RACIAL POWDER KEG ABOUT TO EXPLODE?

The assistant manager of a Subway restaurant on Broad River road was shot on Thursday afternoon by a S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) officer after being pulled over near a convenience store.

Ho-hum, right?  Maybe not …

According to WLTX TV 19 (CBS – Columbia, S.C.), the SCHP has confirmed the basics: That a state trooper shot a man during a traffic stop.  And while they’re not saying much else about the incident itself, other statements are causing watchdogs to read between the lines.

Unknown at this point are several critical facts: What precipitated the shooting, whether the victim of the shooting was armed, the current condition of the victim and (of course) the ethnicity of the trooper and the individual who was shot.

What we do know is that the trooper in question has been placed on administrative leave – and the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has opened an investigation into the matter.

Also, the WLTX report references “a heavy police presence” in the area in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

All of that is “standard protocol,” sure … but there appears to be more to this story.

WLTX received an interesting statement from S.C. Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) director Leroy Smith in response to the shooting.  Smith’s statement referenced “questions” being asked by members of the local black community – and urged said community to “be patient.”

Ruh-roh …

“This incident is still very fresh, and we know the public and community have many questions at this time,” Smith’s statement read. “We want to be fully transparent, and I can assure the community that we are assisting in every way to ensure a full and thorough investigation. As SLED conducts the investigation, we ask the community to be patient with us until further information can be released.”

Hmmmm …

Sources familiar with the incident tell FITS the victim involved in this shooting was black … and some have strongly suggested he was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

Assuming the officer who fired the shots was white … yeah.  In the wake of what happened in Ferguson, Missouri last month, we don’t have to tell you what this case could turn into, do we?

Obviously we’re not going to rush to judgment regarding any aspect of this case, but right out of the gate it strikes us as further proof of our call to independently wire all law enforcement officers.

UPDATE: The shooting victim – 35-year-old Levar Edward Jones of Columbia – was pulled over by Highway Patrol officer Lance Corporal C.M. Groubert for not wearing his seat belt.  Jones is black, Groubert is white.

Well, since we’ve slowly eroded the doctrine of posse comitatus, the police state need look no further than a short trip down I-26 when we decide to call in the MRAPs.

I’m glad that will be convenient. ( <— Sarcasm font).

At least the person who was shot has a chance to tell their side of the story this time, assuming they do survive.

I find it interesting that while no factual information has been released, the news media jumps to a conclusion that does not favor the police. Next the celebs will be here with their commentaries, etc. SLED is a very good organization that will properly investigate and present their findings to Solicitor Dan Johnson who is a very professional prosecutor and based on the decision by the Solicitor, the matter will either be submitted to a grand jury or the officer will be exonerated. PLEASE LET THEM DO THEIR JOBS before anyone jumps to any early conclusions.

I don’t find it interesting at all. I still find it interesting that the majority of the public still doesn’t comprehend that the media is a business. (Folks included)

As such, their primary goal is increasing readership, and consequently, advertisements. The truth is, no matter how hard a media organization can tout its “non-biased” status, they are all biased when it comes to their balance sheet.

So am I surprised? Nope.

This is the only site that I have seen that is reporting administrative leave. All the others say administrative duty which is the standard policy for a DPS officer whose has a shooting being investigated and reviewed. In other words, the trooper is still working but restricted to an office or desk duty and not on the road while the shooting is being investigated by SLED and then reviewed by DPS OPR prior to a final employment decision by Director Smith.

Somehow the media has decided that one must be armed to justify being shot by the police. All that is required for a police officer to shoot you is that the suspect have the Ability-Opportunity- and the officer feels his life is in Jeopardy.

Just like the incident in Ferguson. We should not expect a police officer to have to street fight to make an arrest. We don’t pay these guys enough to be beat on and possibly killed in order to prevent someone from getting their feelings hurt.

Who gives a shit that the suspect has a college degree? What does it matter that he is the assistant manager at Subway? Do these facts make him less dangerous?

The media seems to be fanning the flames (along with Fits) to try and stir the pot! We know nothing about this incident and the media would try and make us believe that this trooper just got bored and decided to pull someone over and shoot their ass. Give me a break.

This country is on a slippery slope and a shit storm awaits us at the bottom.

Fairly obvious that it escalated Dip Shit! I have not read anywhere it was a seatbelt. And if it was does that change anything. IF it was a good shoot he is extremely fortunate to be called a “suspect” and not the “deceased”.

There has been a lot of cops killed over frivolous violations. Hell, I heard of one guy getting killed in MO for simply being asked to walk on the sidewalk and he tried to beat the cop to death.

