A lesbian friend made a very good point years ago when she asked if anyone really believed that she would actually choose to be shunned by friends, family, co-workers, and others and deal with all the shit she received, because of her orientation. They don’t choose this, it is who they are and what they are born with.

Jackie (presuming you are straight), if you woke up tomorrow and the new “normal” was that we are all gay, could you stop liking women and want a man because it was the norm? I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t. I don’t care how much preaching, discrimination, or whatever else, society dished out, I could not quit liking women and be attracted to men.
Imagine if you were born with whatever it is that causes one to be wired to like their own sex instead of the opposite. Do you really believe it is as simple as choosing one over the other?
It is not as simple as preferring one color of car over another, one brand of outerwear over another, or similar.
I don’t really have time to address your post in depth right now, but my underlying point is you, and Mary and Myrtle Martha seem to have a naive belief that nobody would ever choose to do something unpopular, dangerous, anti-social, etc. People choose to do dangerous, taboo, unpopular stuff all the time- doesn’t mean they were born that way.
But that so called aberrant behavior (Goth etc) could be oppositional defiance of the teen years, or in some cases could also have its roots in genetics or a chemical brain dysfunction too…. Just a milder form of an Autism or a bipolar disorder or skizophrenia. The latest science says homosexuality appears to be due to some faulty hormonal shutoff sequences of the opposing sex parent’s genetic material during a crucial period of fetal development. So life would be simpler for all concerned if God made more guarantees about birth outcomes.
Kind of like how recent research has shown criminal behavior to be a brain abnormality and, therefore, many criminals may not actually have chosen to commit their crimes?

Government should be limited to the Constitution and govern by it and the limit it sets. Not doing so, is why we have agencies with responsibilites outside what government should do and why budgets are out pacing the growth of the economy and the ability of the taxpayer to fund. The fundamental flaw is that a religious ceremony is not a legal state of marriage. Marriage is a legal contract. It may be accompanied by a religious ceremony but it doesn’t have to be, especially since marriage was a legal contract before any of today’s churches were founded. Marriage pre-dates Christianity as a legal institution.
It was the church which tried to take a legal contract and force it into being a religious one, not the other way around. But the Founders never saw marriage as having to be religious. Marriages were performed by judges right from the start and ministers could act on behalf of the government, but without the legal requirements being filled no religious ceremony made people married.
The churches should have no saw over a legal contract. Giving “marriage” to the churches is like making all labor contracts dependent on trade unions.
I never understood why all parties can’t agree to separate a civil union from marriage…it’s like everyone wants to fight.
Hundreds of benefits, including social security and most pension payments, are legally tied to the term “marriage.” The government, federal and state, could do a find-and-replace change of the word “marriage” with the word “civil union” and then all benefits and privileges and responsibilities would switch to civil unions. But I don’t think that most of the country’s married people would appreciate suddenly losing all those rights. So there would also have to be a change in the paperwork and records for millions of people to designate them “in a civil union” instead of “married.” But of course before that could happen, every state would have to make civil unions legal. All this would be hugely time-consuming and cost enormous amounts of money. It would be a lot simpler and cheaper if churches would just start calling what they do “Holy Matrimony,” instead of insisting on using the same word that civil legal contracts use (“marriage”) and then complaining about the word being the same for both.
Many opponents of “gay marriage” regard a marriage license as merely a “license” to avoid violating anti-fornication laws, rather than as a valid, state-sanctioned contract between two individuals committing them to certain obligations and granting certain rights and benefits.

Government’s role in marriage is merely recognizing people as married and therefore applying laws for married couples to those persons, nothing more. It should perform that duty independent of religious doctrine in order to be fair to all.
