Not quite the truth. The auto industry took a beating when management ignored the market and produced big cars nobody wanted anymore (gas hogs). They also made sure to take bonuses so big they made union demands look like chump change. They also failed to modernize existing facilities in order to boost profit margins and artificially inflate stock prices to make Wall Street profiteers happy. More theft and graft in management that with the union workers. Hey, when Boeing was whining about the pay at the Washington plant, the CEOS was collecting pay and benefits that EXCEEDED the entire union payroll of that plant. Not that you’d let a few facts cloud your view…..

I’ve gotta way in on the union bashing that is so rampant in right-wing circles o’er these last few decades.
First of all, yes…it’s true, the unions themselves in several cases are to blame for the loathing they currently enjoy by way of corruption, heavy handedness and greed. There’s no denying that. To those bad unions and those bad apples, I say you got what you deserved and unfortunately in the process have set back the union movement in general. Unions and union members are not “cancers” of the free market in and of themselves. Just like guns or money are not inherently dangerous in and of themselves. Union membership is on the steady decline in this country and has been for ages.
However, you have to look at the other side of the coin too. Unions can be a force for good in the workplace when they seek to exact reasonable concessions from management and conditions. Otherwise, corporates and employers (as is currently the case in S.C. and much of the South) will have the distinct advantage and upper hand in dictating terms to the lowest common denominator.
Capitalism itself is to blame in a way given that the US can’t possilby compete with labor costs in say China or India, no matter how close we cut to the bone…unless we want to regress to a Dickensian society. So companies will generally always seek to maximise profits by shipping jobs overseas. Apart from dirt cheap labor abroad in slave like conditions there are other factors that drive corporations to look elsewhere for production and manufaturing that don’t involve labor unions. These include value of local raw materials, tariffs, trade agreements, tax liabilities, etc.
The real reason the right wants to finally stamp out unions once and for all is not b/c they truly believe unions curtail the so called “free market”, but b/c CEOs and banks want to increase their bottom line even more than they already do if they can get away with treating workers like dirt and paying them even less. It’s like when NFL players (or owners) initiate a work stoppage and people decry how greedy they are when they are already getting paid millions…but it’s because the owners are holding on to millions and millions more off the backs of those guys and the money is out there in the market place for the players to get a fairer share.
Right Wingers have a real fascination for wealthy people.They are absolutely servile in their slavish devotion to them.Any mention of ANYTHING(a tax for instance) that will in any way even almost imperceptibly affect the wealthy will drive a Right Winger figuratively(see Fits) or literally(see Gran. Tango) berserk.

Without getting into the specifics of what tax rates should be for “job creators” (as an aside, that’s the term the right ascribes to rich folk because their focus groups found that the words “rich people” actually drive people more towards the equitable distribution model)…I find it ironic that voters in red states keep electing GOP dominated governor’s mansions and state houses when it’s these very policies and laws that are keeping them poor.

She cares about her family; her familys 7-11 statewide racket is doing quite well this past year, has anybody else noticed? One day, no food on the shelves, hardly a loaf of bread to sell, the next day there was everything they could stand. Take a look, stocked shelves, paraphernalia boo koo, new gas pumps, new signs; amazing. The push starts are all over it!
The South Carolina Retirement System puts to shame any union benefit plan. The SCRS is protected by state law and just hits the taxpayers when it needs more money. The SCRS healthcare plans alone will eventually bankrupt our state once Obamacare fully takes over. So who needs a public sector union with a gig like that.
Once saw a chart showing which states receive more from the federal government than they pay in to the federal government.
It was interesting, vast majority of the “taker’ states were RED states.
The BLUE states, paid much more into the federal treasury than they received.
A GLARING parallel, those BLUE states are the states with the largest private sector UNION jobs.
Probably because employees in the blue states make enough to pay for cost of living without government aid AND pay taxes. Here, we have POLICE on public assistance.

Really, Governor? I would rather my unemployed family members have union jobs than no jobs at all.
Consider this. The majority of manufacturing employees in Germany, Australia, England, Canada, etc – unionized. They enjoy a good standard of living. Their countries enjoy universal health care. They enjoy four weeks of paid vacation. They have fairly stable and good economies.
Now let’s look at South Carolina. Unions are simply banished. Not welcome. Don’t come here. Per capita income – 47th. Education rank – 49th in SAT scores. Non-insured citizens – top 10. Yeah, let’s not taint the water – else someone might actually have a livable wage with benefits that means you don’t have to live on sweet potatoes and collard greens.
Stupid is as stupid does. There’s a reason they filmed Gump in South Carolina – and it ain’t the view.
Okay, so you hate unions… tell us how you feel about monoploies and oligopolies? What counterweight do you suppose will keep them from abusing their workers? Don’t say government because you hate government too.
