Ron Paul: Tax Reform Useless Without Spending Reform

WASHINGTON STILL REFUSES TO EVEN CONSIDER REDUCING GOVERNMENT REVENUE …

By Ron Paul  ||  Recently, Republican leaders in Congress unveiled a “tax reform” plan that they claimed would provide the American people with a simpler, fairer, and more efficient tax system. While this plan does lower some tax rates and contains some other changes that may make next April a little less painful for Americans, there is little in it to excite supporters of liberty.

Taxes may even increase under this plan for some Americans, as it eliminates some of those tax deductions labeled “loopholes.” When I served in Congress I opposed bills that “closed loopholes” because closing loopholes is just a fancy way of saying raising taxes. Anything that leaves more money in the hands of the people is beneficial to both liberty and economic efficiency. As economist Thomas DiLorenzo put it, “…private individuals always spend their own money more efficiently than government bureaucrats do,” therefore sound economics, as well as a concern for liberty, requires opposition to any proposal to “let government bureaucrats spend more of the people’s hard-earned money.”

Tax reformers also stray from sound economics when they endorse a tax system that is designed to direct consumption and savings. I share the concern that the current tax system distorts people’s behavior by discouraging savings. However, the solution is not for the government to create a tax code that punishes consumption in order to encourage savings. A truly efficient market is one where individuals are completely free to determine how to allocate their incomes between consumption and savings. No politician or bureaucrat can know the proper allocation of savings and investment that meets the needs of every individual, and government policies designed to cause individuals to devote more of their income to savings than they otherwise would distorts the market just as much as policies that encourage excess consumption.

The Republican tax plan adopts what is called “dynamic scoring.” Dynamic scoring is designed to recognize that tax cuts, by incentivizing work and investment, can increase revenue to the government. This is the argument of the famous Laffer curve. It has always seemed odd to me that a supposed free-market economist would argue for tax cuts on the grounds that it would enrich the state’s coffers. After all, the more money the state has the greater its ability to violate our liberties. Does this mean that those concerned with liberty should vote against tax cuts? Of course not; the solution is to make sure tax cuts are big enough that they cost the government revenue.

Sadly, politicians in Washington refuse to consider any tax plan that would decrease government revenue. This is because the prevalent attitude in DC favors protecting the welfare-warfare state over protecting our liberties. As the obsession with the Laffer curve shows, even many alleged supporters of the free market only pretend to support liberty as a means to enhance the well-being of the welfare-warfare state.

Many politicians in Washington also forget that deficit spending is itself a tax. When the government runs deficits it uses money that could be more efficiently used by the private sector. Deficit spending also leads the Federal Reserve to monetize debt, thus burdening people with the inflation tax.

Instead of worrying over the latest plan to enable the government to more efficiently take our money, people who want to advance liberty must focus on breaking the intellectual and political consensus in support of the welfare-warfare state. Only then can we radically reduce all taxes, including the most insidious and regressive of taxes — the inflation tax.

Paul : Sadly, politicians in Washington refuse to consider any tax plan that would decrease government revenue.

They won’t as long as they continue to call a reduction of future increases in spending, spending cuts.

It would help if someone other than a Liberal-Tarian, FITS-type, Kook-job presented the argument…

he opposed closing special interest loopholes because that means “raising taxes”. that’s an interesting posture. and so full of shit it reeks all the way from texas.

In detail, please articulate how removing an exemption that reduces one’s tax liability is not raising taxes.

Tax loopholes: exemptions for children, child care tax credit, deductible medical expenses, mortgage interest, and so on. Which of these loopholes are you against? Your name fits you perfectly.

On a different note, it would seem that the concept of Nepotism does not enter into former congressman Paul’s sense of outrage at the way things are accomplished in Washington…

You seem to equate Paul to a Tea Partier Republican. If you remember, those of that ilk had nothing but boos for Paul. Truth is Democrats support that same nepotism, therefore are more like those you describe. They just talk a different game on the campaign trail.

Name the evils in our government and the democrats have done nothing to stop them. Not even Obamacare, that if you researched you would know it was written by an attorney who worked for the insurance companies. She became a congressional aide (Democrat) and then wrote the legislation to protect profits of the healthcare industry – which is obviously the least efficient in the world based on dollars spent and the health results of the people. Yes Nepotism, but it is an injustice to say Paul’s Nepotism.

