“WHAT THE SET COMMANDS …”

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul continues to court establishment “Republicans” as he assembles his 2016 presidential bid – an effort which is rapidly becoming a case study in the extent to which principles are sacrificed for power.

Paul endorsed liberal “Republican” presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012, and this year he’s backing liberal “Republican” Senate leader Mitch McConnell. In between those betrayals he came down to the Palmetto State and raised money for the ethically (and literally) bankrupt S.C. Republican Party – which is slavishly devoted to the expansion of the state’s bloated and inefficient government bureaucracy.

Seriously … how much establishment pole can one politician smoke?

It’s gotten to the point we’re thinking about sending Paul some kneepads … or maybe a copy of Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea.

“In-kind contributions,” you know.

Anyway … Paul’s latest GOP establishment play comes in the form of his association with New York “Republican” windbag and establishment rolodex Mallory Factor, who heads up an “exclusive,” invitation-only monthly gathering of special interest carpetbaggers each month at a swanky private club in his adopted home of Charleston, S.C.

We used to be invited to attend these gatherings, but then we eviscerated one of the national sellouts invited by Factor to address his crony capitalist horde.

And the invitations dried up …

Oh well …

Factor is now Rand Paul’s South Carolina “consultant,” which is great if you want to suck up to Lindsey Graham bankrollers … not-so-great if you want to represent the Palmetto State residents who are forced to pick up the tab for all that special interest whoring.

In fact all three of the “conservative” or “Tea Party” candidates for the GOP presidential nomination are disappointing us lately – Paul for his ongoing ideological retreat, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) for his recent sellout of our individual liberties and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for his calculated kowtowing to the nation’s military-industrial complex.

Sheesh … and these guys are supposed to be holding the “Republican” sellouts accountable?

Looks like we’ll be “throwing away our endorsement” again in 2016 …

This is true. People don’t like extreme libertarians. They’re comfortable with some libertarian ideas- less government, smaller military, less foreign entanglements, but don’t like the idea of caveat emptor on prescription meds, housing construction, food supply, etc.

Yep! March 28, 2014 at 3:18 pm

Yep, the same 50%+1 that elected both Obama and Bush.

Everything you said it true. Hardcore libertarians have a PR problem.
People aren’t comfortable with complete freedom and responsibility, it’s just a fact.

Mike at the Beach March 29, 2014 at 12:40 am

“Complete” freedom and responsibility is really only possible without government. I’ll take some government (as little as possible, please, but some) in my life if it means we don’t jump back hundreds of years of to Darwin as a model for social survival.

Yep! March 29, 2014 at 9:43 am

Well that’s the whole “rub” isn’t it Mike? Everyone has a different definition of “some” or what “as little as possible” means.

The Constitution has failed to keep government small(by my definition of course) and also failed to keep corruption at bay via the technique of “separation of powers”.

Our state is a mess. There’s no fix short of collapse IMO, and then starting again with some other variant I suppose “in the name of civilization”.

Thing is, Democide doesn’t seem to be very civilized, so I don’t see this argument you and Max bring up about the devolution of man or retreat the “bronze age”, etc. et al

I simply recognize, like the Founders, that people are self interested. They don’t sprout wings and grow a halo just because they are elected, in fact if anything they sprout horns per Lord Acton.

The Founders clearly understood the nature of man and government. They just failed to produce a document that could control it.

Yep! March 29, 2014 at 10:28 am

One other note, when you understand the nature of man in general, you realize that government that bases its ruling, success, and even funding on the vote of men, well, it should give everyone great pause.

Maybe you can make the argument that taking people’s money with a club is worse taking it by a vote, maybe I can buy that-but when the end result is a gov’t that regulates how our toilets flush, send kids overseas to die for dubious causes, & spies on everyone, all with OUR money, I might just take my chances with the club.

Yep! March 29, 2014 at 10:33 am

lol, one other note: Most people don’t wanted “as little as possible” government. So you have a problem under the current government model.

