2014 Governor’s Race: Tom Ervin Drops Out, Endorses Vincent Sheheen

“INDEPENDENT REPUBLICAN” REFERS TO INCUMBENT NIKKI HALEY AS “A DICTATOR AND A TYRANT”

By FITSNEWS || Self-styled “independent Republican” gubernatorial nominee Tom Ervin has suspended his 2014 campaign for the highest office in South Carolina – and chosen to endorse Democrat Vincent Sheheen over “Republican” Nikki Haley.

“My campaign for governor was based on two core principles – one that we deserve a governor we can trust, and two that the challenges facing South Carolina are bigger than political parties and partisan politics,” Ervin said.

The surprise announcement comes one week before voters go to the polls in a race Haley has all but sewn up.

According to Ervin, Sheheen “has what it takes to be an honest governor – he has what it takes to move our state in an honest direction.”

Ervin added Sheheen could “restore honor and integrity to the governor’s office” and fix the myriad of problems within Haley’s cabinet – including the ongoing scandals at the S.C. Department of Social Services (most of which broke exclusively on this website).

In endorsing Sheheen, Ervin invoked an editorial written by Cindi Ross Scoppe of The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper which slammed Haley as a dishonest “tyrant.”

“It comes down to Governor Haley’s inability to tell the truth to the people of our state,” Ervin said.  “She’s chosen to act like a dictator and a tyrant rather than a leader.”

Polls have consistently shown Ervin’s candidacy eating into Sheheen’s support – not Haley’s.  So his decision to drop out and endorse Sheheen will naturally have some effect on the race.  Will it be enough to push Sheheen over the top?

We’ll have to see …

This website endorsed Libertarian Steve French for governor this week – although we had kind words for Ervin’s candidacy.

“We don’t agree with him on everything but the truth is he’s probably run the most substantive race of any of the four candidates … in fact he’s run the campaign Sheheen probably should have run, but didn’t,” we wrote in our endorsement of French. “Ervin has adopted aggressive pro-free market positions on taxes (eliminating the individual levy on income) and education (broadly expanding parental choice), while also embracing populist issues like term limits as well as progressive standards like increasing the minimum wage.”

Obviously we didn’t agree with Ervin on the minimum wage issue – and we were skeptical of his stance on spending issues.

However, we concluded there was more “treat” than “trick” to Ervin’s candidacy.

Campaign finance reports released last week showed Erwin took out $3.4 million in loans to finance his candidacy.  He had $1.2 million in the bank for the home stretch of the race.

“My campaign for governor was based on two core principles – one that we deserve a governor we can trust…”

How can a candidate who bails out to the other party without taking it to a win or lose ending be trusted? Many of you folks sounded the warning and have called this one correctly.

I called it wrong. I really felt like Ervin’s shenanigans with running later, rather than during the primary, was to throw the election for Haley’s benefit. Whatever, I hope she doesn’t go back in, or at least if she does, she is keeping Jimmy Metts company while he is under indictment, shortly thereafter.

Yep! October 28, 2014 at 3:08 pm

Probably.

It’s not enough to matter either way.

Reply
Sandi Morals October 28, 2014 at 3:12 pm

Would make sense. His wife Kathryn Williams was a major contributor to the SCDP in 2010 and donated to Sheheen against Haley last time.

Despite what Fits says ERvin ran a horrible campaign and lost ANY chance of taking votes from Haley when the first damn policy position he took was in support of gay marriage.

Poster October 28, 2014 at 4:13 pm

If this was the plan all along, it was the dumbest idea in the world. If Ervin wanted to get Sheheen elected, he could have pumped 1/2 the money he did in a PAC or to the DGA or the SCDP and could have swayed the election by going after Haley.

When Haley wins, Sheheen has to be thinking, Damnit Tom what a waste of money.

Yeah. We know Obamacare has been a disaster, (I don’t know how, seeing as how SC didn’t accept it). And Republicans who are in states that accepted it have to tapdance around their opposition since their constituents like it. (i.e Pence, McConnell). The economy is spiraling out of control at 16988(+170) as of today. Unemployment is at 5.9 and decreasing. Despite this, SC unemployment rates have increased over the last 3 months. Serious question, how is this possible when Haley announces 1000 jobs everyday? Look man, even people like myself have buyer’s remorse when it comes to the President, but jeez in comparison to Haley??? I know, I know, Benghazi, Isis, Ebola…

Reply
Grrr_Native October 29, 2014 at 12:00 pm

So SC doesn’t participate in obamacare? Do tell.
We have obamacare exchanges in SC (run by the feds) and I’m actually on that exchange for my ins. You realize there isn’t any way to not “accept” obamacare, right? All SC could do is not set up their own exchange…
I suppose you must mean the unsustainable Medicaid expansion that they want, which is just a part of obamacare.

