HOW 320,354 PEOPLE DECIDED WHO GOVERNS 4.5 MILLION …

By FITSNEWS  ||  Voter turnout in South Carolina officially clocked in at 43.79 percent for the 2014 general election, according to data compiled by the S.C. Election Commission.  That translates into 1,261,611 ballots cast (out of 2,881,052 registered voters).

Is that good?  No … not even a little bit.

In 2010, a total of 1,358,548 people cast ballots in the state’s general election – good for 51.6 percent of registered voters.  In 2006, the total was 1,104,132 – or 45 percent of registered voters.  That’s low, to be sure, but not quite as low as 2014.

Meanwhile in 2002, a total of 1,116,936 people cast ballots – which equated to 54.6 percent of registered voters.  In 1998, there were 1,092,430 ballots cast – or 54 percent of registered voters.

Check the stats if you must … and then ponder how fewer and fewer people are voting (here and nationally).

Then go read our articles on anemic primary election participation (and even more anemic runoff election participation) in the Palmetto State.

Why do primaries matter?

Well, “Republicans” defeated Democrats by double-digit margins in every single statewide race  this year.  In fact S.C. Senator Vincent Sheheen – who lost his rematch to Nikki Haley by a whopping 14.5 percentage points – had the narrowest margin of defeat of any Democrat on the statewide ballot.

Yeah …

Translation? The 320,354 people who showed up for the GOP primary elections this summer chose South Carolina’s leaders … whether the other 4.2 million people in the state liked it or not.

The only funny math is the math in this article.. No the primary voters did Not decide. The general election did and they didn’t want Democrats.

Nice profile pic, Derrick. Maybe all of us will take you a little more “seriously” once you shed that persona.

If by “we,’ you mean “The Castro,” then–yes, I guess

If by “hot,” you mean “what, huh?,” then–your torture of basic logic leaves me baffled.

That said…dudes posting “political-savvy” comments whilst sharing their jack-ass selfies aren’t exactly—persuasive? Just sayin’

… fewer and fewer people are voting

**************************************************************************************************

(From another recent post…)
At issue is whether same sex couples in the Palmetto State should be permitted to marry while the federal court system sorts out the legality of state-level marriage bans like the one approved by South Carolina voters (well, 78 percent of them) in 2006.

Reckon there’s a connection?
Why is it, again, that voting is so important?

If they didn’t vote I could care less whether they like it or not. I voted in both the primary and general elections, they could have voted also.

BTW what were the numbers for the Dem primary?

In some other parts of the world, people risk their lives fighting for the right to vote.

On the contrary, the people who stayed at home did vote. They voted to let the 320K decide the outcome for them, and no matter the outcome, they got what they voted for.

There is a “silent majority” in SC, that’s for sure. Sort of like “been down so long it looks like up to me.” Except for the thousands who the GOP is willing to let starve to death, I guess the rest of us are just hanging on, glad it ain’t worse..yet.

People who don’t vote actually do vote. They vote that they don’t care enough to vote. Therefore their vote doesn’t matter.

There is a TLA (Three Letter Acronym) in the engineering community called WAD (Working As Designed).

The proximate cause of declining voter participation is a combination of pundits promoting the “both sides” meme, Fox News and Voter ID.

I think it’s a good point to keep raising. Participatory democracy is supposed to operate through participants. The Dems deserved what they got. They are almost extinct.
