MORE CHAOS, MORE RATINGS, MORE REVENUE …

By John Osborne  || osborne If you want an example of how the media can inflame tensions, look no further than Ferguson, Missouri.

In Ferguson, the protestors themselves are trying to use this event as a way to instill fear in the minds of the police officers.  With a hapless set of twenty-something reporters following any bystander willing to talk, the rabble have been emboldened.  Unfortunately, this scenario happens far more than it should in the Middle East.  Jihadists blow themselves up in a market, because the one thing they know is that people respond to fear.  This isn’t a new strategy; American citizens just haven’t used it – at least not often.  It’s honestly brilliant.  However, to neglect pointing out that the very people covering the story are also antagonists stirring the pot strikes me as wrong.

Countless times, we’ve seen articles claiming – or implying – that “the actions of the protestors are right, the actions of the police are wrong.”

This kind of situation is what makes ratings skyrocket – and a reporter’s worth grow almost overnight – but they won’t be the ones to correct the damage. The reporters will leave and the city will be rebuilt, but not by them.

For the first time in many people’s memory in America, members of the New Black Panthers Party are being hailed as “heroes” by the reporters, seemingly helping to minimize violence, all while chanting for the death of the police officer involved in the August 9 shooting of Michael Brown.

Which unfortunately, goes mostly unreported …

We’ve constantly heard about Ferguson reporters Ryan J. Reilly and Wesley Lowery being arrested for seemingly innocent behavior, but this is the role of today’s activist journalists.  Professional activists now stir the pot, buying ink by the barrel.  Unlike James Risen who is fighting for his life, protecting his source.

The new world of journalism is deciding what is newsworthy, by what damage they can produce.

Speaking of damage, when I was 21 years old, a SWAT team in Independence, Missouri took me down.  A young man had murdered his father, and I fit the description. The helicopters spent the night encircling my apartment, the lights ever present outside my windows … but this made me feel safer.  I didn’t ask for badge numbers, or fight the man, because unknowingly, I had crossed a line;

I produced an ID and went on with my life.  Having six M4’s pointed at my head didn’t even phase me.

My situation is different, I’ll agree. However, it doesn’t change the fact when the camera’s are on, it gives people who otherwise are in the shadows a chance to do something that will make them famous.

If we look at the first night of the curfew for instance, people were shouting to the media – “They got guns, we got guns!”

This created a situation for a police force that had been dogged by political reporters, activists and others, for days.  They had no choice but to act with controlled violence. In fact if you had watched the VICE News live stream, you would have heard bullets flying from the direction of the protestors.

This is counter to the narrative the media has adopted, as reporters have moaned incessantly about the ‘over-militarization’ of the police, and the misuse of force.

I’d ask you this, though: Just what are the police officers supposed to do?  And beyond that – what are they really able to do?

To the reporters, the answer is “nothing.”

If they fire CS gas (which every soldier has had to experience), they are damaging a population.  If they fire smoke, they are making a move for an ‘unprovoked’ action.  If they move at an armed group, they are showing more aggression than would appear to be necessary.

The over-dramatization of the situation has tied the officers’ hands – resulting in a reticence to engage that endangers lives and property.

This situation isn’t about what equipment the police use; it’s about the fact: when the media finds a great candidate for an unjust action, they exploit, corrupt the situation, and don’t move on until the next crisis.

Meanwhile, when the media leaves, the truth is more elusive than it was before they came.

In the end, the blame rests with the residents and their crappy world, not the media presence. Law-abiding people with moral and ethic codes are not swayed by external influences such as the media. Case in point, come to my neighborhood and see how little concern and violence will result from the inclusion of several talking heads. Anyway, my solution for the “Ferguson’s” of this country is simple, divest all police from their midst (since they don’t want them anyway) and let them go at it. As such, they’ll either step up and learn how to deal with their own messes, or, they’ll go down in flames. Either way, the country will be better off. Simply, I’ve never been more cynical of this country’s future.

My guess is that the NY Times link I used depicting Richland Counties haul of 1033 military grade weapons, vehicles, etc., does includes SLED since SLED’s HQs is in Richland County. Official documents from the Department of Defense shows only how much each county requested, not how each county disbursed the materials received.

hmmmm — interesting..

Mike at the Beach August 18, 2014 at 1:32 am

Keep in mind, too, that requests for equipment through the 1033 program and the actual disbursement are usually worlds apart- agencies are told to request many times what they actually need in order to get the basic amount of gear desired.

It’s hard to ask for someone’s ID when they are punching you in the face and then bullrushing you. Interesting that none of the shots are in the back, like some of these “key” witnesses had claimed.

The Posse Comitatus Act was passed to restrict the powers of the Federal government from enforcing Federal laws in the state of SC. The great thinkers of our generation decided that law was old fashioned and came up with a run around the law. Arm county police departments with free Federal military grade vehicles, aircraft, weapons, body armor and let them enforce Federal laws in their own states! Is there anyone here really think all those practically free military grade toys will not be used to enforce Federal laws in South Carolina?

If you want to soak up excess military defense contract supplies, how about reactivating a few divisions and deploy them on the Southern Front?

