People in the crowd laugh and start yelling nonsense about “Tell the trufus, Rufus!” Now is when the story goes South. Sheheen laugh it off, chuckles it up with the crowd, and even jokes about telling the truth. Dumbass behavior, that.
A smart candidate (whether he thought the governor should be called a “whore” or not) catches the slip, fixes it, and when the yuk-yuk starts says, “Whoa whoa whoa everybody- I am sorry about that horrible slip of the tongue! I think you all know me well enough to know that I would never call a woman that, and we certainly won’t be joking around about it here, right?! Despite our political differences, we would never have to sink to that kind of terrible name-calling, right?”
It may still have caught some attention, but would have likely died in one news cycle. Instead, Vinnie swings for the fence and basically says we’re all stupid and that’s not what he said. Result? When someone stoops to name calling me, I just respond with: “I have been called worse by better people.” It usually gets the message across.
Sheheen had an opportunity to correct what he had stated, but instead played to the audience. No apology will change how he pandered to the crowd.
Regarding Tom Ervin; he did not have the courage to face Haley in the primary, and he
does not have the courage to face her in the general election.
Ervin’s candidacy did not siphon off the votes from Haley as their strategy had hoped, instead Sheheen was losing votes.
After Sheheen shot himself in the foot, then the strategy of Ervin dropping out and endorsing Sheheen was implemented.
Ervin is now showing his “true colors,” and demonstrating his Democratic Party allegiance.
