JASPER COUNTY MAY BE THE BIGGEST GOVERNMENT GOAT SHOW IN AMERICA

By FITSNews  ||  This website has provided extensive coverage of the unmitigated disaster that is the Jasper County (S.C.) school district.  For those of you keeping score at home, Jasper County is the worst-performing government-run school district in South Carolina – which features the worst government-run school system in America.

Ever wonder why that’s the case?

Well, here’s a sneak peek into how Jasper County handles its business – specifically a clip from a school board meeting earlier this month in which the district’s barely literate board chairwoman, Berty Riley, rammed through a new construction contract.

Never mind that none of the members of the board had even seen the contract before voting on it – or that Riley achieved her majority by yelling “let me see these hands up – I want to see them” at other board members who did not immediately raise their hands when the vote was called.

After the vote, Riley proceeded to have police officers remove an elderly white woman she deemed to be “disruptive” – as well as two members of the S.C. House of Representatives.

“If anybody else wanna be removed you can do it too!” Riley yelled as police escorted the woman (and the two lawmakers) from the premises.

Take a look …

(Click to play)

Wow …

That’s your government-run school system at work, South Carolina.

As we’ve pointed out in the past, Jasper County loves to reward failure.  But its leaders also love to silence anyone daring to question them.

Just last week, in fact, the district fired a volunteer who had the audacity to question the district’s ongoing academic ineptitude.  According to The (Hilton Head, S.C.) Island Packet , the district fired a volunteer named Kevin Karg less than 24 hours after he presented the board with data showing “a years-long decline in student performance.”

“While the district appreciates all of its volunteers, it is important that all are within the schools to be a positive influence on all of the students, faculty and staff at all times,” a statement from the district read.

Good God …

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley had a chance to investigate this district last September but took a pass – part of her ongoing devotion to the Palmetto State’s failed status quo.

As for this website we will continue to expose nonsense like this while pushing for universal parental choice … because no student should be forced to remain trapped in perpetually failing districts.

Awarding a contract and not allowing the district’s representatives to look it over and ask any questions? MB Kahn Construction?
Something is wrong here. Is Riley set to get kickbacks? Envelopes stuffed with cash? She has a very belligerent attitude. Federal funds are to be used for the construction work. And it appears that a forensic investigation by federal authorities is in order. Meanwhile, that contract needs to be blocked with court action until an full and complete investigation can be had into MB Kahn and Riley.

We spend maybe $400/ year to homeschool up to 2 children at the moment. The youngest will start next year. That doesn’t include our taxes which continue to go to the failing public school system of which our children are not a part. I advocate for NSA tax credits for those of us who help out the failing public school system.

Do you take them to the mall during the day? McDonalds for lunch? “Field trips” to the grocery store and to Wal-Mart? How will they adapt socially? How will they learn to cope effectively with the various teaching personalities and teaching styles that college professors will demonstrate when all they are used to is mommy or daddy teaching all subjects. How will they cope when their co-worker in their first job believes in a different god? What will they do when everyone speaks of the experiences they had in high school? Will they sit quietly and realize that mommy and daddy really put their own interests first? Just some questions that came to mind one day when pondering what home schooling is really about.

All strawman questions from those who think government education is the end all answer to everything. Believe it or not, homeschooling is quite organized and quite social.

Tom September 22, 2014 at 2:52 pm

Do conservatives get a book that tells them to call everything they don’t agree with a straw man question? Did your private school teach you what a straw man question is? Do you even know what a straw man question is? The question is rhetorical, as the answer is clearly, yes, no, no.

Chris Coppenbarger September 22, 2014 at 3:01 pm

No book here. Simply put, everyone one of “Home Screwal” questions was a strawman put forth by someone who obviously has no idea about homeschooling. As “Golf Clap” put it, stereotyping with strawman questions. So, in essence, your reply is unnecessary.

But since you took the time, how is it “mommy and daddy really put their own interests first”?

It seems like a huge pain the ass to homeschool kids instead of just shipping them off to a public school.

Mary September 22, 2014 at 2:44 pm

How are you helping out the public school system? Why should you not have to pay your share of the cost of public education just like everyone else?
Not all public schools are failing. We have excellent public schools where I live.

Cause he’s paying out of pocket to educate his kids?

