How do you fight an enemy that blends in to the population?
That was an issue in Vietnam.
How do you possibly “win” in a religion driven conflict more than 1,000 years old?
The Sunni-Shia Divide

What strategy do you use among varied sectarian society in the same geographic area, where the value systems of those sectarian cultures are at odds with our value system and Constitution?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sectarianism
“The ideological underpinnings of attitudes and behaviours labelled as sectarian are extraordinarily varied. Members of a religious or political group may believe that their own salvation, or the success of their particular objectives, requires aggressively seeking converts from other groups; adherents of a given faction may believe that for the achievement of their own political or religious project their internal opponents must be converted or purged.”
George Bush has that answer for ya !
The troops President Bush had in Iraq at least held the country together. With the weakness of Obummer the lives of our service men and women have been wasted. The same enemy , under another name , is taking over. Since things are as they have become let them fight it out. The more of each other they kill the better. We can clean up the mess later.
The lives of our service people were wasted when your hero ,on no basis whatsoever, invaded another country.
Explain to us all the difference between what Bush did and what his old “soul” buddy Putin is doing in Ukraine.
You Republicans are really something.
Putin didn’t lie about WMDs, or out a KGB agent.
While he’s at it why doesn’t he list all the nations in this hemisphere alone that the US has invaded. And how many times each?
“The troops President Bush had in Iraq at least held the country together.”
Held the country together? Are you kidding me?
“We can clean up the mess later.”
Shit!
I agree with a lot of what you said, but would like to make a few points.
1. South Korea may have ended in an Armistice and little territory ultimately changed at a huge human cost, but South Korea was preserved. It eventually became after a period of military rule one of our strongest, most prosperous, democratic and most loyal allies. It is one of the only places in the world where you will see large pro-American protests.
It is difficult to predict the impact of the preservation of S. Korea, but I believe the stark differences between North and South Korea has influenced the future paths of many nations to our advantage. Militarily the Korean War was a stalemate, but politically and diplomatically it was a victory.
2. We should help Ukraine without risking our military involvement with ours and allied aid and sanctions. We should strengthen our relationship with NATO. Enlarge NATO into the former Yugoslavia only if their democratic, judicial, and free market institutions are strong and they can contribute militarily. Reverse Obama’s decision not to base short range missiles in eastern Europe.
3. ISIS is committed to our destruction. They also committed to the destruction of many others. If we can support those others and limit our involvement, that would be best, but this could be a long process. Even if they lose all their territory, they could turn into a purely terrorist organization that we would still have to deal with.
” Google a night time satellite view of the Korean peninsula and you see the difference in their prosperity. ”
Like the difference between night and day.
