By FITSNews || Country music star Kenny Chesney will be the “guest picker” when ESPN’s College GameDay program comes to the University of South Carolina this weekend.
Wait … isn’t Chesney a University of Tennessee fan?
Um, yes. Although as our intrepid columnist Liz Gunn noted, he co-produced a recent documentary about Gamecock head football coach Steve Spurrier.
Still … does that mean Chesney should have been given this coveted spot?
Last time ESPN’s GameDay rolled into town, pop-turned-country singer Darius Rucker was the “guest picker” – i.e. the celebrity who joins analysts Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard in predicting who will win the day’s college football games.
Like Rucker, Chesney will also perform during his appearance on the University of South Carolina’s historic Horseshoe campus. Two years ago, Chesney appeared on GameDay in Knoxville, Tennessee prior to the Volunteers game against Florida.
College GameDay airs at 9:00 a.m. EDT on ESPN. This is the show’s seventh appearance in Columbia.
RAPID REACTION
@fitsnews doesn't look like they'll go to Knoxville anytime soon.

Chesney and Spurrier are tight. In fact, Chesney co-produced in a documentary about Spurrier named “The Believer” that aired on the SEC Network shortly before A&M dismantled the Gamecocks.

Yeah that’s mentioned in this article.
Did it win an Emmy?
— had no idea Chesney was anything more than another ‘hat-act’ guitar picker, but that piece on the HBC was exceptionally well done. I was both surprised & delighted.
Better than Finebaum any day of the week. The best part about watching Finebaum is when the air leaks out of his chair on the set and he has to pump himself back up again.
Too bad he’s a terrible musician. Nashville music is about as good as Nashville college football teams. It’s insulting that guys like this tool are even referred to as “country music artists” considering the brilliance of people like Willy, Cash, Owens, Jones, Williams Sr., Cline, Emmylou… Bob Dylan is more country than Kenny freakin’ Chesney… and I feel just as disgusted by Rucker changing his label to “country” and then doing crap.
bull – freakin – shit!… look, I don’t really even call myself a huge country music fan; however, over the past year, I started listening to it to better understand it. And in my opinion, that crap about the old stuff being better is hogwash… IMHO, that Bakersfield sound stuff from the 1960s is where the wheels actually began to come off country music. Sure, Chesney’s attempt at being Jimmy Buffet is pretty lame; however, beyond that, that Tennessee native’s body of work is pretty solid and more in line with Hank Williams than Buck Owens is…
Country music is either David Alan Coe, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash, or its Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney and Colt Ford.
You make the call.
Why, because they must be jail time serving or just general outlawish assholes to be considered country music stars? Whatever… Seriously, it’s called “country” music, not “outlaw” music… perhaps with your love of law breaking music, you’d be better served to listen to gangsta rap..
If David Alan Coe ain’t country…TBG will kiss your ass.
You’re obviously not a huge country music fan.
So the Bakersfield, California, glam, Hee Haw sound is more authentically country than the twang of a Tennessee boy?.. yeah, whatever, ye all knowing grand poobah of country.
How many times did you see,Roy Acuff?
people get worked up over the smallest things. Hey Angel, psst, it is called personal preferences for a reason. Chill out.
Don’t forget,Gram Parsons;)
Dang right.
Guess Connor Shaw was busy this weekend, with him being in town and all…
I’m just waiting to hear him choose to finally tell everyone he is ghey.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Pretty sure Renee Z’s exit was precipitated by his preferences. Coming out is not a great career move for a “country” star, however…
So we’re gonna hear more Cheney picks this year than FitsPicks?
