GROUP UPSET OVER SC LITE GOV’S CONFEDERATE LOYALTIES …
The national NAACP is planning to protest the College of Charleston in response to the school’s consideration of controversial lieutenant governor Glenn McConnell as its new president.
McConnell is one of three finalists for the College of Charleston job – even though the school’s foundation doesn’t want him (and even though a selection committee did not list him among its recommended finalists for the position).
Why is McConnell still in the running, then?
Easy: His South Carolina “Republican” buddies are applying all sorts of improper pressure on the school’s board members.
Local NAACP leaders have been criticizing McConnell’s candidacy for months … for obvious reasons.
“You can’t send a mixed message that we are concerned about diversity, we are trying to recruit minorities, we are doing the kinds of things that our college should be doing in Charleston in terms of making sure there is diversity at the school, and yet consider seriously hiring someone (like McConnell),” Charleston NAACP leader Dot Scott said in January.
Which is sort of what we said last October …
Till now, the outcry over McConnell’s candidacy has been confined to Charleston … although our sources say the NAACP is ready to ramp up its efforts in an attempt to bring national pressure to bear on the school.
Good …
We can’t stand the NAACP (and have said so on repeated occasions). But McConnell is a corrupt, fiscal liberal who has spent three decades screwing over the taxpayers of this state – a record he seems to think warrants a six-figure taxpayer salary from a totally superfluous taxpayer-funded institution.
Any group willing to pistol whip some bad news on his head has our blessing …

I would expect the opposition of the NAACP to actually improve McConnells chances.Nothing arouses SC Republicans like taking a contrary stand to that group.
If you think the Board members have been feeling pressure before, just wait!
McConnell has a constituency of one, Hugh Leatherman.
He will be the next president.
I agree. I am not for McConnell getting the job but I am certainly against the Racist NAACP. So I hope McConnell gets it.
Think about all the black students eager to attend the CoC for the opportunity to be one of Glenda’s slaves.
They can be trained for the part by McConnell’s favorite black pal Robert Ford.
I’m sure the NAACP protests will be as effective as the NAACP boycott of the entire state…the one that is still in effect? Remember the boycott? Neither does anyone else!
Except for the enormous amount of money when 1st. class athletes refused to participate. Response anyone who needed the money and prestige. What are you a martyr to some torn up flag. The things people care about “BAFFLING”.
What first class athletes refused to participate? Even if they did, what are you a martyr from some athlete that doesn’t even know you?
I don’t want to confuse you any further, but you are the martyr who would rather live in the 19th. century and lose money in order to worship a tattered confederate flag.
Toal shoved down our throats, can’t pass the most basic ethics reform, bills to form a stae curency make it to the floor,…..I can certainly see how a leader of this legislative body could fancy himself as the CEO of an educational institution….only in South Carolina.

Dot Scott is the most prejudice person I have ever met. She expects herself and her family to be treated differently because she thinks her position with the Charleston NAACP gives her that right. Most everyone in Charleston regardless of race cannot stand her!
Andrew Card should get the job.
Card withdrew his name.
Well in that case, we can always hope for the La Palma tsunami.

That professional political hack is at least as unqualified as McConnell.
I changed my picture just for the occasion! President Glen we support you. The NAACP does not like you. OH who cares! The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)— An absolutely useless organization and totally racist. What an outdated name!
See.(re my post earlier)
Regardless of motives, the boycott has not been a failure. The organization has helped to keep a lot of money out of SC. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?id=4316170
I knew when I saw “NAACP” in the story’s title that the usual yahoos would be on here posting their tired old slop (Hello Squishy123!!).
How are things at SCSU? Maybe the NAACP should be there complaining.
LOL. Why are you so worried about black people, Squishy? And what would you know about a university, Squishy?
Grand Tango must have had a stroke….or he’s being interviewed by Fox…
Maybe GT is actually Roger Ailes? It would actually explain a lot.