On another note Paul refuses the lavish, taxpayer-funded Congressional pension, and makes a habit out of returning allocated office funds to the Treasury department. Both Crony Parties have jumped on Paul because they are out to get him. He is the enemy of anyone trying to use government to line their own pockets. Here is a more balanced perspective.

Every dollar of tax revenue that slips out via those loopholes is another dollar added onto the national debt, a dollar that will be paid back by the American people one way or another.

Now, ask yourself: Where are those dollars going? It sure as hell ain’t going to you and me.

If you actually care about the national debt, spending cuts isn’t the only thing you should be talking about. Lower spending with lower revenue doesn’t solve jack shit and Ron Paul knows it, not without catastrophic cuts that would fuck millions in our country.

Reply
SolitaryPillar May 19, 2014 at 12:32 pm

Don’t worry, the national debt is not going to be paid back anyway. It is a joke to keep on saying our children, who are the most unemployed and underpaid, are ever going to pay back what we could not.

Ron Paul is just saying the obvious, and something he has always said, however a message that even if received is to late.

Don’t forget that Ron Paul was the only congressman against crony capitalism. Obama was integral in the doling out of billions to banks and so on. I am sure in their mind they deserved every penny.

As far as the laffer curve, that was instituted with Ronald Reagan when there was no national debt. He thought if he lowered taxes, the government would get even more money. He started the landslide into debt that cannot be paid back.

When you are bankrupt, the best thing you can do is admit it. Your thought about f&*^%ing millions is misguided. The situation we are in now is like a family with all of the grown children still living at home. Problem is the house is about to go back to the bank. I’m sure the children will like that!

This fool does realize that the IRS is being used to persecute political enemies of the democrats???

RonPaul represents the epitome of the Liberal-Tarian …This punch-drunk son of a b!tch is railing on about reform, and his stupid @$$ sat there, head in the sand, while Obama F*#ked the American people.

Ron: You ignorant B@**#rd…you have FAILED miserably in protecting us from the Gestapo level of the democrat party…..Why in the F*#k do you think we would ever trust a Liberal-Tarian, with any promise of Reform…????…

Thank God for Trey Gowdy, and the Conservatives…Paul just wants to keep riding the Gravy Train, and running his mouth about all he would do, if he could garner more than 3% of the vote…which consists of his Nutjobs and kooks…

SomeDude May 19, 2014 at 1:24 pm

Wow. Take a look at Ron Paul’s track record. Everything he proposed was shot down during votes. It took years to get a partial audit of the Federal Reserve passed through Congress.

Apparently you have no idea what you are talking about when you say stuff like “This punch-drunk son of a b!tch is railing on about reform, and his stupid @$$ sat there, head in the sand, while Obama F*#ked the American people.” You’re a child.

Again: if he is not SHOUTING to the Heavens about the Targeting of Conservatives using the IRS, he needs to STFU.

Paul is a Liberal-Tarian who wastes time chasing unicorns to feed his ego, and his kook following, instead of minding the hen-house…He’s worthless, except for being a freak-show.

PROSECUTE the very Corrupt President in Chief…then talk reform…if he can’t do that…I don’t need him…

I’m sure if Nixon or Bush did anything as bad as Obama, this some-beech (w/ idiots like Sanford and FITS) would be rushing to the nearest TV camera, trying to take out the Republican ..because the media would love them for it…

Thats why Liberal-Tarians get less than 5% of the vote…Maybe you should try what the Liberals do, give away unlimited hand-outs and lie and deny about what a Stupid F*#k you are…

SomeDude May 19, 2014 at 2:07 pm

You’re partisan, ergo, it’s pointless trying to have a discussion with you. Your main concern is with the IRS targeting Conservatives; you fail to recognize that Liberals = Conservatives and Republicans = Democrats.

Good day.

USAFVetDan May 20, 2014 at 2:10 pm

So…. not only are you a troll, you’re a factually challenged troll. Ron Paul garnered more campaign donations from active military personnel than all other candidates COMBINED! With baseline budgeting there is no incentive for government bureaucrats to cut spending. Eliminate baseline budgeting as the first step then reform the federal tax code and cut spending across the board by 10 percent to start. None of this will happen as those in congress have no balls.
