GOP PUMMELS DEMOCRATS ACROSS THE COUNTRY … BUT TO WHAT END?

By FITSNEWS || Riding a wave of dissatisfaction with the policies of increasingly unpopular U.S. president Barack Obama, “Republicans” retook control of the U.S. Senate for the first time in eight years on Tuesday night.  The convincing GOP win gives the party total control of Congress … for whatever that’s worth.

The GOP won its new majority by knocking off incumbent Democrats in Arkansas (Mark Pryor), Colorado (Mark Udall) and North Carolina (Kay Hagan) – and picking up open seats that previously belonged to Democrats in Iowa, Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia.

That gave them an initial net gain of seven seats … one more than they needed to retake the Senate for the first time since 2006.

The margin could grow bigger.

In addition to the election night losses, Democrats will likely give up another seat in December when Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana faces “Republican” Bill Cassidy in a runoff election.

The victories will install U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky as the new majority leader of the chamber – a remarkable turn of fortune seeing as just a few weeks ago McConnell was in danger of losing his seat to Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes.  He wound up beating Grimes by 14 points – dramatically exceeding the most optimistic public opinion polling in the Bluegrass State.

In fact Republicans across the country dramatically exceeded expectations … winning the races they were supposed to win by bigger-than-expected margins and doing far better than expected in several races they weren’t expected to win.  In New Hampshire, for example, former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown nearly knocked off incumbent Democrat Jeanne Shaheen – while in Virginia incumbent Democrat Mark Warner was locked in an incredibly tight race with “Republican” Ed Gillespie.

Now … does “GOP control” of the Senate matter?

Not really … America’s economy remains fundamentally unsound, its foreign policy remains dangerously reckless and its government remains hopelessly bloated and corrupt.  Not to mention $18 trillion in debt.

I thought he was toast last time. He has a giant war chest but not being speaker will prevent him from passing it as much – he should be very vulnerable, in fact, you might see him step down instead of running in 2016 muttering something about family and grand children…

My first order of business would be the border, followed by the budget, followed by Keystone. Then I’d defund the ACA.

“My first order of business would be the border, followed by the budget, followed by Keystone. Then I’d defund the ACA.”

I think you’re about to be severely disappointed. Let’s bookmark these suggestions and check back in two years and see if anyone of them are close to happening.

I did notice though that you didn’t call for a balanced budget, so I suppose you are at least realistic on that one.

The ACA will never be defunded, just “tweaked”. The border will remain porous and I wouldn’t under estimate Buffet’s ability to keep the Keystone project from ever taking off even with a R congress.

You should hate Bush too, it’s one of the primary factors that drove voters to Democrats in 2008. If it wasn’t for his epic fuck ups the Dems might not have gotten such a stranglehold over the Senate and ACA might not have ever happened.

Thanks, Bush!

Correct, not, not, correct.

Keystone is a go, fur sure. (Markets up nicely tomorrow).

The border will be the tough one = to many oxen still to be gored, to many “life guards” in the water.

I’m holding out hope the house budget-tears can kill the IRS and get a flat tax in next year … depends on the hearings before January.

Reply
Smirks November 5, 2014 at 9:27 am

replacing Boehner, followed by the border, followed by the budget, followed by Keystone. Then I’d defund the ACA.

Replacing Boehner? Won’t happen. No one wants to take the shit he takes, so they’ll let him keep his figurehead position.

Borders and budget won’t fucking happen. Anyone remember 2000-2006?

Keystone might happen, it’s one thing I expect Obama to fold on. A shame, because (1) Keystone XL won’t help average Americans and (2) once it inevitably spills it could ruin drinking water for thousands and thousands. But hey, Big Oil profits were always the #1 priority here, so it’s all good, right?

Defund the ACA? Won’t happen.

Oddly, 10 million jobs in 6 years and 5.8% unemployment a recession does not make. Just because a wave of Fox watchers went running to the polls saying the economy is an issue – doesn’t mean it is. Go to a Mall and find a parking space close to the entrance. Gas prices are now below $3. Property values are coming back up. The Dow is heading to 14K. So I don’t see where I am a liar. But whaterver.

Reply
diamond jim November 5, 2014 at 10:14 am

The American people know the only jobs being created are part-time service industry jobs, REAL unemployment is 12%, people go to the mall but don’t buy anything (they will spend money at Christmas as they have been saving all year and not spending), if you want to talk gas prices they averaged $1,88 a gallon when Obama was elected, property values are flat or still down in most of the country and the Dow? People are borrowing from their 401-k to eat, pay the outrageous Obama healthcare deductibles and pay off their kids student loans-middle America is losing money in their portfolio’s.

Obama is a muslim with a marxist world-view.He hates America and surrounds himself with those that believe the same. The people in this country are mad as hell and ain’t gonna take it anymore.

Congrats to the GOP. The Dems needed a good spanking. Having a more conservative Congress is not the end of the world. Maybe this was what the doctor ordered so that movement could begin to happen and legislation could be pounded out. The Prez could have done more. He could have been in favor of the pipeline. He could have reduced the capital gains taxes to 5% on American businesses and people who, for example, buy and sell homes and stocks, and allow businesses and their owners to keep more of their own money. The Dems needs to pay more attention to the white middle class and its needs and aspirations instead of thugs and criminals and people gaming the system. Every time you turn on the TV it’s another black male breaking the law on the news.
The Dems need to get more fiscally conscientious and the GOP needs more compassion.

Why The GOP Should Be Happy –
It’s not that “conservative” values won the day. It’s that the moderate Establishment finally kicked the Tea Party to the side. And where they did – they did well. Consider this – an openly gay GOP candidate came within a few thousand votes of unseating a popular Dem SEnator in VA (and in fact – he may still win). An openly known gay Senator was re-elected in SC. A moderate Senator from Kansas (who doesn’t even live there) defeated Tea Party challangers and then an independent. The message of this election is that where GOP candidates were moderate and – this is big – modern, they did surprisingly well. If the GOP can shake off the Don’t Tread On Me crowd, pass immigration reform and get something done with Obama in the next 18 months, they could actually increase the size of their tent. So long as they keep tracking to the center.