I fully support this protest. Anything the group can do to highlight where we have Confederate sympathizers in government, the better.
I don’t get it, I have direct relatives who fought in the Confederacy and I’m not proud of that. The South started a war against the Federal gov’t. with the primary purpose of keeping slave labor legal. Who could support that?
S.C. needs people in gov’t who will once and for all get rid of that bloody flag from our statehouse grounds and get rid of Confed. Remembrance Day too. It’s a glaring blight on our state and makes no sense in 2014.
Uh oh.Here it comes:
States Rights
The Constitution
Tariffs
Etc etc
We all know the drill .Bring it on boys!
I know right? It’s not even revisionist history by any stretch. The secession documents and Confederate Constitution clearly have language that calls for the preservation of slavery. How could anyone support that?
Eh, the protest is a waste of time. People like that don’t give a shit about being vilified over it and their supporters get boners from it. There isn’t a significant level of opposition that will oust this fuck.
If it makes them feel better, fine, but that’s all it can possibly do.
I’m certain those alleged Confederate States Army ancestors of yours are equally ashamed of you.
Why? Because I don’t support their fight to preserve the forced enslavement of other human beings?
Probably because you are an idiot.
To explain one more time ….
The South seceded in a large part because of slavery (there were other issues. The war was caused by the Northern invasion of the Confederacy. most Yankees, then, COULD NOT GIVE A RAT’S ASS ABOUT SLAVERY. The Confederacy made the classic and oft repeated mistake of figuring that since they wished to depart the union peaceably the average Yankee would have no reason to go to war.
ITBGHO, had the North just let the South go…..
Slavery would have ended before 1900 without all the animosity and bloodshed.
Today, the Confederacy would be in much better shape than the Union.
Blacks living in the Confederacy would have it better than they do now and much better than those in the Union
“Blacks living in the Confederacy would have it better than they do now and much better than those in the Union”
ISCBHO unless you are Black I do not think you are qualified to make such grandiose statements.
TBG was kind of hoping that you might judge TBG’s opinions on the strength of his arguments, as opposed to the color of his skin, Chief.
I do not consider your statement – the one that I was addressing – particularly strong to begin with. The “strength of your argument” to support that statement would be what exactly? And since your statement was specifically about skin color, why should I not consider yours, Chief?
SCBlues,
Valid point about the
“strength” of [TBG’s] argument.
TBG was stating an (unprovable) opinion and kind of hoping you’d cut him some slack.
Saying TBG’s statement was “specifically about skin color” is putting it strongly. TBG believes that the “welfare/warfare state has, and will continue to be, a disaster for most Americans, black, white and other.
While TBG believes that the Federal government (since 1960 or so) has unintentionally done more to destroy the black family than even slavery did, he also recognizes (TBG believes David Boaz pointed this out) that blacks (as individuals) have increased their freedom during this time.
ISCBHO
+1
TBG is flattered.
TBG, say it isn’t so…tell me you are kidding…You sound like you’re serving kosher chicken at a Klan Meeting…
GG….you read stuff into my comment that wasn’t there, amigo.
You are waaaaaay more likely to catch TBG eating FRIED chicken at a Ludacris show than serving kosher chicken at a KKK rally.
My favorite factoid for those believing that slavery was the main issue as to why the North wanted to prevent secession:(per wiki)
“The Proclamation only applied to slaves in Confederate-held lands; it did not apply to those in the four slave states
that were not in rebellion (Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and Missouri,
which were unnamed), nor to Tennessee (also unnamed), and specifically
excluded counties of Virginia soon to form the state of West Virginia.”
So if slavery was the main issue, why were the states not part of the Confederacy exempt from the Emancipation Proclamation?
You’re the Gibberish Man, aren’t you?
You’re the Gibberish Man, aren’t you?
Nah.
To riff a little David Alan Coe…..
TBG didn’t say anything about “foreign oil, SPAWAR, Citadel Cadets or Nancy Mace…
FYI, ISCBHO = “In SCBlues Humble Opinion”, ITBGHO.
