MORE THAN BUMPER STICKER BLUES …

A reader forwarded us this bumper sticker … a seven-word commentary on the 2010 South Carolina gubernatorial election, in which then-Tea Party favorite Nikki Haley nearly coughed up a commanding lead to Democratic nominee Vincent Sheheen.

Haley wound up winning by roughly 4 percent of the vote … bailed out by straight ticket voters in a GOP “wave” election.

After a disastrous first-term in office (even on the economy she loves to play pretend with), Haley is locked in another battle with Sheheen.  And the battle gets increasingly dicey for the incumbent “Republican” thanks to the presence of two non-establishment candidates – self-styled “independent Republican” Tom Ervin and Libertarian nominee Steve French.

Sheheen has run a terrible campaign – offering status quo ideas that differ only at the margins from the status quo ideas offered by Haley.  Moreover, the massive Medicaid expansion that Haley has presided over – socialized medicine growth that exceeds Medicaid expansion in Obamacare states – apparently isn’t enough for Sheheen.

He wants to add the Obamacare expansion on top of the massive growth Haley has supported …

Oh, and neither candidate has offered anything resembling real tax relief – or a plan to slow the growth of state government that’s contributing so mightily to our chronic backwardness.

So yeah … as much as “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted For Sheheen” is a catchy bumper sticker, it’s not an accurate representation of reality.  Because the reality is Haley and Sheheen really aren’t as far apart on most of the big-ticket issues as you might imagine.

Accordingly, we’re encouraging our readers to look at the candidacies of Ervin and French – both of whom have embraced parental choice, income tax relief and other reforms we support. Unless of course the current trajectory of the Palmetto State is something you’d like to see continue …

And failed moraless politicians like Haley and Sanford….yeah they are in office but ask Sanford how it going with Jenny’s trial lawyers…he is used to sleeping on the couch and will soon be again when Jenny is done with him.

Sandi Morals August 14, 2014 at 11:36 pm

Damn. Apparently “traitor” Tommy Ervin-Williams has spent 3.5 MILLION of “mommy’s” money for 2% of the vote so he don’t have to sleep on the “couch”. We all have our own personal failings.I trust Sanford and Haley. Never trust a Democrat in 2014.

Arnold H. August 15, 2014 at 7:33 am

Trust Haley and Sanford? Really ….then you are indeed a fool blinded by party loyalty. I have watched you post here for some time and its obvious you are extremely worried that Tom Ervin will take significant votes from Haley. That is a given people in the upstate see Haley for what she is and that is a self serving puppet for out if state money coffers who she believes in her mind will lead her to a high office. Her failures alone are enough to give one pause before casting a vote for her this fall. But here is the biggest thing of all ….Haley lies like all politicians but the difference is she is not good at it.

Vote Haley out August 14, 2014 at 8:23 pm

You going to be surprised by those words, you think Queen Haley is a shoe in better talk to your neighbors.

My standing offer is the first round at Kwagas out in the north east as soon as they call the race if I’m wrong.
Graham wins, Hutto splits the Democratic/independent vote with T-Rav.
Toss up between Haley and the empty suit named Sheheen with Ervin/Fre

I love Tom – he’s the fullback paving the way for Vinny. Go Tom. If I had an extra million I’d donate it to him.

LMAO! ‘Traitor’ Tommy apparently spending MILLIONS of the old lady’s stash for 2% of the vote.
Thru June he had collected a whopping $62,000 from donors.

Wonder if that was from Kathryn or Sheheen? :-)

Who cares – as long as he takes votes away from the Nikster – worst Governor in SC history, and possibly the entire nation. Unless you’re a Russian hacker – then she’s great. Unleass you’re a dock worker in Savannah – then she’s wonderful. Unless you’re a child molester looking for some foster kids – then she’s all that and a bag of curry chips.

…which makes me lean a little more towards voting Sheheen.

I suppose any of the three would better manage the state overall than Haley has, but that’s not saying much. Vote for whoever, hope for a runoff, vote against Haley in the runoff.

“…Sheheen has run a terrible campaign – offering status quo ideas…”
What would you expect from a “status quo”, empty suit, Democrat? French and Ervin between them won’t poll 10% The “alternative voters” will vote for one of them to the detriment of Sheheen.

No remorse here. I will vote for her again. The only problem that i have with her is the upkeep of the roads.

Reply
GrandTango August 15, 2014 at 9:27 am

I have not noticed ONE deficiency in roads. Are you sure you have a problem w/ roads – other than increased traffic? Or, are you reacting to media reports, and lobbyists claims?

Not disagreeing w/ you, but I’d really like you to define the “roads” problem?

In regards to growing the economy backwards, from year 2000-1010, SC government employees, public workers, grew 6.5%. Folks, SC’s healthcare promises for full time employees and a life time pension is a ponzi scheme. They must add X amount of public employees every year to, in their criminal minds, contribute into these two money losing benefits. On top of growing public workers by @25% since 2000 (320,000-400,000) and shifting money out of other department budgets (DSS, Corrections, Mental Health, DOT) to pay for the burgeoning costs to keep their healthcare and pension ponzi afloat, they raise our taxes in the form of county penny sales tax increases. More tax increases are on the way. The Ponzi needs more cash!

Got to love the huge sign near downtown Lexington that says Haley-one and done. If she wins, it won’t be because Lexington voted for her.
