By FITSNEWS || Voter turnout in South Carolina officially clocked in at 43.79 percent for the 2014 general election, according to data compiled by the S.C. Election Commission. That translates into 1,261,611 ballots cast (out of 2,881,052 registered voters).
Is that good? No … not even a little bit.
In 2010, a total of 1,358,548 people cast ballots in the state’s general election – good for 51.6 percent of registered voters. In 2006, the total was 1,104,132 – or 45 percent of registered voters. That’s low, to be sure, but not quite as low as 2014.
Meanwhile in 2002, a total of 1,116,936 people cast ballots – which equated to 54.6 percent of registered voters. In 1998, there were 1,092,430 ballots cast – or 54 percent of registered voters.
Check the stats if you must … and then ponder how fewer and fewer people are voting (here and nationally).

Why do primaries matter?
Well, “Republicans” defeated Democrats by double-digit margins in every single statewide race this year. In fact S.C. Senator Vincent Sheheen – who lost his rematch to Nikki Haley by a whopping 14.5 percentage points – had the narrowest margin of defeat of any Democrat on the statewide ballot.

Translation? The 320,354 people who showed up for the GOP primary elections this summer chose South Carolina’s leaders … whether the other 4.2 million people in the state liked it or not.

If they didn’t vote I could care less whether they like it or not. I voted in both the primary and general elections, they could have voted also.

In some other parts of the world, people risk their lives fighting for the right to vote.
On the contrary, the people who stayed at home did vote. They voted to let the 320K decide the outcome for them, and no matter the outcome, they got what they voted for.
There is a “silent majority” in SC, that’s for sure. Sort of like “been down so long it looks like up to me.” Except for the thousands who the GOP is willing to let starve to death, I guess the rest of us are just hanging on, glad it ain’t worse..yet.

People who don’t vote actually do vote. They vote that they don’t care enough to vote. Therefore their vote doesn’t matter.
