“ORDINARY EFFORTS FOR EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN”
By TAYLOR BROWN || As I sat down to a supper at Villa Tronco with about twenty other volunteers (and a baby!), I realized just how much of an impact organizations like Birthright of Columbia, S.C. (and the broader pro-life movement) are making on the world. And more importantly how much they’ve done for women who find themselves struggling for support during a time many American women would kill for—motherhood.
These women are often scared, alone, in need of support (financially, emotionally and in terms of essentials like food and shelter), and more. For some of these desperate women, they may not even know if they’re pregnant and are scared to tell their significant other or friends and family, so they come to us. They sit with us and talk about their circumstances. If they get those two lines, a positive confirmation of pregnancy, it could potentially lead to the mother to end the life of her unborn child.
For many other women, though, they open up their hearts and allow us to step in and aid them in the frustrating, difficult, emotional, and painful journey that leads them (or an adoptive family) to hold this delicate new child—for a split second the newest person in the world—to their chests and cradle this now breathing life.
These mothers realize that they are carrying a baby; they’re a mother; they can make life and bring it into the world! This moment isn’t the culmination of Birthright’s help, though. Birthright is there for the new mother and her child as they both enter into that hard, trying, expensive, and extremely rewarding experience that is raising a child.
Hank Chardos, the new full-time director of Birthright of Columbia, spoke to me about his organization and what it means to be pro-life, and his message was an answer to those who say:
Pro-choice advocates allege that pro-life is not an accurate term. This is precisely the concern that an abortion provider voiced to me just one week ago. He said, ‘As I see it, the so-called pro-life position only applies to one kind of life. After the infant is born, pro-life people tend to disappear from the picture.’
Chardos told me that to be pro-life, you must “provide alternatives.”
“That’s what Birthright does,” he said. “Birthright provides based on the mother’s needs. Without alternatives, what is (the mother) going to do? How does she deal with her pregnancy? Who does she turn to? Who can she rely on?”
As I mentioned earlier, Birthright doesn’t just cut off ties once the baby has entered into the world – eyes all scrunched up and sobbing. Birthright continues to aid these new mothers, getting them “day-to-day.”
“We want to go through the pregnancy with them, and teach them how to care for their children,” Chardos said.
Next January will mark Birthright of Columbia’s 35th anniversary. And Birthright has provided countless women with an alternative to killing her unborn child.
They offer financial help, shelter, clothes, an education (Birthright will pay for the mother and father to complete their GEDs completely free of charge), job opportunities, and a network of people who are there to help.
Perhaps the most striking statement Hank told me?
“Birthright isn’t extraordinary. We don’t do extraordinary things. We simply offer ‘simple-ordinary’ efforts for extraordinary needs and extraordinary women,” he said.
Isn’t that the message of being pro-life? These lives of unborn children have the potential to be extraordinary—they just need to have a chance, which is given by simple acts of kindness, empathy, and support. I’m not anti-woman, and neither is Birthright, we’re simply pro-chance. As Henry Hyde said, “This is a debate about our understanding of human dignity, what it means to be a member of the human family, even though tiny, powerless and unwanted.”

Let’s encourage everyone to be clear with our language. One does not abort a baby. One aborts a shuttle launch. One aborts a mission to Mars. One kills a baby. This helps people see the real differences between the people running our government.

If this language of “baby killing” is offensive to you, imagine how offensive the actual act of killing a baby is. And then realize that we have all been conditioned to accept this doublespeak in order to be tricked into accepting what we would not normally accept.
Since Democrats lack the judgment to see that baby killing is wrong, why would we assume that their judgment on other issues would be any better? .
Let’s encourage everyone to be clear with our language. One does not abort a baby. One aborts a fetus, which is not a “baby” any more than an acorn is a “tree” or an egg is a “chicken.”

But in the first trimester the ZEF (when most abortions happen) looks nothing at all like an actual baby. The late term abortions are usually done for the health of the woman or a fetal defect and I do not care what the ZEF looks like then because I place the life of the actual over the life of the potential.

Well the pregnant woman who is not yet a mother-assuming she does not have any kids- is going to give birth to a baby. So at some point she will have a baby. She is not going to give birth to a fetus.
If that is the case, then when does her “fetus” become a baby? Is it when the *mother* (and yes, she is a mother by carrying a child in her womb) declares her unborn child to be one? Is it when the baby is born and takes it’s first breath? “A person’s a person no matter how small.”

The ZEF is alive in the womb but it has no right to life. That comes when it is born. A woman is not an inferior incubator and forcing her into gestational slavery is disgusting.