Yep! March 28, 2014 at 3:48 pm

The country is already a circus, with the stupid tax being shared by those stupid and not.

euwe max March 28, 2014 at 3:53 pm

Your prescription is to get rid of law enforcement at the circus so the circus master gets more leeway over the gaming by using rigged tables, and gets a bigger payday by introducing unregulated prostitution.

Why not just deed the country over to the 1% and be done with it?

Yep! March 28, 2014 at 3:56 pm

You assume a lack of competition for the circus master.

Paying the watchers to watch out for the stupid doesn’t seem to be working well. But maybe it’s just a matter of the right mix of people and laws to fix everything. Toss in a little more money printing and I’m sure the bugs will get worked out eventually.

You simply don’t understand how politics works. It’s one thing to “stick to your guns” and give the middle finger to the political establishment from the House floor, but to be elected President in our two party system (and face it, that is the only way one gets elected) you have to kiss some ass. So, you tell me, which would you rather have? A purist who talks on the House floor for hours but doesn’t have meaningful legislative accomplishments to show for it, or someone who dials down the rhetoric and sucks up when necessary to actually have a shot at achieving some of those goals that are talked about?

And… give me an example where Rand has actually voted the ‘wrong’ way. I think there is without a doubt that he holds true many, if not all of the same principles as his father, he’s just a smarter politician. You don’t get further than the House or maybe the Senate by just pissing everyone who isn’t exactly like you off. /end rant.

Well then stick to the Ron Paul/Ross Perot ticket. Let me know how that works out for you. I don’t think the “differences” in principles exist at all. Just a difference in style. Having Ron Paul say we need to understand the psyche of Iran in pursuing nuclear weapons in a presidential debate doesn’t exactly get you places, but I guess that’s of no importance. There are more eloquent and less inflammatory ways to defend a sensible, non-interventionist foreign policy.

It hard to explain civics to a person who hated the subject in High School – I know, because that’s me.

The whole notion of civilization and the compromises involved require a little bit of thought. Sort of like calculus or accounting, only different. The place where they merge is in elementary school – the mind has to be brought to the point of understanding how all the facets of civilization interlock, and what holds it all together.

You can’t explain how limits allow the computation of the area under a curve to whatever epsilon you wish to a person who can’t find the area of a unit square.

Simply grabbing a gun, a case of beer and a copy of survivalist weekly and saying – get rid of gubmint! I can take care of my own! is going the *other* way.

Hey Sparkie, Oxygen is a noble gas

———-

The Noble Gases (Group 18) are located in the far right of the periodic table. These elements were previously referred to as the inert gases due to their one important chemical property: they are extremely nonreactive due to their filled valence shell. The reason for this is because Noble Gases were set apart and distinguished relatively late compared to other element groups.

Helium 1s2
Neon [He] 2s2 2p6
Argon [Ne] 3s2 3p6
Krypton [Ar] 3d10 4s2 4p6
Xenon [Kr] 4d10 5s2 5p6
Radon [Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s2 6p6

Oxygen is not a noble gas.

euwe max March 29, 2014 at 10:46 am

Your crosswords have the periodic table in them?

shifty henry March 29, 2014 at 1:59 pm

I keep a few small, portable crossword puzzles around just to fill in time. A guy named Myles Mellor puts them out, and they are sold at Dollar General ($1), and they easy to work with except for some of his vague clues (and some are damn clever!) I’ve never completed one without having to peek at a few of his answers because some of them could be any of half-a-dozen words that have no relationship to each other. Yes, he throws in the periodic table at least once in every book.

euwe max March 29, 2014 at 2:08 pm

I did crosswords once but it seemed a little too arbitrary for me.. so I started doing sudoku. I really like that game for passing time in a place without wifi.. I take my kindle with me when I go somewhere I might end up waiting.

In my youth, I used to sit blank faced and idle. Occasionally people would put money in a nearby ashtray, thinking I must be spare changing, or disabled.

shifty henry March 29, 2014 at 3:11 pm

It’s interesting to me what our individual capabilities are, and how we either inherited or learned various abilities. Even though my working life has been as a professional accountant, I can’t figure out sudoku worth a damn!

