Fits: as a social scientist in training (you likely know who I am), I have to say these figures are pretty useless unless we have the absolute volume of consumption per state. It may simply be the case that there are fewer users/viewers in more conservative states, but that those users have different viewing and sexual habits (thereby altering the statistics we have here), and that (just hypothesizing, here) these different habits are manifestations of different lifestyle choices that repulse non-users in conservative areas more than in non-conservative areas. In other words, you cannot feasibly argue using the statistics in this article alone that the “Bible Belt” is somehow hypocritical. People with different or socially less-accepted habits will always be found somewhere in some quantity. The statistics in this article measures only the habits of those viewers, who may be less accepted because of other, larger reasons than mere viewership habits.
And also, there are likely very significantly positive correlations between viewing habits and certain demographics of state populations. For example, one may expect to find higher consumption of gay media in states with larger gay populations, or likewise with minorities or other groups. We need better baselines of comparison before we start accusing the “Bible Belt” of collective hypocrisy (and what would that even mean? that Christian fundamentalists view pornography?)
