PAPER’S CHAIRMAN LINKED TO SCUTTLED FEDERAL CORRUPTION CASE

This website has repeatedly exposed corruption at The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier – South Carolina’s largest, oldest mainstream media outlet.

Two recent examples of such reporting can be found HERE and HERE.

The 30,000-foot view? The Post and Courier is in the business of establishment protection – not investigative journalism. It exists to coddle and spin on behalf of powerful elected officials and institutions – not challenge or expose them on behalf of its readers.

This explains why its news and editorial coverage has veered so wildly to the left in recent years – and why reporters who dare to challenge South Carolina’s corrupt fiscally liberal establishment get run out of its newsroom faster than you can say “Bobby Harrell.”

Anyway …

The latest scandal to befall this paper revolves around its owner and chairman, Pierre Manigualt, who has played a lead role in implementing its policy of status quo accommodation.

According to multiple sources – including socialites in Charleston, S.C., investigators at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Columbia, S.C. and attorneys at the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) in Washington, D.C. – Manigault was the subject of federal corruption investigation spanning from 2008-10.

In fact the Lowcountry aristocrat was reportedly on the verge of being popped by former U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins’ office in early 2010.

“(Manigault) was openly discussing it with friends,” one source told us. “According to him an announcement was imminent.”

All of that changed in January 2010, though, when Wilkins resigned as U.S. Attorney. In his place, U.S. President Barack Obama appointed defense lawyer William Nettles – one of Manigault’s sailing buddies.

At that point, the case against the owner of the Post and Courier “disappeared.”

So … what did the feds have on Manigault?

Sources familiar with the case tell FITS the original investigation centered around illegal drug use (Manigault’s cocaine habit is no secret in the Holy City) – but that it quickly spread into “other areas.”

We’re also told the decision to drop the case had less to do with Manigault’s cozy relationship with Nettles and more to do with the Obama administration’s “default setting” for dealing with high-level corruption.

“They would rather own someone – have that person work for them – than bust them,” one of our D.C. sources said of Obama’s Justice Department. “It’s more profitable for them to have someone in their pocket than it is to have them in prison.”

Nice …

FITS is continuing to investigate the Manigault story. Stay tuned for more details …

PM allegedly partakes in some nose candy.

This sparks a TWO YEAR DOJ INVESTIGATION.

TBG will never even joke about effing with the “Do Not Remove – Under Penalty of Federal Law” tags on mattresses, ever again.

Maybe if the Feds had popped him, he would have “T-RAVed” and the P&C would now be more libertarian than the DailyPaul.

“Void Where Prohibited” ….. hmmm,

They try to humiliate you in the hospital. They make you pee in a bottle and I hate that. I was in the hospital and the nurse said, “You have to pee in this bottle.” She left and I filled it with Mountain Dew. She came back and I chugged it. She was puking for days. It’s a sick world and I’m a happy guy!

I had general anesthesia. That’s so weird. because you go to sleep in one room and then you wake up four hours later in a totally different room. Just like college.

per your usual creative humor, I am in stitches. Mountain Dew!!

To the college thing…add naked with stacks of soaked clothing which may or may contain yours. I heard something about streaking, admin building fountain…

” HEARD something about streaking” – yeah, right!

Although I am no longer affiliated with the federal government in that capacity, I hereby absolve you and grant you full pardon in regard to all tags removed from upholstered goods, whether you were the final consumer or not. If you were the final consumer, said actions were, in fact, legal. If you were not the final consumer, I do not want to know why you were sneaking around removing these tags from folks’ upholstered/filled furniture. We might *should* have investigated you…

I know both Pierre Manigault and Bill Nettles fairly well. To my knowledge, they are not “buddies” or “cozy.” Pretty sure you are just making that part up, Will. About 1/3 of what you right is just for shits and giggles anyway. Right, Will?

Now – was Pierre once on the Feds’ radar? Most probably. At one time, ALL of Thomas Ravenel’s ambiguously metrosexual downtown boys were on their radar. In the end, they only popped Thomas because he was an elected official. Otherwise, those pretty boys could have snorted half of Bolivia’s annual production on Church Street at 10:00 am on Sunday morning and the Feds could have cared less.

