’t have to worry about being tracked – at least not until there are more of ‘them’ than there are of ‘us’. “us” is the noise, the hissing snow of a television without a signal. If someone is going to be trouble for “them” – “they” can see you as clearly as Godzilla on Main Street.

You don’t have to break the law, you don’t have to kill anybody… they don’t have to frame you for some bogus crime.. just let those ones and zeros convict you of crimes against the state, and they’ll work out the details after you’re gone.

Besides, just by coming up out of the water and walking across Manhattan, you’ve already caused billions of dollars in damage. Does the military ever stop and wonder “what must that poor monster be thinking?”

Godzilla is an outlier, and Manhattan is reality – the zeitgeist – the fragile “middle” that must not be allowed to fragment. The source of true power.

The doors opened.

“Many commenters here are more concerned about the government than criminals”

That’s because the gov’t is filled with criminals & has more power than non-gov’t affiliated criminals.

It’s logical to fear the gov’t far more.

Our justice system was supposedly based on protecting the innocent against false accusations over letting a few criminals go free, instead of the other way around.

Gov't deserves fear & loathing November 19, 2014 at 11:01 am

Anecdotal.

History shows that gov’t criminals do far more damage:

“A petty thief is put in jail. A great brigand becomes a ruler of a State.”-Chuang-tzu

“Steal a little and they put you in jail, steal a lot and they make you king”-Bob Dylan

“gang of thieves writ large — the most immoral, grasping and unscrupulous individuals in any society”-Rothbard

In the “City of God,” St. Augustine tells the story of a pirate captured by Alexander the Great. The Emperor angrily demanded of him, “How dare you molest the seas?” To which the pirate replied, “How dare you molest the whole world? Because I do it with a small boat, I am called a pirate and a thief. You, with a great navy, molest the world and are called an emperor.”

Gov't deserves fear & loathing November 19, 2014 at 11:09 am

Somalia has more gov’t in a smaller space than N. Korea, so how are they at the other end of the spectrum?

They both have gov’t atrocity.

A simple acknowledgement of the evil of all gov’t would seem to be self evident, the conclusion of how to “fix” it is a different matter.

Even on the level of SC. If it weren’t a reality, none of us would have a reason to come to FITSnews and Sic Willie would be sweeping T-Rav’s mansion during the day and returninghome to his doublewide at night.

Bible Thumper November 19, 2014 at 11:13 am

Anarchy and weak government is more of a problem in Somalia. A government official is not likely to survive a year in office without being killed.

Gov't deserves loathing & fear November 19, 2014 at 11:16 am

“Anarchy and weak government is more of a problem in Somalia. ”

Welp, we disagree. It’s lot of gov’t tucked into a small space IMO.

Regardless, I think the reality of criminal gov’t being more dangerous that individuals is time honored(as noted by my quotes above spanning thousands of years) and understood by most.

You have your prerogative to disagree, but our gov’t has too much power as it is and to cheer for more seems to fly in the face of history.

Imagine if the reason said houses were built was because the government couldn’t just stick to lawful searches via search warrants and instead consistently broke the 4th Amendment and searched whatever the fuck they wanted, when they wanted, for any reason they wanted, with little to no oversight.

Maybe if government didn’t abuse the rights of the citizenry, and on such a grand scale no less, we wouldn’t revolt in such a fashion.