Mary September 22, 2014 at 2:48 pm

That is his choice. Has nothing to do with his obligation to support public education. People who do not have kids pay for public education. Keeping his kids out of school does nothing for the local school. In fact it probably hurts it.

Just a guess September 22, 2014 at 2:52 pm

“That is his choice.”

That’s right, are you not for choices?

“Has nothing to do with his obligation to support public education.”

lol! Really? Educating his kids has nothing to do with public education? Do your really believe that?

Isn’t the goal of public education, to educate the public?

Public: ordinary people in general; the community.

He’s actually achieving the very goal of public education and saving taxpayer dollars in doing so.

Smirks September 22, 2014 at 3:21 pm

That’s right, are you not for choices?

That’s a bullshit argument. No one is contesting one’s right to choose, we are contesting the fact that he wants to pay less in taxes than everyone else for it when the fact remains he has access to public schools if he so chooses.

Educating his kids has nothing to do with public education? Do your really believe that?

I do. Kids can come out from public education and do wonderfully. A lot of the shortfalls go away when parents pay a bit more attention to their kids’ grades and helps them with their troubles.

Besides that, people use alternative means of education for various reasons. Some like to spend more to make sure their kid is taught by the best, which may not be feasible for public education. Others send their kids to religious schools. Some do homeschooling so they have greater control themselves over what their kids learn and have firsthand knowledge of what they are learning.

That’s fine and all, but society still needs to ensure public education is alive and well for those who don’t have that option. Even if public education is absolute crap, it’s better than nothing at all.

He’s actually achieving the very goal of public education and saving taxpayer dollars in doing so.

Saving taxpayer dollars at the given moment.

But hey, so is someone who chooses not to have kids at all, but they also pay for public education. I’m sure the gas tax I pay also funds roads I’ll never drive on in my entire life, but who cares? Just like my phone bill has a charge on it that goes towards paying for extending services out in the boonies, something I’m not likely to use for myself, but who cares?

Enough with the “Me! Me! Me!” attitude, when tax dollars are spent for the greater good of society it’s a hell of a lot better than when it is spent on random useless shit that serves a minority of well-off people who have the means to help themselves. A kid with a crap high school education still has better odds in life than a kid who has less than a 5th grade education.

Just a guess September 22, 2014 at 3:31 pm

“No one is contesting one’s right to choose, we are contesting the fact that he wants to pay less in taxes than everyone else for it when the fact remains he has access to public schools if he so chooses.”

You miss that if he can’t afford a private school or home school(and home school does cost money) without more of his own money(meaning less taken from him) then the choice is taken from him…both literally and monetarily.

“Saving taxpayer dollars at the given moment.”

I’m glad that you are one of the honest commenters on the other side of the debate. Usually you get fanatics trying to argue that it doesn’t save taxpayer money.

Tom September 22, 2014 at 6:29 pm

The state does not guarantee a person the income to pay for private school, it guarantees each person access to a public school.
Taxes are not theft. They are your share of the cost of government. If you do not pay your share someone else has to pay more. So the public is paying for you to use the services of a private business. It is no different than saying since I don’t drive, I should not have to pay for roads, or since I have a car, I should not have to pay for public transportation, or since I have a gun to defend myself, I should not have to pay for the police.
Taking two kids out of a school of 1000 kids or more saves the school district virtually nothing. In fact it hurts the school district, because responsible parents are not trying to make the schools better.

Just a guess September 22, 2014 at 7:15 pm

“Taxes are not theft.”

Yes they are.

Make them voluntary and see how much you collect if you think otherwise.

Just a guess September 22, 2014 at 7:17 pm

One other thing:

“In fact it hurts the school district, because responsible parents are not trying to make the schools better.”

That’s right, their focus(rightly), is on their kids, not the school. So the responsible parent isn’t sacrificing his kid on the altar of altruism.

cbh1961 September 23, 2014 at 8:26 am

Let’s not forget that schools receive money based on number of students enrolled in that school. Less kids less money!

TontoBubbaGoldstein September 22, 2014 at 6:02 pm

…his obligation to support public education.

I don’t use my county’s rec department, senior center, dump sites for garbage and a lot of other services that are there for me to use. Guess what, even though I don’t use them…………………I still have to pay for them with my tax dollars.

Good Point! September 23, 2014 at 9:28 am

So what’s your point, that the system needs to change and focus on user fees instead of blanket inefficient taxation?