The Defense Department should recall A-L-L military grade supplies and vehicles from A-L-L counties that received them since 1033 Program came into existence!

The cops didn’t want to release how many times Michael Brown was shot, either. At least, not until the toxicology report came in. They’re probably hoping, praying the toxicology comes back with something, even if it’s just marijuana, because according to a second autopsy, he was shot “at least six times.”

Not that it’s going to matter much to overly emotional liberals, but the autopsy shows entry wounds ONLY on the front of Mike Brown. The story about him running away and being shot in the back is complete nonsense.

Reply
Original Good Old Boy August 18, 2014 at 1:17 pm

If he was never shot in the back (per the autopsy) how was he hit before turning around?

Reply

his right arm was hit in the side – that corresponds with eye witnesses that saw him flinch when he was running away before stopping.

Devil's Advocate August 18, 2014 at 10:02 am

What if, just what if, the conflicting eyewitness account is true and Mike Brown “just wouldn’t stop coming at the cop”? The guy was 6’4″ 300 lbs.

Original Good Old Boy August 18, 2014 at 4:35 pm

euwe max August 18, 2014 at 7:25 pm

leaving open the very distinct possiblity that the cop was justfied in using lethal force?

———
let’s hear your legal defense of shooting an unarmed kid as “a threat to serious bodily harm” in such a way as not to apply to every difficult suspect, not already in custody.

Original Good Old Boy August 19, 2014 at 1:44 pm

Not sure I’m following you. According to the cop’s story (which has allegedly been corroborated by many witnesses who don’t want to go to the media over fear of reprisal), there was a struggle for the cop’s pistol, they became disentangled and Mike started to run, and then the cop yelled for Mike Brown to stop. Brown then turned and charged at him. He’s 6’4″ 300 pounds and, judging by the cop’s photo, outweighs the cop by 100 pounds. If you have already been in a struggle for your weapon, and some dude who outweighs you by 100 pounds is now turning to bull-rush you, it would be suicidal NOT to use your firearm to neutralize the threat.
Again, if this is the version that really happened, would you still say the shooting was unjustified?

euwe max August 19, 2014 at 5:33 pm

As you might have guessed by now, I’m heavily invested in the prevention of a police state by degrees.

I would like to know how an officer who is allowed to use deadly force against “the threat” of mere physical force, would not lead to massive abuse of power by our city’s finest.

Once the precedent is set to kill a person who does not possess deadly force at the discretion of the officer, I don’t see how an officer can be accused of abuse of that power.

euwe max August 18, 2014 at 1:52 pm

Well… to a white man, anyway.

Original Good Old Boy August 18, 2014 at 2:07 pm

No, to anyone using their common sense.
Sure, it’s possible that this guy was gunned down for no reason. But given the timing of the shooting (moments after Brown committed a violent crime), the swollen face of the cop, and the fact that he was shot in the front, it all tends to corroborate the cop’s story. It’s very possible the cop fired too many rounds and got caught in the heat of the moment. But I think it’s evil-whitey fairy-tale land to assume that this cop just gunned him down for no reason.

euwe max August 18, 2014 at 3:31 pm

Sure, it’s possible that this guy was gunned down for no reason.

——–
no reason?

The cop was PISSED! That’s the *reason*

euwe max August 18, 2014 at 1:49 pm

What if, just what if, the cop hadn’t had his gun out? He’d have to subdue the suspect just like cops do 24/7/365, without shooting him in the face first.

This guy was incopetent (sp) – he didn’t carry a throw down with him for these kinds of things.

Reply
Original Good Old Boy August 18, 2014 at 1:16 pm

Six times in the front, which is consistent with the officer’s story. It’s inconsistent with the story from two ‘key’ witnesses, so that’s an unformfortable issue that the agitaters will have to deal with.

Conflicting eyewitness accounts are coming out now. Sure he was unarmed, but sounds like he could have possibly been the aggressor. What are you gonna do if a 6’4″ 300 lb angry guy is coming towards you and you cannot reach around to get your taser out in time?

Standard drill is two to the center of mass and one shot to the head until the threat is neutralized. Threat was not neutralized on the first volley so wash, rinse repeat. Two volleys of stopped the threat so the officer stopped shooting. If the attacker had been running away the bullet holes would have been in his back not his front.

Reply
Original Good Old Boy August 18, 2014 at 1:20 pm

That’s actually accepted protocol. Shoot until the danger is neutralized. Unless you are hit in the head or spine or another “immobilizing” spot, someone’s adrenaline can keep them coming even after being shot several times.

Reply
Original Good Old Boy August 18, 2014 at 1:15 pm

They released the photo in the store because it had been requested under a freedom of information requestion (that’s my understanding) but they probably also released it for PR reasons, as a way to say: “There’s more to this story, and your ‘martyr’ may not be the gentle giant that some claim.” It’s also relevant because it shows that the confrontation occurred just moments after, when Brown knew he had committed a felony and knew the cops would be looking for him.
Why did they hold off releasing his name? Probably to give him and his family an opportunity to avoid a lynching by those who wanted to string him up without giving him due process. Most of those people don’t want justice; they want blodd.