Does anyone remember Detective Melvin Santiago? He was a Jersey City police officer who was shot to death just a month ago, on July 13th. Santiago was white. His killer, Lawrence Campbell, was black. Does anyone recall Obama appearing before national television and calling for justice for Officer Santiagos family? Does anyone recall Eric Holder rushing to Jersey City to see that justice was done?

How about Officer Jeffrey Westerfield. He was a Gary, Indiana police officer who was shot to death last month on July 6th. Westerfield was white. His killer, Carl LeEllis Blount, Jr. was black. Where was Obama? Where was Holder?

Or Officer Perry Renn? He was an Indianapolis, Indiana police officer who was shot to death just last month on July 5th, the day before Officer Westerfield was killed. Officer Renn was white. His killer, Major Davis, was black. I don’t recall any mention by Obama about the untimely death of Officer Renn. And, I doubt that Eric Holder rushed to Indianapolis to make sure justice was done. Or, maybe I just missed it.

Vermillion Parish Deputy Sheriff Allen Bares was gunned down by two men just last June 23rd in Louisiana. Deputy Bares was white. His two killers, Quintlan Richard and Baylon Taylor, were black. Was Obama outraged? Did Eric Holder rush to Louisiana to make sure that the family of Deputy Bares found justice?

Right here in our own state, Detective Charles Dinwiddie of the Killeen (Texas) Police Department was murdered by Marvin Lewis Guy, a black male. Officer Dinwiddie was white. This happened on May 11th, just over two months ago. I don’t even recall seeing anything about that on the news. Certainly, the white citizens in Killeen didn’t take to the streets to loot and burn businesses. Again, I don’t recall any mention by Obama or Holder.

Then, there is Officer Kevin Jordan of the Griffin, Georgia Police Department. He was gunned down just two months ago on May 31st. Officer Jordan was black. His killer, Michael Bowman, was white. This was a white man murdering a black police officer. Where was Jesse Jackson? Where was “The Reverend” Al Sharpton? Was there looting and burning on the streets of Griffin, Georgia? No. In fact, I don’t recall hearing about this one in the news, as well. Why? You can draw your own conclusions.

Over the past 60 days, there have been five reported deaths of police officers by gunshot in the US. Of those, four were white officers who were murdered by black men. Blacks complain that white officers treat black men more aggressively on the street.

You can draw your own conclusions on that one, as well.

I’m a bootlicker because I believe that we as a society should be civil enough to WAIT on a review of EVIDENCE before condemning someone that none of us know absolutely ANYTHING about. I’m a bootlicker because I expect a police officers life to have the same value as a black persons, white person or a green person.

If the trooper is wrong we will know soon enough. If he is right it will be a “coverup” won’t it.

“Who gives a shit that the suspect has a college degree?”

LOL! I’m with you, friend! I recall over a decade ago, a security guard at a local Burger King was making a bank run for the restaurant. Two young thugs-in-training robbed the BK and shot the security officer, hitting him numerous times in the torso and seriously wounding him. He managed to return fire and kill one. Unfortunately, his gun jammed and the other got away and was later arrested, as I recall.

Anyhow, the next day, the headline in The State newspaper headline bleated “Honor Student Shot and Killed By Security Guard”, or drivel to that general effect. It turned out that the “honor student” was apparently near the top of his class in a slacker “program” at some local school or other.

This is just the stupid shit that the media does, apparently in its eternal quest to stir up shit in the community and cause disdain for those who are or were in the right in a given conflict. When I read this stuff, I usually take it with a huge grain of salt.

At this point, after looking at the suits and brass on the scene via WISTV reporting, this shooting is being “managed”. If the victim was to die, the autopsy will be sealed. Autopsy reports should be made public regardless. This smells more and more like a cover up in progress by the SCDPS. Certainly there was a dash cam recording with audio. The gas station security cameras must have been recording as well. Will the public ever see those recordings? If just one citizen’s constitutional rights are taken away, all our constitutional rights are taken away as well.

Huckleberry September 5, 2014 at 1:32 pm

There will be no cover up. If the trooper was wrong you will see a termination relatively quickly when SLED has completed a preliminary investigation and DPS OPR has properly documented the case to support the termination. If the shooting was justified the trooper will return to duty. Simple as that. Keep in mind that this happened at or about 5pm near SLED HQS and the brass would soon be on the road home traveling in this area. So this coupled with the low number of trooper involved shootings does not surprise me of the number of “suits and brass” at the scene.