That moment where someone thinks they just got handed a “GOTCHA!” but didn’t. Referring to the ZEF as something that is alive isn’t much different than calling the bacteria in your intestines “alive.” What matters is what that living thing is classified as.
You’re talking about a life form that cannot sustain itself. Without the environment it is in and being able to pull nutrients from the body of the mother, it cannot survive. Once born, a baby holds no reliance on the mother’s body and can receive nutrients from other sources.
The difference between the ZEF and the baby is autonomy. Independence from the mother’s womb is what makes a baby a baby. Autonomy gives the right to life.
Something similar applies to a child once they turn 18. Before 18 they are considered children, not fully autonomous, therefore they can be denied certain rights or told to do some things they may not want to do. Once they turn 18, they gain that autonomy, which means they have access to various rights, and that their parents/guardians no longer have authority to exert control over them.
Babies have been born premature at just days over 21 weeks in the mother’s womb and have survived.. And have been healthy! This is in spite of the fact that many states allow mothers to seek life-ending procedures long after the 21st week. Moreover, comparing an unborn human child to bacteria is frankly deplorable.
And, on a different subject, does one have to be a mother (or religious) in order to see that life is life and should be respected? I think not. To be pro-life is to accept the logic that there’s human life in the womb and to “abort” it is to murder another human.

He got a lot of scutiny in these parts because he bragged in his comments to Sun News story threads that he could program a voting machine anywhere in the country from his laptop at his office in Murrells Inlet. Sources tell me the FBI took a keen interest in that with one interviewee, who they questioned for over an hour about Davis alone. Whether or not he himself was every questioned by him relative to voting irregularities in Horry County that may have been related to “Chambergate” (“Coastal Kickback”) I have no idea. He may have been, and may have implicated others in wrong-doing to get his ass off the hook.