What does Fits do today? Instead of going after Ervin for accepting campaign donations and then spending the voters money to apparently put his wife and her law firm front and center in this campaign and then quitting on them… Fits creates another faux scandel about Haley.

Why isn’t Fits asking about email and communications from the Ervin campaign about how this scam on the voters of SC unfolded? When it was created? Is Ervin going to refund campaign donations? What is the arrangement between Ervin and Sheheen and even Kathryn Williams, IF any? We already know she donated $45oo to Sheheen in 2010 (the state news).

SC Political Digest October 29, 2014 at 8:08 am

He does not mind being a BIG loser, as long as they pay him off. That’s the problem w/ “consultants.” They have no core values or honor. And it’s why so much of what FITS posts is not credible.

But for anklynwhat WL LD it have cost him to stay in 50 cents more? Probably cost more for the press release to drop out than to stay in. This is perhaps more quixotic to me than his entry into the race?

He apparently still had $1.2 million on hand.
Supposedly he and the old lady “prayed” about this last night and he dropped out.Horseshit .He had borrowed a lot of money from the bank according to the state news.
Will be interesting to see what Vinny promised him. MOney or a job?

Mike at the Beach October 28, 2014 at 10:53 pm

Whatever the promise was, at least Sheheen won’t have to worry about following through on it…

Mike at the Beach October 28, 2014 at 10:29 pm

Hubris, man. Hubris. To see that big 3% clocked up on election night in black and white after all the smack talk and money wasted represented an ass-whipping he just couldn’t take. No way to be sure, of course, but that’s my guess.

Rumor was there.Polling I have seen in two way race last week before Sheheen declared a war on women was Haley at 52% and Sheheen at 41%.

I would say Haley will end up with 55% and Sheheen at 42%. Ervin and French split the rest.

THis does explain the “weird” endorsement by Fits for French last night. Fits apparently was privy to this decision by Ervin and played the libs on here as fools! LMAO!!!!

Mike at the Beach October 28, 2014 at 3:08 pm

I guess the embarrassment of dropping out at the last minute after a sham party-switch (of sorts) seems more palatable to Ervin than the ass-whipping he was going to take Tuesday.

Hah! I “endorsed.” Lord, you like to give me power, don’t you? My endorsement and 3 bucks or so will get you a double mocha latte at Starbucks. TRUTH: I said I’d vote for Ervin at one point. Kept betting those damned robo-calls from him. Got annoyed. Started looking more closely at French. Liked a lot of his positions. Will be voting for French. THEN when he loses you can say I backed another loser. Will that make you happy, pogo?

French drops out, urges supporters to vote for Sheheen.

Sheheen drops out, urges supporters to vote for Reeves.

Reeves wins by a landslide. South Carolina’s economy makes a miraculous recovery through legalized weed/hemp farming and trade.

Haley’s been polling at about 50% the last couple of cycles. This probably just makes it close, unless Tom’s words encourage a larger number of voters to sit out. Then again, a lot of his followers may sit-out rather than vote for Vinny. If it was closer – maybe this would make a difference. We’ll see though – there’ could be a starting ripple of upstate GOP to sit this out and let Haley lose.

Ervin has gathered almost $4 million in his campaign — about the same as Haley did in her 2010 bid for governor and $500,000 more than what Sheheen raised during the current campaign.

But Ervin has self-financed the bulk of his campaign.

The former state judge has borrowed $2.2 million from himself and $1.6 million from Arthur State Bank, according to data filed with the state Ethics Commission. Ervin raised just under $100,000 from outside contributors. He had $1.2 million on hand as of last week, according to state records.

Ervin, a Greenville attorney and radio station owner, was a Democrat when he served in the S.C. House in the 1980s but switched parties to run for a House seat in 2005.

Williams, his wife and an attorney in Greenville, has donated to both parties in recent years — including $4,500 to Sheheen’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign and $50,000 to the S.C. Democratic Party that same year, according to state records.

Who believes Sheheen is paying off Ervin’s campaign debt/loans for his dropping out, endorsing him and promising Ervin a job if elected?

But seriously, I was going to “burn my vote” for Ervin. Now I’m back to Sheheen just to get Haley out.

They will be tallied and reported as will any cast next week on the actual ballots. At the rate this election is going I think I’m going to write in Carroll Campbell for Governor and Strom Thurmond for Senate. They’ve both been planted for awhile but they are better than the current crop for sure.

This “voting for dead guys” thing might be kind of cool. They would have to pass a law making signatures via Ouija Board a legal way to sign bills and other things, though.

Tom Ervin did not have the courage to face Gov. Haley in the primary, and now he does not have the courage to face her in a general election.

Thinking Ervin would siphon votes from Haley, the Democrats supported his candidacy. Once the polls indicated he was siphoning votes from Sheheen, a different strategy ensued.

After Sheheen shot himself in the foot, then the Democrat Ervin demonstrates his true colors and allegiance.
