Dear Editor;

You asked for this information, so I went out and got it.  Here is what I’ve found in a brief search of verifiable sources.  I’ve skipped the whole Facebook as a source thing.  As you know Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer on August 9, 2014.  In the time since then, two police officers have been shot and killed in the line of duty:  Chief Michael Pimental of the Elmendorf, Texas police department and Daryl Pierson of the Rochester, NY police department.

Chief Pimental was shot and killed by a Hispanic male and Ptl. Pierson was shot and killed by a black male.  Both police officers were white.  Attorney General Eric Holder made no moves to conduct an investigation into the immigration status of the man who shot and killed Chief Pimental and made no move to impose a consent decree against the New York Department of Corrections since the black man who shot and killed Ptl. Pierson was on parole/probation.  Those numbers do not include a Puerto Rican police officer shot and killed during a narcotics investigation (Hispanic male killed by a Hispanic male), or a sheriff’s deputy (white) who was struck and killed by a car driven by a white male fleeing arrest.

During 2012 (most recent statistics available from the FBI) there were 48 police officers killed in the line of duty.  Of those 48 officers, 42 were white and 6 were black.  Of the 51 offenders identified in connection with the 48 killings of police officers, 30 were white and 16 were black.

So it appears that folks of every color are killing each other.  I don’t recall seeing riots, protests or Department of Justice investigations when police officers are killed in the line of duty.  No one is holding entire communities responsible for the actions of one suspect when that suspect has killed a police officer.  But, if a police officer kills a suspect, then there are riots and questions about the skin color of the suspect and officer.  Are there as many questions asked if a black police officer kills a white suspect?  What about a white police officer who kills a white suspect?  Or a black police officer killing a black suspect?

The time of making assumptions based on skin color is long gone.  Lets make assumptions based on actions, behaviors and character.  There are bad cops.  Just as there are bad lawyers, doctors, accountants and assembly line workers.  Studies have shown that there are fewer bad cops than there are bad actors in other professions.  A 22-year study by Arizona State University showed that of all the officers terminated by the New York City Police Department, less than 5 percent were terminated for Abuse of Force.  More officers were terminated for administrative violations and drug use than for brutality.

Please think about these numbers when you cover these issues in the future.

Sincerely,

“A Cop”

It sounds like this police officer thinks we should be holding law enforcement agencies to the same standard we hold (alleged) criminals?

So it appears that folks of every color are killing each other. I don’t recall seeing riots, protests or Department of Justice investigations when police officers are killed in the line of duty.

People don’t riot because they’re sad someone died. Riots tend to happen when a people feel the need to rebel against another group of people or an authority they perceive as oppressive or unjust, or feel otherwise threatened by. This is the case when it comes to lynchings and race riots, riots against government, riots against public/private establishments, riots against police, etc.

It isn’t just that a black kid got shot in Ferguson, it is that the black community there already showed distrust with the local law enforcement before this happened and became incensed at not only an unarmed black kid being shot, but at the initial witness testimonies that were heard and the initial responses that the police gave to the public.

Not to condone the cop’s actions, mind you. Cops seem to cop a huge attitude when they put on the uniform and tote a gun. Best to stay out of the way.

Reply

It isn’t the cop’s attitude, but rather the fact that you don’t like being told you are doing something wrong and being forced to face the consequences of your actions.

Nah, sometimes it’s just the attitude. Cops deal with the assholes of society much of their day, so naturally they become such as well.

How do you know, ever been a cop. I bet you have had prior run-in’s, been arrested before or had your share of traffic tickets.Funny my 27 years as a police officer,I’ve never had a complaint by a good citizen that came in contact with me professional, but had my share with the mopes on the street who terrorize good people. Spoke to an LACSD officer way back when iI was extraditing a guy. He told me horror stories of the Watts district root back in 1967. Nope the person who spoke about the mob mentality is right on the button. All these people want is something for nothing to lazy to work, easier to stand on a street corner and sell dope. How about rioters in los angles, cables. Watts riot having people direct traffic so thrives could cross the street safely. Never been in a riot other than in my dept. county jail, but spent a lot of time working in the projects of Gary, In. Once known as the murder capital of the USA. Like to knock cops fine, don’t call for one when you need one.

“He wasn’t a black “kid”. ”
Michael Brown was 18 years old and Trayvon Martin was 17 years old – both kids in my book. Being black is not a “huge threat” – no matter how many times YOU think it is. What was Trayvon Martin doing that was threatening? Last time I checked a bag of skittles does not scare most folks.

truthmonger September 6, 2014 at 1:42 pm

BOTH Treydead and “Baby Huey” Brown were considerably larger than their victims and capable of inflicting great bodily injury or death with bare hands. Both tried.

Do you think that War Machine should have his charges reduced to simple assault just because he was “unarmed” when he beat both Christie Mack and her new boyfriend? Disparity in physical size and strength are justifications for use of higher levels of force, up to and including deadly force. It isn’t about making an incident some kind of “fair fight” between cops and criminals, but rather about bringing a situation under control as rapidly as possible with as little injury as possible. People are most likely to get hurt when the criminal believes he has a chance to get away.

Blues, try applying your logic in the Brown case to the War Machine/ Christie Mack case, and imagine she shot him when he beat her. See if you can still come to the same conclusion.