Reply
Steven A. Smith September 5, 2014 at 2:04 pm

I dunno man, that might open the door for the newest level of “racism” the media and politicians are working diligently to craft, right before our eyes.

I can see it now, “American Policeman Shoots Illegal Mexican Invader During Drug Arrest”. “La Raza Organizes Marches”.

As with other things, it will be politically incorrect to note that the majority of our illegal immigration problem is coming from Mexico or other points south of our Southern border. The problem will be turned in to a “racism” issue, despite the fact that we have many Hispanic people in this country who are citizens or otherwise belong here due to their having gone through the legal and proper channels to be here, obtain citizenship here, or they were born here to people who did these things. As I have noted numerous times, Puerto Ricans are natural-born American citizens. Still, the race-baiters and poverty pimps will find a way to turn a buck off of the issue of illegal immigration.

You are an idiot, To answer your question, No, you can’t get killed by the state for walking down the middle of a street. However, you can be stopped by the police for matching the description of a person that was just involved in crime, (Terry vs. Ohio) you can be detained and questioned for a reasonable length of time, most experts agree on 30 minutes or less without being considered under arrest (investigative detention) If you escalate the situation with words or actions, the officer will justifiably escalate his level of force accordingly, if the officer feels at that very moment that you have the ability and opportunity to cause him great bodily injury or death then he has the right to use deadly force against you. This has been tried over and over in the supreme court. For example if the you were to attempt to reach for the officers gun, you could be shot, if you were to over power or put the officer at a physical disadvantage my pushing him to the ground, you could be shot. If you were to do anything to physically disable the officer like blind him with pepper spray, you could be shot. And guess what, if you get shot you could die. That’s right, It’s the law, It happens all the time, the courts have all agreed.

Was there any mention on this blog of the 70 year old who was shot by the cop in the York/Chester area some months ago?
The old guy got out of his truck at night, reached into the back of his truck and got shot. He was reaching for his cane. He was not killed. But, at his age, I wonder if he will ever fully recover.
There was dashcam video of the cop crying when he realized what he had done. I never watched it or read more of the story than the headlines. A couple of weeks ago, SLED decided the cop would not be charged.
I wonder what it was about the way the old mobility impaired man was reaching for his cane that made the cop think he was about to get shot?
Maybe if so many tiny towns too small to have ever been incorporated had ways to raise money other than traffic stops, stuff like this wouldn’t happen as much.

I haven’t heard the latest on that case… perhaps search a few newspapers’ websites in the area.

I think the dashcam video showed the old man reaching for his cane which was IN THE GUN RACK. Not too smart. Also, when an officer pulls you over, you should turn off the ignition, put the keys on the dash, and remain in your vehicle.

My own personal opinion/guess/speculation is that when this is said and done, it will likely be found that the Trooper made a traffic stop and the bullet trap in this case decided to get violent with him, resulting in said shooting. Hey, we all form opinions based on info available at the time, common “patterns” in life, and other things if we are honest with ourselves and others. This is mine, for now.

That said, I couldn’t help but note the irony of this whole thing about “primary seatbelt enforcement” and whatever part it may have played in this. Seriously, “we are going to protect you from yourself, even if we have to shoot you to do it”. I really believe this is a law we could have done quite well without. If people don’t wear their seatbelt and die as a result, consider it to be natural selection at work. If they choose not to wear one and are thrown clear of a car that catches on fire, rather than being trapped in it, consider it good luck and a good choice by the driver or passenger.

Just to re-clarify, this is not an indictment of the Trooper who was likely just doing the job he is made to do by the powers-that-be and those who want to protect us from ourselves.

Reply
CriticalMass September 8, 2014 at 3:53 am

Seatbelts are needed because they do much more than “save you from yourself.” If you need to brake and swerve to avoid an accident, belts keep you planted so you can control your vehicle. If you’re not belted, you can be thrown over to the passenger side and you lose contact with the brake pedal and possibly the steering wheel.

Also, the “thrown clear” claim is another myth, statistically. A driver (or passenger) is only helped by *not* wearing belts in one out of 10,000 serious accidents. So not wearing seatbelts is like playing Russian Roulette with a pistol that has one empty chamber out of 10,000.

I realize this does not speak to whether this was a good shoot… but seatbelted drivers are safer themselves and make travel safer for everyone in cases like in the first paragraph. Their passengers are safer in those cases, too.

I do not trust the police being armed with a camera. There should be cameras around the city and areas where police presence is necessary and normal in certain particular places.. If the police who are killing folks control the video cams what will that result in. No put them on the streets and let the city control them and not the police departments, a separate entity who is not in bed with the police force.

