GOVERNOR CALLS ON SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE TO STEP DOWN … SOMEHOW ISN’T STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley waded into the scandal surrounding embattled Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell – calling on the veteran legislative leader to step down in the wake of his indictment on nine counts of public corruption.

Really, governor?  Really?

We don’t disagree with Haley’s assessment of the situation.  Hell, we called on Harrell to resign last February.  But Haley calling on anyone to step down for their ethical shortcomings strikes us as the height of hypocrisy.

For those of you just waking up from a two-year nap, Haley has done far worse than Harrell – and gotten away with it.

The governor was accused of multiple abuses of power during her six years as a member of the S.C. House of Representatives. Specifically, she was accused of illegally lobbying on behalf of Lexington Medical Center, her former employer from 2008-10. Haley was also accused of illegally lobbying on behalf of Wilbur Smith Associates – an engineering firm with extensive business before the state – and failing to report nearly $50,000 in income received from the company between 2007-09.

Like Harrell, the governor was also caught lying … and attempting to smear her political enemies in response to the allegations against her.

Seriously … Haley is hands-down the most ethically challenged public official in the Palmetto State.  And yet she felt she had the room to call on somebody else  to step down?

Wow …

Haley’s decision to enter this fray strikes us as a golden opportunity for Harrell …

The Speaker can now (effectively, we might add) argue that if a Richland County grand jury has the authority to indict him for campaign finance violations, it also has the authority (the obligation, even) to indict Haley for her much more serious criminal conduct.

Frankly, we think the book (several stacks of books actually) should be thrown at both of them …

Recall election needed September 11, 2014 at 8:21 am

Enhance governmental accountability by allowing registered voters to recall
elected officials who violate the trust placed in them by the electorate. Many
states allow such recall efforts if enough voters are upset with the actions of
an elected official. We in South Carolina need this ability as well. This is a
strong weapon in maintaining government OF the people, BY the people and FOR the
people instead of government by special interests.

It is crazy, Wanda.
Years ago, I thought she might have (or at least learn) how to run the state. But the more I started seeing how she conducts business, the more how high paying government jobs were given to those with no real successful experience at managing things, the more I started seeing trouble. And it brewed – and brewed – and brewed, then festered into one big zit waiting to be popped.
A good leader does not micro manage. But a good manager often checks on things and measure performance and efficiency. A good manager looks for problems and improves upon them – organizes and has the entire team in sync with how things are run and carried out. I have not seen that here with her. I see someone who has been getting experience at managing and being a governor via “on the job training” and from making costly, embarrassing mistakes – at the expense of over 4.7 million South Carolina citizens.
Anyone looking past whatever charm and pleasant personality – a friendly smile – can see, that she is not worthy of another term. Let someone else have the opportunity being governor. Keeping her around, sad to say, would be a very bad decision for voters to make.

“Why is it that politics attracts so many cockroaches?”

Libido Dominandi:

“Augustine writes of the City of God:

For if we inquire whence it is, God created it; or whence its wisdom,
God illumined it; or whence its blessedness, God is its bliss. It has
its form by subsisting in Him; its enlightenment by contemplating Him;
its joy by abiding in Him. It is; it sees; it loves. In God’s eternity
is its life; in God’s truth is its light; in God’s goodness is its joy.1

By contrast, the City of Man is the secular order. It is the earthly
city ruled by humans for their own gain using their own rules. Above
all, says Augustine, it “is itself ruled by the lust of rule.”2
“The lust of rule” is a translation of the Latin libido dominandi. As
Richard John Neuhaus puts it, libido dominandi is “the lust for power,
advantage, and glory.” It shouts, “My way or no way!”

This lust for domination doesn’t just characterize politics in the City
of Man, it characterizes each of us. The libido dominandi is that within
each of us that plots and strives to have our own way and force others
do as we say. As such, it is the controlling passion of our fallen
nature and, thus, of our fallen world.

We see this lust to dominate beginning with the Fall in the Garden of Eden.

“You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows
that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like
God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the
tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for
gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her
husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (Genesis 3:4-6)

The desire to “be like God” — great, glorious, and in control — led to all the misery in the world.”

Reply
Bible Thumper September 10, 2014 at 11:28 pm

Yes. It led to all the misery, but it also led to all the freedom in the world. God put the tree in the garden to give man a choice. God didn’t have to put the tree in the garden. Choice is the essence of freedom and the most important choices require a knowledge of good and evil. That is why we can’t blame God for our misery. We descended from Adam and Eve and share their nature. Therefore we share the same consequences.

Reply
Government Worship September 11, 2014 at 9:01 am

“Choice is the essence of freedom and the most important choices require a knowledge of good and evil. ”

By reading Augustine’s full argument, you realize that the nature of man makes his individual recognition of what is classified as “good” or “evil” irrelevant in determining if he should have control over other men, because by his very nature it is a corrupt affair, hence naturally mans control over one another should be as limited as possible,(nonexistent ideally) which is why government is an inherently evil organization.

Reply
Bible Thumper September 11, 2014 at 7:13 pm

Man is inherently evil. The more virtuous the citizens are the less government is necessary.

“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”
Benjamin Franklin

Columbia, SC (WLTX) – Lexington County court records obtained by
WLTX.com show the South Carolina Department of Social Services had at
least 2 complaints on the Jones family.

The most recent complaint,
received August 7, 2014, was still open when deputies learned the 5
Lexington County children were missing. The complaint alleged some kind
of abuse done by the father to his children.

Previous Coverage:Dad to Be Charged with Murder of 5 Kids

Caseworkers
with Lexington County DSS responded to the Jones home the same day of
the complaint according to DSS Law Enforcement Liaison Jackie Swindler.

“A
seasoned Lexington County caseworker along with the Lexington County
Sheriff’s Department interviewed the children, interviewed Mr. Jones,
interviewed neighbors,” Swindler said. “At that time, there was nothing
to alarm them immediately, nothing that showed the children were in any
kind of imminent danger or peril.”

Swindler said caseworkers had
not made a second visit to the Jones home since their initial visit
after the August 7th complaint.

Lexington county caseworkers had
scheduled an unannounced second visit according to Swindler. He
wouldn’t give details on why the second visit didn’t occur after the
children were reported missing.

State law says caseworkers have up
to 45 days to investigate the home, and could visit the home a second
time during that investigation. Lexington DSS was within a 45 day
limit.

Court records from the Jones’ divorce also say DSS was called on the children’s mother back in 2011.

More
details on the family’s involvement with DSS are expected to come in a
case file the agency said it would release sometime Wednesday.

Haley did the right thing telling Harrell to resign. It is not hypocritical, because she has never been indicted.

It is silly to say that what Haley was accused of is worse than what Harrell is indicted for. Harrell is indicted for fraud in billing his campaign. He is accused of altering documents that are part of an investigation.
