MORE THAN TWO-THIRDS OF SOUTH CAROLINIANS BACK K-12 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
They buried it on the internet, but The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper did at least see fit to put the story front and center in its Sunday Metro print editions over the Easter weekend.
The scoop? Overwhelming public support for an issue near and dear to our hearts: School choice.
According to polling data from Winthrop University (leaked exclusively to The State), a compelling majority of South Carolinians approve of “allowing tax deductions for people who donate money to organizations that provide scholarships for children to attend private or religious schools.”
How compelling a majority? A whopping 66.1 percent of Palmetto State residents support such a program – compared to only 26.1 percent who would oppose it. That’s good news for a movement that has struggled in the court of opinion thanks to the local mainstream media’s slavish devotion to the status quo.
The poll – which surveyed 877 South Carolinians from April 6-13 – has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.
Ever since its inception seven years ago this website has relentlessly pushed for market-based education reforms – most notably expanded parental choice. Last year, South Carolina lawmakers approved a limited scholarship program in the 2013-14 state budget for students with exceptional needs. Under this program, private individuals and corporations fund these special needs scholarships by making tax credit eligible donations to “Scholarship Funding Organizations,” or “SFOs.”
We believe this program should be expanded – dramatically. And made a part of permanent law.
In fact the only reason that hasn’t happened is the political clout of liberal government-subsidized bureaucratic lobbies like the S.C. Association of School Administrators (SCASA) – whose top executive is actually running for State Superintendent of education this year.

The bottom line here is simple: More people are beginning to recognize the abject failure of South Carolina’s government-run system – which is hands-down the worst state-run education bureaucracy in America. Increasingly, they are ready for real leadership on behalf of real reforms – not more status quo big government.

Some will be earnest attempts, some will be exploitative businesses disguised as “schools.” It comes down to teachers and school environment, but I’m not convinced the “competition” of school choice will improve anything. But the real question is this: do public schools benefit society? I think it barely benefits the students, let alone society as a whole.
Education is a service that sells itself. Everyone knows the benefits of it, to include the less educated.
But if you’re going to open a school and force people to go, then is it really that good of a school?
A restaurant with a line of people outside the door is very likely a good restaurant. They have a superior product for a price people can afford. The people aren’t forced under punishment of law to go there. They made a choice to go to that one instead of all the others.
Why should schools be different?
Childrens’ minds are far too sacred a responsibility to give to politicians.
And, for the most part, private schools pick and choose who they accept. Oh, and those students from wealthy families are better able to compete since they often have superior resources. Think about kids and computers in the 80’s and 90’s. Kids whose parents were able to afford one had a substantial advantage over those whose parents couldn’t.
The issue shouldn’t be over privatization…. but rather over the manner in which public schools are run. Efficient management and appropriate funding for the desired level of performance should be the goal.
If you aren’t satisfied with the quality of public education and wish something better, feel free to upgrade to a private school at your own expense. You have that right. However, public schools are akin to public roads…. we pay for them as a society, and all of society benefits. Imagine the chaos if we decided to privatize the roads.
The biggest difference between the public and private sectors is that the public sector cannot refuse to provide services because they aren’t profitable. Public schools teach not simply the most well-adjusted and capable students, but also those with physical and mental/ emotional disabilities. Private schools can be far more restrictive in who they accept. Require admittance to every applicant up to capacity, and private schools lose their performance advantages. The issue isn’t some magical free market wizardry that makes private schools better today, but rather the rules they operate under. Change the rules public schools struggle with, and performance will improve.

Why is it that we appear to be building mega- expensive $150,000,000.00 high schools that have such customized architectural features? As a tax payer I would rather we standardize the new high school facilities to save money. I would rather the money be applied to attracting/compensating/retaining top-notch teachers instead of lining the pockets of builders and architects. Why does Cain Bay, for instance, demand a different plan than River Bluff ? I suspect tens of millions could be saved by architectural standardization with designs based upon projected school population.

Want to spend money on helping someone else afford private schooling? Fine, perhaps that should be considered charitable and therefore tax deductible. That has zero impact on how someone feels about “government monopolies” or “indoctrination” or vouchers or any of the other bullshit preached by school choice zombies and the out of state millionaires that use them like a teenage boy uses Kleenex.

-Public education was first forced on SC by the carpet-bagger Republicans after the war of Northern aggression.
-The Democrats fought it with a vengence,… for 100 years.
-The black schools were quite inferior by design.
-They still are, whether in “the corridor” or higher education like Carolina State.
-Currently, SC public schools rank in the middle third of all US schools in test scores, college admission, and graduation rates, not “the worst”.
-Without the public schools in the corridor, SC would rank in the top third.
If we’re gon’re gonna debate this here, let’s at least base it on the facts.
