GAMECOCKS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO MISSOURI
By FITSNews || The University of South Carolina football team’s much-maligned defense showed up to play for the first time in 2014 … but embattled coordinator Lorenzo Ward‘s troops got no help from head coach Steve Spurrier‘s high-flying offense.
Leading unranked Missouri 20-7 with seven-and-a-half minutes to go in the game, the No. 13 Gamecocks (3-2, 2-2 SEC) simply couldn’t grind out a critical victory – while a Tigers’ offense that had been held in check all night came alive on its final two drives.
Forced to punt on ten straight possessions – during which time its offense accumulated only 60 yards – Missouri exploded for 109 yards on its final two possessions, both of which ended in touchdowns.
The final blow came on a fourth down play from less than a yard away, with junior tailback Russell Hansbrough powering forward across the goal line after being initially stopped short by the Gamecocks’ front line. With kicker Andrew Baggett‘s extra point splitting the uprights, the upset was on.
Moments earlier, it seemed as thought South Carolina had clinched a hard-fought defensive struggle over Missouri when Pharoh Cooper hauled in a 23-yard highlight reel touchdown reception from quarterback Dylan Thompson – putting the Gamecocks ahead by thirteen points.
Cooper not only made a leaping grab to snare Thompson’s pass, he somehow managed to hold onto the football after being drilled by a pair of Missouri defenders.
It was all for naught, though. After giving away a miracle to the Gamecocks in Columbia, Missouri last year … the Tigers took it back this year in Columbia, S.C.
Just three plays and thirty-six seconds after Cooper’s dramatic touchdown reception, Missouri (4-1, 1-0 SEC) struck pay dirt – scoring for the first time since its opening possession.
In fact in three rapid fire plays, Missouri amassed more yardage than it had gained on its previous ten drives combined .
And after South Carolina’s offense sputtered for the tenth time in the game, the stage was set for Hansbrough’s heroics.
The Gamecock offense – held to a season-low 338 yards against the Tigers – couldn’t put anything together in the last minute-and-a-half, with Thompson throwing four consecutive incompletions to four different receivers.
The fifth-year senior from Boiling Springs finished the game completing 21 of 37 passes for 219 yards with one touchdown – slipping to 6-2 as South Carolina’s starting quarterback.
On the opposite sideline Missouri’s Maty Mauk completed an anemic 12 of 24 passes for 132 yards – although he came through in the clutch on his team’s penultimate scoring drive, completing a pair of passes for 87 yards.
South Carolina travels to Kentucky (3-1, 1-1 SEC) next week, while Missouri has a week off before hosting twelfth-ranked Georgia (3-1, 1-1 SEC).

Gotta play the game for 60 minutes.
Not likely to be their last loss in conference play, either.
I do believe the streak over Clemson will stop at 5.
Overrated like USC’s law school, business school and engineering school.
The chicken have come home to roost…spurrier, tanner and Pastides – Old, fat and stupid – welcome to the new world in college football and higher education. You are now ranked where you should have been ranked all along – both in football and academics. LMAO
No association with USC for me, but you could not be more wrong regarding academic rankings. The only ones you hear about are the ones Clemson is able to manipulate (U.S. News). Similarly, the only time Clemson fans babble about a “new world in college football” is after defeating a team that gave up 800 yards against East Carolina.
Wanna try a talked up category ?
Try ” best honor’s college” – who hands that out?
Lorenzo Ward and his Division II assistants CHOKED on the gas pipe. It’s time to get an SEC-level DC back at Carolina. We have a piece up about it on SCPSD.
Bravo Foxtrot Delta
Dearest Troll: Anybody pinning that loss on Ward’s unit doesn’t know what they are talking about. But seeing as you never know what you’re talking about, it makes sense …
Blowing a 13-point lead w/ six minutes left, IS THE DEFENSE’S FAULT.
I see A LOT of people trying to be unique by blaming it on the offense. The offense was not great, but it WON the game, until the D gave it away. Don’t make yourself look stupid by trying to be too smart. The Defensive coaching staff is toast.
