SUICIDE ATTEMPT AVERTED …
One of South Carolina’s most heavily traveled traffic arteries ground to a halt on Thursday evening as the Columbia, S.C. police department worked to prevent a suicide attempt on an Interstate overpass.
The S.C. Highway Patrol shut down all lanes of Interstate 26 at the Harbison Boulevard exit at the request of the Columbia, S.C. police department (CPD) – whose officers were working to prevent an as-yet-unidentified man from trying to kill himself on the Harbison bridge.
“Negotiators convinced (the) man not to harm himself,” a CPD spokeswoman told FITS.
Initial reports on the cause of the shutdown were sketchy …
According to initial reports from The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper, the lane closings are due to “an obstruction in the roadway.” WLTX TV 19 (CBS – Columbia, S.C.) had much better information, reporting that the Highway Patrol had shut the lanes down so that a CPD officer could deal “with a situation on the bridge over the roadway.”

Film at 11. . . .
Hey Tomstickler how about some film of your lousy whinny self crying about people cutting trees down on their private property? Tomstickler is now wanting to tell everyone they cannot cut trees down on their private property where they live even. Hey Tom why don’t you clean up your trashy yard in Hagley first? I’ll take care of my own house without you and your tree hugging.
He’s a lib, there is no line for him philosophically at government isn’t allowed to tell you what to do with your property.
That’s why he wants to control government, so he can control you.
“at which government”
What’s this all about? Did I miss something?
now *that* was mature!
I’m happy he safe. Hope he gets help. Not a core function of government though. Is it fits?
How much did his stunt cost the taxpayer? Seriously- firetrucks, cops, paramedics, no traffic movement, etc.
His attention grab had to be well over $100k in just city “services”. You can’t calculate what the financial costs of no traffic for hour or two was…but it could be high.
CPD spokeswomen Jennifer Timmons is a former reporter for a local tv station. I’ve seen her carrying a badge and GUN. Is she a certified police officer? And why does she need a gun? Protection against chief shorty?
She most likely completed the 40 hour course at the police academy that allows her a badge and an gun, with limited arrest powers. It’s the same certification as court room bailiffs, etc. Since she is in the public eye as the department spokes-hole it’s probably not a bad idea.
40 hour course and you get limited arrest powers? Wow! One week of training and you get a police badge and gun? Maybe she should get a CWP.
The arrest powers are very limited. No traffic stops, can only arrest for a crime commented in her sight, not much more than citizens arrest powers. Has to qualify to carry. About the only real privilege is statewide carry with out the CWP restrictions. He’ll I’ve thought of volunteering as a state constable to get that. I can direct traffic in an emergency just fine, I’ve done it before with no authority other than can you help us please.
Try the Ravenel Bridge next time…
I’d be afraid the bridge would collapse before I had a chance to jump.
Based upon the amount of corrosion on that bridge: you might be right.
I know when I go to commit suicide, I want something sturdy to jump off of.
A friend of mine said he considered suicide once. When he thought of all the people it would make happy he decided against it.
If you’re going to commit suicide, take someone who deserves it down with you.
Main concern I have is:
Were the animals at Riverbanks OK/not in danger during all of this?????
Just concerned for their welfare is all I’m saying…………