Smirks September 22, 2014 at 2:57 pm

That doesn’t include our taxes which continue to go to the failing public school system of which our children are not a part.

Your children are not a part of the public school system at this present moment in time. Just like my future kids aren’t, because they don’t even exist yet. But, at any time, you could choose to send them. At any time, something may happen where you can no longer homeschool them, then you might need to. And they will welcome your kids with open arms.

Everyone that can pays into it because society deems public education as a necessity for young kids. You can afford private school? Great! Poor kids can’t. You have the ability to homeschool? Great! Families where all parents/guardians work long hours usually can’t.

The point of education reform should be to improve education for -everyone- and not give tax breaks to some and do diddly squat for others. If you’re pissed off at government wasting your hard earned money then bitch about something that doesn’t actually help the common man, such as unfunded wars and domestic spying.

Reply
Chris Coppenbarger September 22, 2014 at 3:04 pm

Which is why I advocate for tax credits for all. If a poor family can get a tax credit to send their kids to a private school, then so be it.

Tom September 22, 2014 at 6:41 pm

Tax credits mean you do not pay your share of the cost of operating the state. If you do not pay your share others have to pay more to make up for the fact you did not pay your fair share. That means other people will pay more tax or receive fewer benefits of government so the state can come up with money to help you pay for private school. Hardly fair.

Equality for all September 22, 2014 at 8:42 pm

See Chris, Tom is all about the “fairness”. He doesn’t care that you want to homeschool your kids and save taxpayer money. He wants you to pay his idea of “fair” and doesn’t care if the school you might be forced to send them to sucks balls.

As long as everyone is forced to pay for the same shitty schooling and, ideally of course, send their kids their to suffer along with all the rest, then it’s “fair”.

Then why doesn’t the private sector do that?
If you are sure it can be done at lower cost AND handle every kid, why not tell us where that has been done?
The problem with school choice movement is it offers an illusion that it can certainly save my kid’s education, and most other kids be damned, and no offer to help all or even most kids. But to give the illusory choice, they would gut the system that could be better but does help, even if just a little , most who go through it.

Jasper school district given no details in federal probe

By SARAH BOWMAN

sbowman@beaufortgazette.com March 10, 2014

An investigation by the FBI, the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS, and the S.C. Law Enforcement Division into alleged criminal activity in the Jasper County School District is ongoing, according to a school board leader.

However, the district has not been given details as to the cause or subject of the investigation, school board chairwoman Berty Riley said in a statement Monday at the district’s meeting.

Several district-level employees have been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury in Columbia in April related to the investigation, according to school board attorney Ken Childs with Columbia-based Childs & Halligan. Childs would not name those employees.

“I, personally, have no knowledge whatsoever of any illegal or criminal activity by any district employees, board members, and certainly not by the district superintendent,” Riley said Monday.

In a letter to Jasper County schools, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of South Carolina asked that the district maintain and not destroy certain information: all district financial documents; employment files for the superintendent and other administrators; board meeting minutes; and correspondence between employees.

State Reps. Bill Herbkersman, R-District 118, and Weston Newton, R-District 120, attended the meeting in hopes of setting up a public hearing for a potential redistricting map, but they did not request to be on the agenda.

Herbkersman and Newton accompanied Bartoldus out of the room after telling officers that removing Bartoldus from the room was illegal.

“It’s disappointing,” Newton said. “I was suggesting to the officer that it’s inappropriate to remove her from the meeting for being assembled in a public place. So the officer said that’s fine and we followed them out into the hallway.”

Newton said the officers’ actions did not abide by the law.

“It’s illegal in general,” Newton said. “I didn’t think they conducted meetings like that.”

Anyone who suspects that a violation of the law has been committed by a public official, public member, or public employee may file a complaint with the State Ethics Commission. The State Ethics Commission does not have jurisdiction over members of the General Assembly. The members and candidates for House of Representatives and Senate report to their respective Ethics Committee. FAXED COPIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. The State Ethics Commission is also authorized to file a complaint against any public official, public employee, or public member who is suspected of violating the Ethics Reform Act.

ROFLMAO. A previous member of the School Board AND Jasper County Council was found guilty of numerous election law and in-office violations. They fined him $18,000, with yearly interest increases. He never paid a dime, and was proud of it; even bragged about it. No further prosecution was done. AND he keeps on running for office…

Yeah. Right. Send everything to that Lawyer Hazelwood chick. She is on the up and up. (NOT!) She is CONTROLLED completely by the old time Democrats in power. Pitiful excuse. The moment I get a terminal disease, I will write up and publish my experiences with this group. “Ethics” group.

