S.C. WOMAN TRIES TO DROWN KIDS BY DRIVING MINIVAN INTO OCEAN
An “incoherent” South Carolina woman is undergoing a mental evaluation in Volusia County, Florida after attempting to drive her minivan into the ocean near Daytona Beach, Florida.
Inside the vehicle with her at the time? Her three children – aged 10, 9 and 3.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, the unidentified woman’s Honda Odyssey was observed by a beach safety officer driving recklessly down the shoreline – parallel to the ocean. Eventually the car banked to the east into the Atlantic – becoming partially submerged after being struck by a wave. It eventually floated to a stationary position – at which point the three children and their mother were removed by volunteer citizens and paramedics who had arrived on the scene.
The three children are currently in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) – although as we’ve noted previously that’s not necessarily a good thing.
What happened?
Witness Tim Tesseneer of Rutherfordton, N.C. told local television station WESH TV 2 (NBC – Orlando) that the children were pleading for their lives.
“Our mommy’s trying to kill us, please help,” one of the children said, according to Tesseneer.
And the woman?
“She had this look on her face,” Tesseneer said. “I can’t describe it. It was just an awful blank look, like spaced out look.”
Unconfirmed reports indicate the woman many have been pregnant at the time of the incident.
The incident recalled painful memories of another South Carolina woman, Susan Smith, who in 1994 rolled her Mazda Protegé off of a boat ramp into John D. Long Lake near Union, S.C. – killing her 3-year-old and one-year-old boys.
Smith initially claimed she had been carjacked by a black man, but later admitted she let her car roll into the lake as part of an effort to maintain an extramarital affair with a wealthy man who did not want children in his life. Sentenced to life in prison in 1995, Smith is eligible for parole in 2024.
UPDATE: The woman, 32-year-old Ebony Wilkerson of North Charleston, S.C., has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of child abuse.