Republicans for Choice likes McCain: When McCain funds abortions, ‘pro-choice’ Republicans take heart. CNS News reported on February 6, 2008: “The Republicans for Choice Political Action Committee has endorsed John McCain (R-Ariz.), saying he is the best candidate now that former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani is out of the presidential race. … Republicans for Choice founder and Chairwoman Ann E.W. Stone told Cybercast News Service that McCain’s pro-life position wasn’t an issue… ‘He’s shown his willingness to reach across the party.'”
McCain funds 300,000 abortions: Said noted pro-life researcher Darrell Birkey, “John McCain is the Republican candidate who funds the surgical abortion of 300,000 children. In one example out of decades of his funding abortionists, he voted to allocate monies on Oct. 27, 2005 for tax-funded abortion if the baby is unwanted because his father is a criminal, that is, a rapist.” The official Senate.gov site documents the McCain Yea vote on the Health and Human Services Appropriations Public Law 109-149 and the Government Printing Office documents that McCain’s vote authorized funding for surgical abortion to kill an unborn child whose father is a criminal as the law states, SEC. 507. (a) “funds are appropriated in this Act” that includes coverage of abortion, SEC. 508. McCain and Palin refuse to enforce 14th Amendment: By promoting the immoral claim that killing unborn children is a states’ rights issue, both Republican candidates would require the federal government to violate the U.S. Constitution and tolerate child killing, rejecting the 14th Amendment: “…nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” The U.S. Constitution does not define groups of human beings as people, yet Jews, Blacks, and unborn children are all people and ‘conservatives’ like Palin and McCain should understand and promote this simple truth. In addition to God’s enduring command, “Do not murder,” even the Constitution requires states to uphold equal protection to all persons. So McCain and Palin are guilty of willful violation of God’s law and man’s law in the most egregious matter, permitting the intentional killing of innocent children.
Does McCain really even oppose Roe? A campaign staffer recently misrepresented John McCain’s comment to the San Francisco Chronicle in 1999 that, “I’d love to see a point where [Roe v. Wade] is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations.” According to anti-Christian journalist Matt Welch, “Explained McCain campaign staffer and social conservative Patrick Hynes on his personal blog in December 2006: ‘Okay, so what of that quote from 1999? The one about not supporting repeal [of] Roe v. Wade? It was a mistake, plain and simple. And it was immediately clarified.’ … In fact, the comment wasn’t ‘immediately clarified’ at all. Several days later, when the Washington Post asked the campaign whether McCain had misspoken, they said no. But a few days before the Post story ran, McCain said on CNN… that he rejected a ‘litmus’ test for Supreme Court nominees… Meanwhile, however, McCain was actively seeking to rewrite the national Republican platform… McCain said in his famous Virginia Beach speech in February 2000 [that politicians should not be] pandering to… the agents of intolerance [such as] Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell… McCain gives the voting public what it wants… a man onto whom people are forever projecting their own ideological fantasies.”
Cindy McCain said in September that her husband John SUPPORTS Roe v. Wade. Pro-choice Republicans like the McCains have been trained to say they are pro-life while even supporting abortion rights. Consider this CBS News transcript:
Cindy McCain: I’m pro-life. I’m on the record as being pro-life, like my husband…
Katie Couric: And do you believe Roe v. Wade should be overturned?
McCain: No. no.
Couric: No. Why not? Your husband does.
McCain: No. I don’t think he does.
Couric: He believes it should be overturned. That’s what he told me, and that it should go to the states.
McCain: Well, in that respect. Yes, yeah, I do. I understand what you’re saying now. It’s a states issue.
Couric: So, you believe it should be overturned or shouldn’t be overturned.
McCain: I believe it’s a states issue. That I do believe.
[This intense evil and political cover for pro-choice Republicans was pioneered by Christian libertarians including Ron Paul who, like John McCain, is pro-choice state-by-state, as though killing a fetus were a zoning issue. States prosecute, but have no authority to legalize, murder.]
Couric: After the interview we contacted the McCain campaign to clarify Cindy McCain’s position on abortion. They told us that, like Laura Bush, Mrs. McCain does not advocate overturning Roe v. Wade, which guarantees the legal right to an abortion.
‘Pro-life’ means nothing today: in McCain’s Republican circles, ‘pro-lifers’ actually support Roe v. Wade. They support killing unborn children and they lie to Christians to get money and votes to gain power. So Cindy McCain didn’t get the memo and wasn’t aware of the campaign rhetoric that her husband now wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.
But Doesn’t Nat’l Right To Life say McCain opposes funding? Yes, NRTL says McCain “Voted consistently against federal funding of abortion.” They arrive at this by ignoring his votes that fund surgical abortion, chemical abortion, that kill the tiniest children for research, and that give hundreds of millions to Planned Parenthood. A National RTL 100% rating is a near-certain indicator that a Republican is pro-choice with exceptions. See Vision Forum reminding Christians of National RTL’s revealing report of a few years ago titled, “John McCain Threatens the Pro-Life Cause.”
McCain is not even a defender of marriage: Of all things! In the Senate recently John McCain voted against a constitutional amendment to protect marriage as between one man and one woman. He won’t protect marriage, won’t protect the unborn, and in a McCain administration, he’d allow every state to abort children indiscriminately. Republicans and Democrats together are destroying America while many Christians ignore that out of lust for the rush of political competition. As long as Christians are willing to support unrepentant, anti-marriage, killers of unborn children, America will continue our moral freefall. So American Right To Life Action reminds believers: when good people support those who kill unborn children, the abortionist cannot lose.
McCain promises pro-choice judges: Christians have been told to vote for McCain because of the judges he will nominate. But again on Oct. 15, 2008 in the third presidential debate McCain said he has no “litmus test” meaning he is willing to nominate pro-choice judges. And worse, he misleads people by referring to pro-choice judges as though they were pro-life. The un-cashed $10,000 check to Nat’l Right To Life indicates that there are NO JUSTICES on the Supreme Court who have ever held that the unborn child has a right to life. Not one. Yet John McCain promises to nominate more of the same. Consider this widely circulated press release that appeared online including atYahoo! News, the Denver Post, Covenant News and USA Today:

Sometimes the voters and politicians have difficult choices. You could write (or copy /paste) the same type article/comment -and many did – about Lincoln’s support for slavery. Yet his presidency brought US slavery to an end.
Birthright is an outstanding organization – there are many similar organizations state wide. For those of you who are pro-life, put your money where your mouth (or keyboard) is and find one to support. Taylor’s diction is just fine. Her writing, in general, is excellent. A near-total lack of logic and discernment, along with an overweening sense of moral and intellectual superiority to all who disagree with her — that’s the problematic part of that way that lovely young woman presents herself on FITS.

We used to try and ‘rescue’ women and their babies outside an abortion mill in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Our group similar to what the Colonel and Taylor advocate for. We offered alternatives to the destruction of the child.
The evil I observed outside this clinic was forever ingrained in my heart. We would watch the women go into the clinic-and then shortly one of the nurse’s would come to the front door holding up a finger for the number of children they has murdered that day, with a smile on her face.

Back in the day when I served on the Board of Directors of our local Planned Parenthood Affiliate, we would get monthly statistics on the number of referrals made.
This affiliate did not perform abortions, but did make referrals to other affiliates and independent clinics that did provide such services. Referrals were also made to Birthright and the local Florence Crittenden home for unwed mothers [to be].
In almost every month the number of referrals to Birthright and Florence Crittenden outnumbered the referrals to abortion providers. Birthright never referred one of their clients to Planned Parenthood for contraception counseling, nor did they offer any such service themselves other than abstinence and the “rhythm method.”