Gotta say it:: She is one shrill, ugly(acting) piece of work stupid/dumb bitch of a voo-doo female — and she’s wearing a shitty wig, too! I’m wondering if she is holding a wad of $100’s as big as a roll of toilet paper between her legs?

She drives a new Cadillac, that’s been confirmed. And she produces votes for the house members and state senators from the Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton County districts. ALL of these House members and state senators voted for Jean Toal after meetings with the Black Legislative Caucus last February. Don’t believe it? Get Sic Willie to call his Toal voting buddy Tom Davis and ask him.

Somebody is going to get hurt or worse, shot and killed in Jasper County is something isn’t done soon. It is that bad down here. Mick Zais tried to help a few months ago and the Superintendent and Board Chairman were too busy to permit him to visit their imperial offices.

Nobody really believes the FBI is down here auditing and investigating anything except possibly the golf courses at Bluffton and Hilton Head Island.

As a parent in Jasper County, I find it appalling that this bitch is driving a luxury vehicle when my children are carrying around decade old text books. If you wee wondering where all of the government money is going in Jasper County….look no further!!!!

i think the state makes the decision if they will fund new textbooks, i dont think think the district decides that.

Please keep an eye on Marlboro County. If they can get another one of the group elected they will be just as bad. It appears that Tiller is the real Chairperson there!

In the good ole days, one could get a Masters in Education at SC State in 12 weeks – or one summer. It took two summers to get a PhD.

God forbid the citizens in attendance have anything to say! The AG needs to investigate this county.

The Democratic Party controlled FBI supposedly has a couple of FBI men down there investigating. NOTHING will happen, but the golf handicaps of those G-men may go down a couple of strokes…..

It just nauseates me to no end to see stuff like this. This is exactly how the whole district is run and has been forever–will it ever change?? I worked there for many years and they are the most ghetto, racist bunch of people ever. The finance people don’t even know what the definition of finance is. Washington (I won’t even refer to her as a doctor) is such a scam. Not a one of them gives a damn about any of the kids. UGH.

Probably builds half the schools in this state. The board is represented by Ken Childs, who represents probably more than half the school boards in the state and has never met an executive session he would not say is legit. Lost plenty if FOIA suits but continues to advise boards to go behind closed doors.

Many of their sub contractors use illegal aliens, hire them as sub contractors and issue 1099s. They pay no taxes. Most of them do metal studs and drywall, concrete work, brick and masonary, ceiling tile systems, painting.
Construction is like #4 in the nation has one of the most corrupt businesses in the USA. Most of the contractors do not follow design specs, building codes – engage in fraud, and then there are the kickbacks. Inspectors are worthless. Caught up in it all, and will look the other way for a cash.

That ‘elderly woman’ happens to be one of my friends. All she did was CLAP and CHEER when someone said something – when two State Reps from neighboring Beaufort County in attendance leapt to her defense, they were booted as well. Jasper County has historically been the worst performing school in the State, because – as two legislators from Jasper County told me, at two different times – if they ensure that the populace cannot think or reason for themselves, then they assure them and their contributors of continuing support and profit. They started a daycare on the HS campus for the children of students. They once offered letter jackets to any student who could pass the SAT with a score over 400 (not a misprint- yes I know how the SAT is graded) – only 4 got letter jackets for their ‘achievement’. Legislators and school board members from Jasper County – both black and white – are nothing but 21st century multi-generational slave owners; they know it and are proud of it.

It’s beyond sad, my son graduated in the top 25 of his class and STILL had to settle for uscb instead of usc Columbia. These kids just don’t even have a chance at true success. Let’s not even talk about the social mess inside these schools, the academic and administration issues are just the tip of the iceberg. I guarantee you will hear more outlandish stories in the future now that the media is finally paying attention.

Doesn’t anyone else think that it’s beyond coincidence that the low performing school districts are in the most poverty ridden areas and the national leading schools are in the richest areas? I think that’s the problem, that education funding comes from county taxes instead of state taxes. If you want to fix Jasper schools, then maybe some tax money should come out of Charleston/Greenville/Lexington counties to help these areas out. How can we expect these counties to perform any better than a third world nation if they are as poor as a third world nation.
