Israel’s invasion of Gaza (a.k.a. “Operation Protective Edge“) has killed more than 337 Palestinian civilians – including 77 children – since it was launched a week-and-half ago.
And the worst could be yet to come …
Israeli leaders have threatened an escalation to the conflict … which was launched in response to the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers last month.
Meanwhile Palestinian militants allied with Hamas have fired more than 1,600 missiles into Israel and sent “suicide donkeys” to target Israeli ground forces.
“They used (donkeys) as a human shield, or an animal shield, if you like,” an Israeli spokesman said. “Anything, an animal or an international building, that can help make use of innocent people or international (citizens), they will use it. We see it time and again.”
Israel’s offensive – subsidized in part by American taxpayers – has drawn international condemnation. Large anti-Israeli protests were held over the weekend in the European capitals of Dublin, London, Paris, Brussels, and Madrid.
Undeterred, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday he had instructed Israeli commanders to “prepare for the possibility of significantly widening the ground operation.”
“We don’t want to kill civilians, but Hamas is a terrorist organization that hides behind human shields,” he said.
U.S. president Barack Obama supports the Israeli action, but says he is “deeply concerned about the risks of further escalation and the loss of more innocent life.”
Obama added he was hopeful Israel would conduct future operations “in a way that minimizes civilian casualties.”
This website supports Israel’s right to defend itself as it sees fit – and wage war in any manner it deems appropriate. We do not, however, support the ongoing subsidization of such efforts by American taxpayers.
UPDATE: As of Sunday afternoon (EDT), the death toll has now climbed over 400.

The Ukrainians are making a strong argument that Stalin’s liquidation of the Kulaks was an earlier and (I believe they claim) larger holocaust, the Original Holocaust so to speak. The Armenians claim their near liquidation by the Turks (1915) similarly is the original Holocaust (capital “H”), though debatably not western. The much earlier Mongols attempt to liquidate the Chinese peasantry may possibly dwarf them all.
There is a lot of Holocaust-guilt peddling and sometimes some sharp words among the main contenders.
I don’t only compare the number of deaths, but also the degree of premeditation, calculation, perverse motives, science/technology, economic resources and sadism involved. The Ukraine tragedy was a forced famine in order to crush an enemy. Their was no huge bureaucracy created for its implementation. They did not enlist the nations best scientists and engineers in the effort. It was not racially or ethnically motivated. Evil? Yes.
Jews were not fighting or defending anything and we’re only targeted because of their religion and ethnicity. The Germans destroy a very productive element of their society and gain only from pretty thievery and forced starvation manual slave labor. No such effort has ever gone on before or since towards the capturing then killing of defenseless prisoners.

I remember the news videos, on American national news, of Palestinian teenagers handcuffed to the hoods of Israeli military jeeps to inhibit attacks on the Israeli soldiers then operating in Palestinian territories (attacks by Molotov cocktails I believe). During the First Intifada probably (I forget). Human shields were OK then for some reason. What has changed?

The best answer this ongoing turmoil is a two state solution where Israel dismantles its illegal settlements permanently, a permanent cease fire is enacted and Jerusalem is proclaimed an “open city” to be shared under a single jurisdiction b/w all faiths and countries (in other words, everyone owns it but nobody owns it).