And your DC source’s description of the Obama Justice Department? That’s a valid description of EVERY Justice Department since 1980. If the Feds couldn’t scare the shit out of otherwise law-abiding citizens with draconian recreational drug use laws, the whole system would shut down. They would never indict, much less convict anyone of any substance without a scared little Confidential Informant shaking in the corner crying for his mama, or his prep school “roommate.”

I dont know much about Pierre Manigault but I do know that referring to the Post and Courier as “liberal” is the height of absurdity and that if the Obama Administration is going “easy” on Manigault to curry favor with the Editorial staff, they arent getting much for that effort.

P&C is a relentless critic of Obama, blasting him editorially every few daysThey consistently endorse Republicans(they havent endorsed a Democrat for President since FDR),are big fans of the VERY conservative Tim Scott, carry mostly Right Wing op Eders, and are obsessed with opposition to Obamacare.

Yeh big “liberals”Fits.

Reply
Fits Aint No Republican March 29, 2014 at 6:11 pm

The term”liberal” is actually meaningless here.It is simply used as an epithet that Fits throws out at anybody or anything that he disagrees with at any given point in time.Further,it doesnt matter how much he disagrees with them.Often,he will label someone a “liberal” even though he agrees with them on almost every issues save one or two.

Fits is just a conservative/libertarian Republican who likes to toss brickbats at fellow Republicans who dont live up to his standards of purity.

Extra points for correctly using “douchebaggery” in a sentence. If you can get jackassery and nitwittery in with douchebaggery, you get a certificate suitable for framing.

Hahahahahaha!!!! ROFLMFAO!!!!

FITS accuses P&C with inflated pomposity, of lacking what FITS lacks!!!

“The Post and Courier is … not investigative journalism..[doesn’t] challenge [politicians]”

The only thing this very entertaining but notably unschooled and unskilled (re: investigative journalism) political gossip blog “exposes” is conjectures and allegations of politician personal soap opera conduct. And writer ill formed ‘conclusions’ of pseudo ‘fact’.

Skilled politicians aren’t ‘challenged’ by FITS. I bet they read avidly for deception tips.

How bout ‘challenging’ AG Wilson on what he’s doing with the additional budget for the Public Integrity Unit???

Not published by FITS: Competent, fact based investigations (psssst….conjecture is not fact) that could ‘expose’ or challenge a politician. Like specific, actionable acts of malfeasance, misconduct by one or more particular politician; failure to perform due diligence legislative fact finding; reliable foundation to legislative irrationality or other basis for challenging enactments; etc.

How the P&C pisses of FITS, posted on the P&C site Friday, 28 MAR at 4:50 pm; copies, pasted, and reprinted without permission, infra:

” ‘When I’m wrong I admit it – and make it right. That’s what Thomas Ravenel does,’ he said in a statement in July. ‘I had a beer at the club and a glass of wine prior to that at dinner. I was not drunk, and I look forward to making my case in court.’

Before accepting a guilty plea, Ravenel was required to admit to prosecutors that he’d been drinking and was intoxicated at the time he was arrested, the East Hampton Star reported.

Ravenel said he took a breath sobriety test at the stop that he later learned put his blood alcohol content at .09. The legal BAC threshold in New York state is .08.”

So, then, Ravenel was either lying in his original statement regarding the amount of alcohol he had consumed, or he lied under oath in court to enter his guilty plea. It can’t be neither; not even the biggest tin-foil hats in the defense bar will claim that a single beer followed an hour or two later by a single glass of wine will put a “full-growed” man anywhere near an 0.09% BAC.

If I was the judge I would have found him guilty anyway just for referring to himself in third person.

Admittedly, the P&C is for the most part a rag, but the P&C publishes the DUI guilty plea piece, and this piece on the P&C publisher appears here about 24 hours later. Could be coincidence, but I stopped believing in coincidence as a political concept decades ago…

Strangely enough, no update regarding any of this in the Ravenel channel of FITS News…

Adapted with permission (from myself) from an earlier earlier comment by…myself…

Not in a SC prison running up a tab for the State’s taxpayers to pay.
Just because he’s a sick drug addict, doesn’t make him a major criminal deserving of free room and board gratis of Tax Payers.
Common Sense justice is needed across the board in SC.
