It won’t matter much over time who the police chief is. Poor city leadership will drain the city of its productive people over time. The only thing keeping it going is the fact it’s the capital and gets taxpayer dollars.
Anyone notice sign in and around 5 points about a “media blackout”? I didn’t bother reading them, what’s that about?
What’s keeping this city going is the tax incomes from small and mid-sized businesses who don’t receive healthy tax breaks, which makes up for the fact that only half the city’s land area actually PAYS TAXES. The business community, especially small, has long highlighted the incompetent leadership of this city. This is nothing new. The sooner the city begins listening to the small business owners and patrons, the better. Lowering taxes and removing shady land deals from their portfolio would be a start.

There is a lot of Columbia hate on this site — often by people who live “on the other side of the river” or who attended the school of animal husbandry in the upstate. Columbia is generally a nice place (some very notable exceptions, of course), but unfortunately it’s being led by corrupt people.
Lived several years in Columbia. I am neither Lexington trailer trash nor a tater. I hated Columbia while I was living there and couldn’t wait to get out.
We all have different preferences, I suppose.
The reason we “live on the other side of the river” is because many of us wised up while we lived on “that side of the river”. The only thing left over on “that side” are the corrupt and the fools.
That school of animal husbandry is much harder to get into than your precious uSC.
Tony Fisher is a prince. He is much loved by all corners of the political spectrum. For him to reject Columbia is not just a statement, but a clear indictment. Ouch.
I thought the same thing reading the State article. Since he retired, violence in Spartanburg appears to have skyrocketed.

What does this have to do with the City of Columbia and it’s on going corruption issues? The corruption and revolving door at CPD has been going on for over eight years, more like 22 or 23 years at that department. It started with Charles Austin. When all of this started none of us had even heard of Obama. Even though T-bone was Obama’s campaign manager in South Carolina, I seriously doubt that had anything to do with any of the corruption which again predates T-Bone.

Hell I’ve been in the Midlands for just over 20 years and Columbia has been a cluster-fuck the entire time I’ve lived here. Only under T-Bone has it gotten worse, Mayor Bob was nothing more than a rubber stamp who approved everything that crossed his desk.
I have been here for over 40 years and the place only gets worse. The only thing that most Columbians are concerned with is SC sports while theyhave neglected what really matters. They have let the city go to the dogs and it is only going to get worse. Get your heads out of your asses and take this place back before it is too late.

Her qualifications don’t seem to warrant her being the assistant-night manager at the Qwiki Mart much less managing a city of 130,000 citizens and over 1200 employees.

I see Teresa has her selected candidate for Chief of Police in town today, of the three candidates one is black and is as corrupt as those here before him. Gotta keep Columbia chocolate. Columbia is as corrupt and as big of a joke as New Orleans.
I actually think Bryan Norwood is the ONLY person in the running that’s truly qualified. He ran a large police department, in a larger city and managed to come in with a better crime index (8%) than Columbia (4%). That tabloid nonsense about Chris Brown, where on Gods green American earth does the Chief of Police of a large city sign off on community service? I’ll take him over WV guy or MP dude.

I did some research into the entire turn of events. Norwood was in the top 3 running for Raleigh NC chief positron, the mayor of Richmond was pissed that he might leaving. The Chris Brown thing was stirred into a scandal so Norwood could be ousted and replaced by the assistant. A large number of residents came out in support of Norwood, pleading with city administrators to keep him as chief. Apparently he was effective in the positron and well respected by the community.
So what you’re saying is the whole Chris Brown thing was made up? You’d think he’d file suit for wrongful termination if he had a case.
Not to mention the skating rink ran a $100k deficit this year, attendance down 50%. Still a success in the city admin’s eye though, due to ALL the economic impact it has, which of course is a crock.
How interesting that Charlie Austin may still have his finger in the city’s (hair?) pie! He was quite a character while a city official. HIs hubris and narcissism were off the chart, as was his ability at bilking the city out of incredible benefits and funds for himself. That he is not behind bars is one more indictment of the legal and law enforcement communities of this state. If Charlie is still involved in this, it would explain a lot.
FWIW, the city would do well to find Tandy Carter and approach him on bended knee and beg his forgiveness and return to his old job, with apologies for their past mistakes in dealing with him. He was the only good “permanent” Chief they have had in many, many, decades.
Getting rid of Thug Santiago could only be a plus. Rumors have it that he is going to enter the world of private security. I am curious as to whether this might be true and if so, what company has standards so low that they would hire him.
Another good consideration for Chief is right under their noses, but they seem blind to the in-house talent they have in Melron Kelly. I have heard nothing but good about that guy and have had the pleasure of meeting him once or twice. He comes across as exceptionally bright, intelligent, and competent. Instead of making him a brief “interim” Chief, they would do well to consider making him their permanent front man. Unlike the trash that Leon imported into the department which has done nothing but destroy, loot, pillage, and burn, Kelly would probably be a huge morale boost to the long-suffering employees at CPD as he is truly, “one of them”, and a nice guy, to boot.
I have known “Kelly” for probably 18-20 years. When he was working the McDuffie Street area, he did a GREAT job of getting to know the kids, getting to know their mothers and being a role model. Kelly got to know the landlords and the tenants. He was honest and fair. They need to find a place for him in the highest echelons at the CPD.
My girl friend’s sister’s boyfriend has been working private security work ever since his expungement order got found at the Richland County Courthouse. It was signed three years ago, but the Clerk’s office said there were some glitches in the computer. Whatever, He makes $8.50 an hour and is happy with that. He gets to carry a great piece, too, by the way. Oh, yeah. He and his posse are looking forward to Santiago coming to work with them.
Just a hunch, but he did a stint a Blackwater over in the sandbox between RCSD and CPD, so if I had to guess I’d assume that’s where he’ll be going back to. I’m sure he can get those toy soldiers to believe his Airborne Ranger stories.
