COLUMBIA MAYOR STEVE BENJAMIN’S ALLIES ARE ALL GETTING INDICTED …
Former South Carolina State House lobbyist and university official Ed Givens pleaded guilty in federal court this week on charges of “misprision of a felony” – or failing to alert authorities to a criminal enterprise in which he was involved or of which he had knowledge.
What criminal enterprise are we referring to? A kickback scheme at S.C. State University, the Palmetto State’s ethically and financially challenged historically black university – which remains under the thumb of corrupt black politicians.
Anyway, it has been widely reported that Columbia S.C. “Mayorhood” Steve Benjamin was the original target of the S.C. State investigation – and that the probe of the university began as a probe into his shady ‘Village at Rivers’ Edge’ deal, a government-subsidized affordable housing boondoggle.
This project – which received at least $7.8 million in federal “stimulus” money and millions more in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (USHUD) – officially went belly-up last year.
Benjamin has refused to address the case, telling one local television reporter who asked him about it to “grow up.”
Real mature … of course it make sense for Benjamin to think he’s invincible given everything he’s gotten away with in the past.
Benjamin and Givens go way back. They went to school together, took the bar exam together, were both attorneys at the McNair Law Firm and they both run in the same corrupt circles in Columbia, S.C.. Givens actually appeared in one of Benjamin’s campaign commercials, and was captured shedding “tears of joy” when the latter was first elected mayor in 2010.

Mayor Steve is different from your average guy because he loots the City from the “high finance” side, not the normal way thugs rip of the City . His law firm, Parker Poe, is doing all the bond work and other financial stuff besides. They are charging premium prices (and that equals a heck of a lot of money) for City of Columbia work.
Bond work is not something that you buy off a price list as it is all subject to negotiation. And since King Fish is negotiating with “himself” I bet he is going to be generous. And since the poor taxpayer pays the bill, usually over 20 or 30 years, who is to know?

About 18 years ago, I met a guy who used to work narcotics in the Charleston area. He said there was a gang, cartel, or other group of AA guys who would let their pinky fingernail grow out and they would use it as a little scoop and snort coke from it. Steve Benjamin is into a lot of things. As Mayor is very active and influential in City development including the USC sororities and office building that are being built by the Coliseum. He is also on the USC Development Board Foundation, and on the subcommittee that manages the substantial endowment.
So, he works to permit the buildings, then has control over the fund where the money will end up. Hmmm, lets see. is there opportunity for an enterprising young gentleman to make a few bucks off this? You bet ya. Coming and going.
