It’s a compromise with Republicans who say he’s not “doing enough” and think that diplomacy is a pointless exercise.

I do love that plane – the B1B aka “The Bone”, repurposed during its lifetime from a high altitude supersonic penetration bomber (insert penis joke here) to a low altitude NOE bomber to it’s current role as a general purpose delivery truck for conventional munitions. It was designed before “stealth” was the “end all be all of airplane styling” but it still has a radar cross section smaller than a ‘Nam era F4 Phantom II and can fly well over Mach 1 clean.
What’s so great about it? The Bone can deliver almost every form of aerial munitions we have, from dumb to ultra smart. It can deliver the weapons reliably (these days anyway) in a hurry and on target. Why’s that important – because it says to every enemy we have “piss us off and we can hurt you – badly”.
The rub in all that? We have to have the will to do it. Making bug splats out of terrorists accomplishes nothing unless you kill every last one of them. Damn the collateral damage, full speed ahead and kill them all or kill the head of the snake. If you only kill the head, you’ll be back at it in a while but you’ll have some peace and quiet for a while.
Plinking trucks is a half measure.
Half measures bring disastrous results.

The “Bone” was relegated to the Georgia Air Guard about 10-15 years or so back and even they didn’t want the expense to keep it flying and the active USAF took it back.
B-1 developement was terminated during the Carter years in favor of cruise missles and the F-117 (which was top secret at the time) but resurrected during “my balls are bigger than yours and lets throw in the USS New Jersey while we’re at it” Reagan.
Yeah, its a nice looking plane and has a good payload & fast as hell but a bitch to maintain and is not even nuclear capable.
You can make the rocks bounce a little higher if that is what gets you off but for this mission A-10’s will do the job better.
For what it’s worth a few squadrons of A-26’s, A-1’s and B-25’s (complete with eight forward firing .50 cals and a 75mm cannon) would be a better application for plinking trucks and smoking Haji in the referenced AOR (IF you could wave a magic wand and they magically appeared on the ramp at Balad that is……)
I’ve said that all along when i was in the “Stan”. Only fly in the ointment might be high altitude performance in the mountains in the “Stan” (but I don’t think that is a factor in the plains of western Iraq or eastern Syria).
Then again, there is the mighty AC-130 Hercules!!!!!

A-10s and AC-130s are an infantryman’s best friend. The AirFarce hates them both because they’re not sexy.