I also have a difficult time completing cryptographic puzzles, but I’ll tell you could and who can. My mother, raised on a dirt farm, managed to get her high school degree and went to a two year secretarial school where she learned shorthand and then worked for Senator Kefauver in Chattanooga. She worked those crypto puzzles in about four cigarettes. Part of my time in Naval Intelligence I did cryptographic work – what’s wrong with me? And my country cousin (my Mom’s nephew ) with no education beyond high school can also work them.

After the Navy I decided it would be cool to learn shorthand from my Mom’s textbooks – couldn’t teach myself that for shit!

ps: In other shocking news I just read that there are 318,979,564,000 different ways to play the first four moves per side in a game of chess. Now who in the hell took the time to figure that out? Actually, I know about 6.

software.

.,..and Sudoku is just a matter of elimination by exclusion. You can’t have the same number horizontally and vertically. That sets up a mesh that eliminates several possibilities right there. Easy ones stop there, but for the hard ones you have to start thinking, after you figure out the first few.

Yeah… thinking. I know, right? Most people want to get paid if they gotta think, my snizzle!

The American people are at fault for always wishing to vote for someone who might actually win, but its that mentality that allows wealthy elitist scumbags like Mitt Romney and Barack Obama to rise to the top. America is still asleep at the wheel. When the American people begin to actually inform themselves politically and start voting for the candidates that they truly believe in and not just vote for someone because they feel like they have the best chance of winning… Then we will take America back from the liberal juggernaut and also take back our dignity! Political purity is not only an oxymoron, but can be just as evil as “selling out.” Rand Paul is trying to get elected, and no politician in that endeavor can be 100% forthcoming. Even Will’s second-most beloved Ron Paul holds a lot of kookiest ideas for his inner circle and home crowds only. His MOST beloved Thomas Ravenel did PRECISELY the same thing to get elected Treasurer. he courted all the right Columbia folks, chased the right money, and said ZERO about his kooky-ass drug legalization bullshit because he surmised (correctly) that he would never get elected if he did so. We are a representative republican democracy, not a cult. I can’t think of a single politician (EVER) with whom I agree 100% of the time. Hell, I can’t think any human being with whom I agree 100% of the time; that would require an imaginary friend.

Let me get this straight:

A mousse/gelled haired son of a fruitcake spouts off shit and appears on track to be one of a shitload of dipshits vying for the Republican presidential nomination???

And I am supposed to be interested in what this dipshit has to say or propose for the betterment of this country????

fuck the whole bunch.

I’m voting for Chris Christie – at least I know how big of a crook he is.

Sometimes you need a crooked SOB to get things done!!!

Cristie & Lindsey all the way is what I say!!!!!!!

Really, Sen Paul is not Presidential material…yet. Gov Christie is your 2016 nominee. Heard that Condi is interested in the VP job. There is your ticket for 2016. Aneurysm or not, Webster Hubbell’s baby-momma is a waste of donor capital.

The very fact that Gov Christie is breaking records raising money for the RGA tells me establishment Republicans have tapped him as their choice in 2016. Every argument against Gov Christie is indicative of how the Democrat establishment fears his match up against their choice, Hillary. This traffic study in NJ has had more coverage on TV and radio than the Vietnam War…LoL Very telling of the Democrat desperation. If you wish this traffic study in NJ will destroy Gov Christie in one hand and shit in the other hand, which will get filled first?

Go ahead. Keep it up and you will never get invited back to that “swanky private club”. That is what this is all about.

“We used to be invited to attend these gatherings, but then we eviscerated one of the national sellouts invited by Factor to address his crony capitalist horde.

And the invitations dried up …

Oh well …”

Grow up, sic.

Wow. Usually the Paul people are pretty meticulous, but the inclusion of Mallory Factor (and having him both as a “consultant” and apparently an on-the-record spokesman) is going to hurt them badly in South Carolina. And beyond South Carolina.

