PALMETTO STATE RESIDENTS UNLIKELY TO SPEND MORE MONEY THIS YEAR
By FITSNEWS || A new poll from Winthrop University suggests South Carolinians won’t be contributing to this year’s expected bump in national retail sales.
According to the data, 56.7 percent of survey respondents said they would be spending “about the same” amount of money on holiday gifts this year. Meanwhile 26.2 percent said they would be spending less compared to only 15.9 percent who said they would be spending more.
Yeah … it’s hard to spend more when you’ve got no money … and no job.
Breaking those numbers down by intensity, 11.6 percent of respondents said their holiday spending would be “significantly lower” – more than twice the 5.7 percent who indicated their spending would be “significantly higher.”
Nationally, retail spending during the months of November and December is projected to climb by 4.1 percent this year … although economic forecasters are already warning of the ill effects of a massive cold front that’s dumped several feet of snow across the Northern United States.
And while there’s been no snow associated with this system in South Carolina, the Palmetto State saw its earliest recorded snowfall two-and-a-half weeks ago.
Winthrop surveyed 852 South Carolina residents using landlines and cell phones between November 9-16. Its poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Why don’t you compare those to the national poll. Also, most people who follow this know that when people say they will “spend about the same” will spend on average 4-6% more. People always want to say they will not, but when it comes time to buy, they always spend more, and not because of inflation.
I disagree. People do not always “spend more” than the previous year. The average household doesn’t keep an updated budget so most people could not tell you what they spent last year. Getting them to admit that is next to impossible.

Wrong–it’s not just “hard.” It is completely irresponsible to spend money that you don’t have–especially when spending on trinkets that will be broken or forgotten a few weeks later.
