Nikki Haley’s Embarrassingly Anemic Vetoes

THIS IS FISCAL CONSERVATISM? S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley issued the final budget vetoes of her first term in office this week … and as far as South Carolina taxpayers are concerned, she saved the worst for last. Haley vetoed a minuscule $18.5 million out of the state’s $25.1 billion budget….

THIS IS FISCAL CONSERVATISM?

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley issued the final budget vetoes of her first term in office this week … and as far as South Carolina taxpayers are concerned, she saved the worst for last.

Haley vetoed a minuscule $18.5 million out of the state’s $25.1 billion budget. For those of you keeping score at home, that’s 0.07 percent of the state’s total spending plan . Assuming you don’t count the $1.5 billion South Carolina doles out on food stamps (and state lawmakers don’t), Haley’s anemic vetoes still add up to less than one tenth of one percent  of the state budget.

Astounding …

That’s not fiscal conservatism, people. That’s rubber-stamping all manner of waste, inefficiency, duplication and unnecessary government.

Sadly, though, it’s what Palmetto taxpayers have come to expect from this governor … although this year she did manage to outdo her own veto anemia.

Last year Haley vetoed barely $100 million out of a $22.7 billion budget (.44 percent). She even went so far as to join “Republicans in Name Only” in the South Carolina Senate in approving a $26 million appropriation for U.S. President Barack Obama’s signature education initiative – an expansion of the state’s failed government-run early childhood education programs.

In 2012 she vetoed $60 million – or one quarter of one percent of a $23 billion budget.

The high water mark for Haley’s veto pen? Her first year in office, when she cut $213 million (.96 percent) from a $22.1 billion spending plan.

Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Steve French – who will be on the general election ballot in November – mocked Haley.

“The great fiscal conservative (Nikki Haley) vetoes $18.5 million of a staggering $25 billion dollar budget,” French tweeted. “What a joke.”

Indeed … unfortunately the joke is on all of us (FITS included) who believed the habitually dishonest Haley would remain true to her 2010 campaign promises about limiting the growth of government.

Did she veto the First Steps reauthorization?

She said the LAC has not seen any productivity out of First Steps in ten years FIrst Steps has not made major changes since the LAC audit and they are not seeing reporting from First Steps that they need to. She said they “will not stop THIS year.”

All she does is raise money and take credit for any and all jobs the happen in SC. that is kinda sick if you think about .it.

Is her kid working at the State House gift shop or wherever the hell she was working. I give credit to Nookie – she got 75% of her family state jobs. I’m surprised she’s not taking credit for that.

What chaps my butt is the $12,000 pay raise the Gen. Asses. gave themselvess.
This automaticly DOUBLES their retirement immediately, which they can draw and continue to serve and draw their salaries!!
Where else does an expense account count toward retirement? NO WHERE!
He who makes the rules wins!
Haley, Harrell and many others use the campaign money they raise as supplemental income too!
They know the salary when they file and run for office. If they feel the salary is too little, let them get a real job and work like the rest of us.

The truth is that she simply does not have the knowledge to know what to veto. It is an election year and she wants to make sure not to reduce funds for anyone — except, of course, for the children’s museum in Greenville. That would be intolerable funding.

Reply
GreenvilleGirl June 12, 2014 at 2:27 pm

I think there are a lot of Greenville voters who will remember Haley vetoing these funds. Fund Obama’s education initiative (grade: F) but don’t fund an educational museum (grade: A) which has proven to be an asset to children and school groups in the upstate. The children(and adults) learn so much from the children’s museum, and it’s not like”learning” — it’s fun!

Shame on you, Gov. Haley………I’ll remember when November rolls around.

It’s really sad that you seem to always be taking cheap shots at Gov. Haley. It seems she can’t do enough to please you. How do you know what she should veto? Have you ever been elected Governor?

You seem like such a nice young man, but to hold such vitriol and antipathy for the Governor of SC is terribly unbecoming a gentleman of influence such as yourself.

For the sake of your wife and chidren you should do better. They seem very nice.

Some of us have the good sense to know that we would not be able to do a good job in a given position. Others, like Haley, either lack that realization or don’t care and not only run and have one abysmal term, they seek additional terms, probably solely for the purpose of self enrichment from a financial standpoint, the state and the people be damned.

Radical Muslim, Radical Christian– what’s the difference? The people of Iraq are Sunni, Shiites and Kurds first. They were surviving until W screwed that up over a personal vendetta with Saddam. They are not “patriots” of Iraq, their ideology separates them, they would prefer dividing up into three separate countries. Since you are the expert and willing to send our young people to die fighting a cause that has been going on for a thousand years– what would you do? If Obama does nothing he is wrong, if he does anything he is wrong. So WTF, go back to your internet porn and enjoy the rest of the day.

I just WISH THE H#!! I could talk you into going to Iran, and call the government Radical Muslim, as an insult (though you’d never insult the D*#k you suck)….

But I swear I’d pay you to go over there and insult them, like you HATE Christians…And forgive me: But I’d LMAO as I watched the total IGNORANCE on your face, when they figured out what your Stupid Leftwing @$$ said to them…

I think the 18.5 million should be returned to the voters. Lets see, only 15.92% of the electorate voted. That is 451,436 voters from.
http://www.enr-scvotes.org/SC/51763/133243/en/summary.html

$18,500,000 divided by 451,436
That’s a whopping $40.98 each.

But, whatever you do/think, she has done a marvelous job in spite of her liberal opposition from all directions, including you. If she were not female (and one who perhaps snickered at your advances), we would not hear all this BS from your site almost daily. In case your have forgotten, this state was purposely organized/structured for the legislature to rule this state. And, sadly, it does. Think Harrell, among about 12 other RINOs, for example.

Shoot, the SC Governor was restricted to (1) four term until 1980. The SC Governor did not even submit a budget until 1993. Gov Haley learned to work with the General Assembly such as she can. Regardless, a second term for Haley without any mandate or referendum will be more of the same. Hodges won based on the Education Lottery…the 2018 race for Governor will entail casino gambling. Leatherman will not make it to 2018 and the Lt Gov will be chosen by the Governor. So, really, Haley is just filling in till 2018. She won’t make any waves since her acquittal by Ethics. On a national level, that Marchant divorce connection shot down her star.

The problem in SC is that Democrats co-opted the Republican Party in SC when the winds changed after the Civil Rights Act of 1968. Reagan’s dominance in the 1980’s changed the national stage back to Republicans. Many “Democrat loyalties” in SC switched to Republican so as to keep control over “their” government.