It wont hurt at all.Despite the conceit of many posters and readers of this site, who believe, incorrectly, that the whole state is up in arms over the various villains pilloried daily here(See Nikki Haley,Public Enemy No.1 here who is cruising to reelection),probably 98% of the voters in SC have never heard of Mallory Factor ,know nothing about him ,and couldn’t care less about who he is or is not supporting.

Yeah, that’s exactly what an aspiring presidential campaign needs – someone getting quoted in the Washington Post who has a “pay to play” scandal in his past… and someone who’s their “South Carolina consultant” who’s from New York. Unforced errors.

IMO Rand is the best combination of conservative ideology and political reality. He is a strong conservative that can be elected . Sort of like Reagan. You win the election then govern, not the other way around. Obummer and Reagan are both examples of this though in opposite directions. From what I gather this is for naught any way as the Kentucky legislature and gov. will probably not let him run in both races. He would be foolish to give up a safe senate seat for a chance to be POTUS. just wait . What ever he decides I will support him. Great guy.

Unless Ron Paul goes full Buford T. Justice on him, Rand has TBG’s support.

I’m shocked that TBG has such a low standard. One might suggest looking at Rand’s foreign policy stance and Mitt Romney style flip flopping on several other issues as a sign that he’s not clear on what ‘liberty’ means.

Ron and Rand both purport to be libertarians (or Libertarians – it gets a bit fuzzy) but they both identify as Republicans in states where you need that “R” after your name if you want to be elected. The majority of the Republican Party views/viewed Ron as a joke and/or a kook yet he steadfastly identified as Republican until he “retired”. I’m not sure how the majority of the Republican Party nationwide views Rand – he has not been tested nationwide as his Dad was several times in his failed Presidential campaigns – but I am not sure it will be a whole lot different. But don’t look for Rand to drop the “R” after his name any time soon – I’d bet he’d drop the “R” at the beginning of his name first – and that is the real sellout.

Which politicians gave Rand Paul money in his last campaign? I was surprised when Nikki Haley jumped on the Romney bandwagon early but then I found out, he had given her a lot of money for her campaign. She owed him.

“According to this woman, who requested anonymity because of her current job as a clinical psychologist, “He and Randy came to my house, they knocked on my door, and then they blindfolded me, tied me up, and put me in their car. They took me to their apartment and tried to force me to take bong hits. They’d been smoking pot.”

I followed a link to this site and find the discussions interesting as most of you seem very anti-politician, whether conservative or liberal! I, too have come to the conclusion that the current political system is corrupt and constipated. In 2010 I came up with a solution that by-passes the political process by changing the way we vote. I called it VoteKISS (Vote to Keep It Short and Simple) and you can find the details on my website: http://www.votekiss.org. I ran for US Senator against Progressive Bernie Sanders (in VT, unlike most other states, it’s very easy to get on the ballot as an independent) and got a wopping 675 votes! That said, I’m still hoping that the idea catches the imagination of someone who knows how to promote ideas better than I do! Please visit and comment on the idea. Thanks!

Great article. I disagree that Paul is selling out. I think he is being realistic and smart by soliciting support of the people with influence or access to money.

As a Libertarian I’ll take anyone, even someone who is “Libertarian-ish” over a Liberal or a Conservative. Just because you support someone doesn’t mean you agree with 100% of their positions. Sometimes it is like choosing between a Stalin or a Hilter, the lesser of two evils.

Out of all the possible presidential candidates Rand Paul is truest Libertarian. If he has support people who he isn’t perfectly aligned with in hopes of received support down the road I say no harm no foul.

Great article! How far does the apple fall from the tree? VERY far in Rand Paul’s case. At least his dad was honest and he stuck to his guns regardless of how many brutal jabs the Zionist media threw his way. They weren’t about to let Ron Paul become president and actually focus on America’s interests instead of the interests of Israel and global Zionism! They may be willing to let the bureaucratic sell out Rand Paul slip in there… He has officially learned which side his bread is buttered on. Rand’s fall from grace has been literally nauseating thus far!