“If the police who are killing folks control the video cams what will that result in.”

You should be in favor of the body cams. In police departments that are using the body cams, things have worked out well because the officers realize that their actions are being recorded and reviewed. They have brought huge drops in violence during arrests.

The Police Force in America for people of color ( particularly males of color) has taken the place of the folks who wore the White Hoods and called themselves the Klan, and black people have long been experiencing state sponsored terrorism by racists individuals who hide behind a badge of bigotry. A White police officer from California says that a fraternal order exists within the police force that sets itself as an agent for killing off people of color. If ISIS started targeting white males or white policemen America citizens would have a better understanding of what it means to be targeted and killed because of your color. In America it is simply a crime to be Black Man.

And why we are abroad calling people Barbaric and inhumane we have somehow dismissed all the horrific lynchings that left the bodies of hundreds of thousands of innocent men hanging from trees to rot as a reminder to instill terror and fear in the minds of other enslaved people, or slaves who had their feet chopped off for running away from captivity, or men beaten with lashes until their skill almost fell from the bones, mutilated. And now we want to call Muslims barbaric and terrorists. And the law and the courts endorsed and upheld these Barbaric acts of brutality the same way they have upheld the countless policemen and courts terrorizing blacks now in a new form and fashion— killing them outright. Oh we have an unusual way of looking at justice blindly in America. How can you expect to administer justice abroad as and advocate when you are not just in your own backyard. But ISIS got something for the West.

Now explain to me how in the World are individuals from the West now joining the Jihadists and aligning themselves with ISIS? Saw that on the news the other day. Now who are these people? This will be an interesting analysis. And one that will not be easily understood by the linear thinking Western mind. There are some individuals who cannot be bought or sold and they are not loyal to American ideals.

And this is a response to the young man being a college graduate. If the black young man came from mainstream and was a college graduate, then the police would have pat him on the head (WITH NO CITATION), and told him to tell his father I will see him on the course tomorrow. That is what a college degree does for a white boy when he is stopped by the police. But you sir have sited the real issue. It does not matter if a black man goes to Harvard or Princeton, there are people who still view blacks wrongly from their own historical twisted perspective . Blacks were considered chattel at the slave auctions, not human beings who had been torn and kidnapped from their families, just mere animals and property. And this mindset has prevailed by a sizable number of individuals who feared that the truth would someday prevail— which is that black people are human beings and not animals. But there are people and systems who would still deem this lie regarding our humanity. And this has been transferred and enhanced in circles and systems perpetuated by those who fear the truth. Quite the contrary truth is this, the real beasts were the inhumane men who treated other men like animals.

And there are people who jump to the conclusion that every time a person of color dies in a police shooting… if the officer is white… it was because that officer views “blacks wrongly.” This sort of thinking is just as invalid and wrong and hateful and causes just as much friction between races as what you brought up. I will fight white racism when I encounter it if you will fight racism on your side when you encounter it.

I have a SC Concealed Carry Permit due to all the crime in the neighborhood. I no longer carry outside my house due to extreme fear from the police if I get pulled over, or if an officer sees the “print” under my tee shirt. It’s pretty sad that you fear the police more than criminals. I would rather take chances with being robbed than go to prison for defending myself against an “honor student”, or shot by the police for exercising my right to self defense. Think twice before you carry!

If your thought processes REALLY work this way, yeah, you’re probably better off not carrying.

If you get pulled over and you tell the officer that you have a permit and are carrying (immediately, as you learned when you got your CCP), you have no reason to fear. If you’re overly concerned about an officer randomly detecting the fact that you are carrying when wearing a t-shirt, you should wear clothing that doesn’t show the presence of your weapon. You paid the money and took the class, you should be willing and able to carry. You could save your life and/or the lives of others in a bad situation. Your fears are unjustified.

You are everthing that is detestible about gun owners – espicially the Republican ones. I really like the liberal gun owners because I feel they are more educated and less likely to use guns in the heat of the moment if. I am afraid of the redneck in the pick-up with the shotgun and perhaps the bulit bans should apply to him. I was at the Brass Monkey one night for a beer and a looney man was opening and closing his jacket over and over to show his gun off. I think this guy was high or drunk but he was not looking in my direction thank god! Perhaps we should put metal detectors at all bars to keep us safe. Thanks

None of us know the facts of this case; however, I do know from previous exposure to him, that Lance Corporal C.M. Groubert is a gungho, hothead who abuses his power. I have a feeling that the outcome of this investigation will corroborate this.