I kneel as I apologize for jumping to an incorrect conclusion…
No, They’re ashamed of you “history buff”.
When are you sad turds gonna realize you lost the war?
The CofC board needs the boot. McConnel is not the only finalist who was not on the search committee’s list. I would like to know how Encarnation leapfrogged ahead of other, more qualified candidates. Bad times for Charleston.
Leatherman wants him as Pres. Done deal
Jean Toal promised McConnell Alex Sanders’ support if McConnell supported her to remain as The Most Corrupt Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court in history, Reconstruction Government included. Done deal.
Yay, let’s protest a shitty SC politician! You know, instead of doing something that will actually help advance black people.
Good for the NAACP. The college couldn’t have found a more racist, corrupt, and ego-manaical candidate in the entire country. McConnell embodies racism. Anyone voting for that bastard should not be reappointed.
Taxpayer supported? I call bs. The College of Charleston receives less than 10% of its revenue from the state.
Holderman at USC — queer as a three dollar bill. McConnell at College of Charleston — queer as a seven dollar bill. Holderman went to jail. That’s where McConnell belongs. Please no more queer S.C. college presidents.
That’s right! So let’s select Andre Bauer or Jean Toal or Lindsay Graham….
Why shouldn’t there be an NAACP?
We have the de facto NAAWP – The Republican Party – and their media arm, FOX “News” . . .
We have the de facto NAAWP – The Republican Party…
They are doing a piss poor job, then.
“They are doing a piss poor job, then.”
LOL – we agree!! The Republicans are inept at everything!!!
But don’t blame me, I don’t vote for any of them.
Talk to your fellow White South Carolinians that jump with joy and see stars and get giddy and rush to the ballot box any time they see that “R” after a politician’s name.
A friend told me this good news.
In North Carolina we’ve had our bouts with racism but got beyond it, even electing the black Charlestonian Harvey Gantt as Charlotte’s mayor. (Yes, he’s really black and democrat. So … so shoot him, right?)
The point is, he grew up in Charleston, graduated from Clemson and then got the hell out of the state. Our state public college system is head-and-shoulders above South Carolina’s, and we search out the best minds to admit to our colleges. And we elect relatively non-corrupt legislators and governors that choose the trustees of this public college system.
They in turn hire college presidents who aren’t tinged with racism, bigotry or corruption, who in turn attract the best students and faculty, who stay in our fair state and attract high-tech companies.
It’s all very symbiotic and self-reinforcing — every cog in the state public education wheel is appropriate and non-corrupt.
As a North Carolinian, I certainly hope the Trustees select Senator McConnell as college president. We look forward to receiving the college applications of South Carolina’s best and brightest — and keeping them here.
I like it – The College of Corruption.
Well thought out and well written. Must be accurate. Three North Carolina schools recruited our daughters with offers of scholarships. That’s where they went and likely where they’ll stay. I don’t think the prospect of a life-time politician leading a sate sponsored school would have kept them here. That anyone takes his candidacy seriously is so sad.
Let’s see,…both State college President and a general in civil war regalia…The last person with those two credentials who came to our state was William T. Sherman, past President of LSU. I’ll bet McConnell could do more damage to our state than Sherman did!
Agreed.
At least Sherman was a real “man.”
“Real” soldier.
Cared for his troops.
McConnell isn’t a real “man.”
“Play” soldier (avoided / never served his country).
Cares for himself.
This is totally unnecessary. McConnell is not getting the black vote anyway.
Once McConnell is made president, the brain drain will commence and College of Charleston will be likened to that of SC State University at best and Everest College at worst
Left-leaning Brian Hicks (in his December 29, 2013, Post & Courier column) praised McConnell’s record for getting many more black judges in South Carolina. I wonder how the NAACP feels about that?
Whit is NAACP without someone to point at and yell “RACIST”? More and more irrelevant. Kinda like T-Rav, ya know.
Sweet gold bracelet.
