HUNDREDS ATTEND “BACK TO SCHOOL BASH”
Last month we did a brief on S.C. Rep. Kirkman Finlay‘s efforts to show some love to needy families in the Midlands region of South Carolina.
Working with Richland County, S.C. councilman Damon Jeter and sponsors like Staples, AmerisBank and the South Carolina Forestry Foundation, Finlay’s non-profit scholarship foundation put on a hugely successful event last week (August 3, 2014) aimed at equipping low income families with back-to-school supplies.
Finlay’s group – named in honor of his father, former Columbia, S.C. mayor Kirkman Finley, Jr. – distributed more than 350 fully-packed book bags to children. The food truck from Finlay’s restaurant – Pawleys Front Porch – also served up more than 400 hot dog dinners to attendees.
Good for him … and all those who participated.
Lots of politicians talk about helping those in need via taxpayer-funded bureaucracies, but at the end of the day those efforts are invariably about power and patronage. Don’t believe us? Look at the results.
It’s nice to see a few politicians saying “enough is enough” and doing their part to help those in need directly … out of their own pockets and the pockets of like-minded individuals in the private sector.

I see an apple bottom.
Kirkman’s Back to School (Get Yo Free $h*t!) Bash. At least he’s not buying the “Entitlement” vote with taxpayer money!
Would be interesting to see if he paid his restaurant for their meals…
Even if he did, good for him…he’s feeding the needy.
Agreed as long as the costs were reasonable. However there is always the chance that each of these hot dog dinners could cost $50 each paid by the foundation back to his business.
I can’t really figure Finley.
A bit of privileged Dubya with the silver-spoon arrogant “us” viewpoint, a big bit of successful honest businessman and farmer, one accusation of untoward business conniving (Cedar Terrace contamination site), and a fair bit of seeming common sense and decency.
Some people run their mouths about Kirkman and resent his success (and good fortune), but its hard to negative about good old fashioned charity.
Kirk: to hell with city of cola, you should run for governor. Give ’em hell.
He sure didn’t give a damn about city employees when he was on council -he spent most of his time there trying to run them onto public assistance. He’s just looking for votes.
Half the city bureaucracy are idiots and useless as tits on a hog.
I sees dey gots free stuff over there. Less go axe them if dey gots any free stuffs for us.
I hope dees here pants don’t make by big ol blappy butt look to small.
Finley probably realizes that no sane black person would vote for a Republican in general–they know who hates them–but they might consider a specific Republican they liked. Smart move if so. But all this may just be a decent thing to do. It can happen, you know.
First Steps is supposed to do this but they don’t care about poor kids.
‘Needy” ? or “too goddamn lazy to get up in the morning and work” ?
Great topic, great story, and great attitude on your part, Fits ! Finley is a descendant of Governor Wade Hampton with tons of money. His family used to be Democrat.
Only in America are the “poor” people fat.