Fits is wrong.
You’re a Communist.
You’re about as original as he, and the rest of you cliche drones, are.
Ever thought of THINKING????
would you mind giving us an EXAMPLE????
FITS thinks it’s the offense you Dumb@$$. You and BJB – and several of the other pack-thinkers – agree with him.
And: I think the white officer who shot that black motorist panicked, effed up, and did not shoot him because he hates black people, like all of you pop culture dolts believe.
You think Obama is lord-god, with a great economy and high success. Romney would have turned the country in the right direction by now. …I think Obama’s a F*#k up…And Haley is doing much better than Sheheen could ever do as gov….and on and on…and I’m right in every case, where you call it wrong.
About every premise I offer, you brain-dead, pack think imbeciles oppose. You are an example of one mind-numb cliche after another.
I meant an example of thinking
LMAO. Good one…or, are you THAT stupid?
THAT stupid?
——
to accept that as an example of thinking?
Nope.
Sometimes I think you post just so I’ll respond, to make you feel a little smarter because you can engage me.
There is really never very much substance – or originality – in anything you say. If you’re plain, or think in simple terms, why do you expose yourself, so everybody knows how common you are?
You’d be much more interesting, keeping people guessing. By presenting your mind – in print – you remove all doubt about your intelligence level. And that is likely not something you want people to know about you.
PS: if you really want some idea regarding original thought or insight, go read SCPSD. That may help you. If it doesn’t, there is likely not much hope for you w/o a major transformation.
Sometimes I think you post just so I’ll respond, to make you feel a little smarter.
——–
so this is your example? That *sometimes* you think I post just so you’ll respond?
I guess if that’s the best you can do, I’ll accept it, but you’re going to have to do some extra credit if you expect to pass this course!
I guess I fell for it. Kudos to you for pulling off a coup (of sorts.) I should never let myself get into a conversation w/ a FITS Dumb@$$…all it can do is bring me down, and make you look better. You remind me of a character from the 60s TV show Green Acres. Absurdly stupid. And you wonder why I usually ignore you.
I’d say you reminded me of someone, but I’ve never heard or seen anyone as insipid and totally without merit as your posts make you out to be.
Perhaps the way you repeat yourself ad nauseum could be reminiscent of a metronome, but your timing sucks too.
LMAO: I really P!$$#d you off didn’t I? That usually happens when I hit the nail on the head – BOOM!!! – ….Thanks for making it worth my while.
actually, when a dog pisses on the drunk in the gutter – it’s not because he’s pissed… and it’s not really an opinion… it’s just a convenient place to piss.
10+
you *promised*! :(
Points
Aren’t you Saluda Rapids, the pay day lender loser from the old gogamecocks.com forum? Yea you’re that imbecile.
Aren’t you the liar, who can only manufacture Bull-$#!* that feeds you mythology, because you are too stupid to think of anything substantial to say? (:
Shit, Tango…the offense only went 338 yards the whole fucking game?
I bet SC wishes they gave the W on yds.
Again: When you lead by 13 with 6 mins left, the D lost it. The offense did its job. Go read SCPSD and get some insight about some of the issues w/ the D. And find out SS’s and Lo’s demeanor after the game. It may help educate you…instead of reading regurgitation, and the obvious, on here.
I was wondering why the loss of the game was the offense’s fault. Sure, they didn’t score anything, but the defense, in 7 minutes, gave the game away.
Don’t blame the defense. SEC football is catching up with the rest of the nation. 20 points is the third lowest score Carolina has gotten in 2012, 2013 and so far in 2014. USC beat Vanderbilt and F.U. with fewer points, but that is getting rare. Most teams that score 21 points are losers and Missouri should have lost also.
Of the 49 games completed so far this week, only three teams won with less than 21 points.