Wow… so I guess Trayvon told Zimmerman to exit his vehicle? Had he stayed in his car as he was instructed by the dispatcher, none of this would’ve happened. He thought that he was going to scare the kid and ended up biting off more than he could chew. He should have been convicted of manslaughter and behind bars right now.

I disagree.

If they rebel against another group or authority why does the destruction and looting always take place in the rioters backyard? Riots happen because opportunist take advantage of a situation and a mob mentality takes over.

Not distrust, but rather a desire for revenge against the police for DARING to interfere in their “bidness” by enforcing the law. This is the new norm across the nation…. not restricted to any particular race, but rather a behavior created by a weak society who no longer accepts the idea that actions have consequences. Criminals now freely file false complaints against officers as revenge for getting arrested. Media loves to sensationalize a story, and everyone loves the whole rebellion mythos. Even after the officer is exonerated, no consequences are attached to the person who lied. It’s simply societal sociopathy.

It’s obvious the officers killed were armed, and the people they were approaching, in whatever manner, were probably armed, given that the officers died.
The victim in the Ferguson shooting was unarmed and walking down the middle of the street. Don’t know what else transpired, but the very onset of these incidents, the power of the police in the Ferguson was clearly, overwhelmingly in the police’s favor.
There’s that.

Its not for the cops to question the laws, only enforce them. Laws are passed by the people’s representatives and should be enforced. If its a bad law it should be rectified by hounding the people’s representatives into changing that law not by selective enforcement. Selective enforcement is a second cousin to anarchy and tyranny.

Seems to me that if the alleged suspect was on the side of the road or moved to the side of the when asked a lot of pain and suffering could have been avoided. Sorry that some of the police died in the line of duty but that’s a risk they take when on duty. I’m wondering what is the number of arrest that no one died during the same time frame ?

Thomas September 6, 2014 at 3:34 am

In 1976 a new TV show made it’s debut on ABC. S.W.A.T. was a show about a new concept in policing to catch bad guys while protecting citizens. Special Weapons And Tactics episodes revealed a specially armed and trained police team was called into action for such scenarios as snipers shooting at citizens, chasing escaped prisoners, and rescuing hostages. These paramilitary police units made their debut as early as 1969 Los Angeles to handle such real life scenarios mentioned above. Major cities got into the act forming their own units. The relative infrequency of SWAT call-outs meant that the specially trained and equipped officers were usually assigned to regular police duties, but were available for SWAT calls at a moments notice.

According to Radley Balko’s, “Rise of the Warrior Cop” in 1984, 26% of towns with populations of 30,000 people had their SWAT teams. By 2005, 80% of these population centers had their own SWAT units. According to Professor Pete Kraska of Eastern Kentucky University’s School of Justice Studies, SWAT units were called out 3000 times around the US in 1980. Today, these call-outs swelled to around 50,000 each year. With violent crimes decreasing, why so many SWAT call-outs?

The ACLU estimates 80% of SWAT raids are conducted to execute search warrants often looking for drugs despite citizen’s lessening support in the so-called “War on Drugs”. These raids often end up as botched with innocent people killed and terrorized in their own homes. These “no-knock” raids christened by Supreme Court rulings embracing only a “a reasonable suspicion” that by knocking first folks would flush drug evidence down the toilet.

Don’t call the cops when some random thug rapes your daughter at gunpoint. Wouldn’t want them to have to use a SWAT team to go in and get him after they use all that “paramilitary” organization to figure out who he is (most likely using equipment paid for out of drug grants because the citizens wanted a new water park instead of a funded police department). Wouldn’t want the rapist to get hurt or be offended.

Reply
Sure September 6, 2014 at 5:45 pm

It’s pretty much a waste of time to call cops in most cases of crime as they rarely are on the scene while it’s committed and the investigation rarely ends up with a conviction.

Since you bring up the topic of rape, it’s interesting to know the conviction rate of those caught is only around 11%, and even then only around 6%.

https://rainn.org/news-room/97-of-every-100-rapists-receive-no-punishment

Cops are useful when you need a report for insurance purposes and what not, but the fact is that 99% of their time is spent generating revenue via traffic tickets and most don’t ever use their gun in their career because they never bump into bad guys outside traffic stops.

truthmonger September 7, 2014 at 2:31 am

Since you like stats, read the article. 60% go unreported. How do they arrive at this number? A guess? They also fail to list how many cases have victims who refuse to cooperate. Or how many were unfounded. No real facts in the article at all- just guesswork. It also doesn’t tell how many cases have suspects identified and the prosecutor declines to go forward.

Sure September 7, 2014 at 8:18 am

Oh, I read the report, you’re just failing to understand it and the stats.

truthmonger September 6, 2014 at 2:07 pm

Back in the ’70s, most drug dealers carried cheap revolvers. Today? AK’s, SKS, AR’s, as well as high – capacity pistols are the norm. It is NOT the job of cops to ensure a “fair fight” or give criminals an advantage simply to make Thomas feel warm and fuzzy. Don’t want drug laws enforced? Elect people who will repeal them. Don’t want cops with rifles? Don’t call them to incidents were they will need them.

BTW, back in the ’30s-’60s, it wasn’t unusual for police to have Thompson submachine guns.