I’ve notices too that football seemed to be getting envious of the high scores in basketball games in college and has been headed in that direction. In the win over GA the state paper had “deeee-fense”/as the headline and I thought ‘really? You let them get thirty five points?’ Maybe the gold standard now is to keep teams under 40 for great defenses. Then here, our defense resolves like a wet paper towel in the last 7 minutes into what I would call the ” melted butter formation” and everyone’s praising them for the ‘moral victory’/sheesh.
In the last minutes of a game, the team that is behind takes risks to score. They risk interceptions but otherwise it is hard on defenses, pass interference etc… Most offenses can score in desperation if they aren’t intercepted.
Eh, I’ll give you on the blame the offense card, USC showed they clearly were not capable of what you just stated, and did their best to get off the field as fast as possible in the last few drives to ensure Mizzou could have all the time chances they needed when they should have been truing to run the clock down to zero…
That’s exactly what I was expecting. At the end of the ECU game, Carolina ground off 10:35 off the clock.
13-point lead w/ six minutes to go, and you BLOW it. It is the defense’s fault. You don’t do yourself any favors trying to deny that.
Them cocks are sucking themselves, Tango!
My God…..INDIANA beat Missouri AT Missouri after losing to Bowling Green which Wisconsin beat by 60 points.
SEC is as over hyped this year as Tom Ervin,T-Rav and Rand Paul.
“Heartbreaker”??? This was just a sloppily played game by both teams… at one point I was wondering if they were trying to set the record for most punts in a game.
I do believe this will be Slurrier’s final year, the rebuilding years weren’t supposed to start until next year. They might as well bench Thompson, his arm is just too strong for the too slow SEC receivers.
No chance. USC still has MILLIONS of dollars they can give him….
Have you read any of the Gamecock boards? I know it’s the typical calling for the heads bandwagon, but they’re talking about his post-game press conference, he spent more time sucking his teeth than talking. He’s lost his fire, the only thing he’s coaching for now is to keep his kids employed. Because if he quits Jr. is coaching high school somewhere and Scottie suddenly loses his $60k made up job with the athletic department.
Is it just me or should there not be an overwhelming concern and discussion regarding Dylan Thompson’s downfield accuracy (or lack thereof) of passes 25 yards and further. Watch film from Georgia, Vandy, and it is even more rampant and apparent in tonight’s game. Come on, it is blatantly obviouse Thompson is neither consistent or accurate with his down field throws. Where is the conversation regarding this urgent matter?
“regarding this urgent matter?”
——————-
An “urgent matter” is stopping at the local MoJo Gas and Pet Playground Park and wondering if Mahmoud Mojooly has watered down the gas again…..
New in state rankings –
1 Clemson
2 Coastal Carolina
3 USC
I’ll agree with no. 3, I’d like to see coastal and Clem head to head first on 1 and 2 tho.
Teams that are not as good as we thought they would be:
Florida State
Sakerlina
UNC
Teams that are better than we thought they would be:
Texas A&M
Tennessee
Arkansas
East Carolina
Miss. State
NC State
Teams that are about what we thought they would be:
Clemson
Georgia
Bama
Auburn
Tough row to hoe for Sakerlina. Clemson stops the streak at 5.
TBG is full of truthiness today.
Great photo, by the way, and it should be the next cover of Sports Illustrated… may even be a Pulitzer Prize winner (who took it?)
The defender reminds me of Pepe Le Pew.
ha! — you are so right!
Isn’t that the bambi/thumper dance?
“Isn’t that the bambi/thumper dance?”
LOL. Too funny!
I didn’t see the pepe le pew comment – that was priceless!
Just looked at the new Coaches Poll: Didn’t see the Cocks?
Do football players get erections when they’re rubbing all over one another?
Do you get one when it’s “3rd and 9?”
Nah.They’re not my type.If you Google,’wrestling boner youtube’,it’s very amusing.
I’ll take your word for it..
For a :”value producer” Willie sure takes a lot of vacations!

Please Clemson fans don’t get on here and do the same crap SCAR does to us when an article is written. Let’s show more class. SCAR fans, don’t turn on your team so fast. Win or lose be a good fan.
