EDGEFIELD EPICENTER FOR 4.4 MAGNITUDE QUAKE

The State of South Carolina was rocked by an earthquake shortly after 10:20 p.m. on Friday night – a seismic event felt from the state capital in Columbia, S.C. all the way up to Fountain Inn, Simpsonville and Spartanburg in the Palmetto Upstate (and all the way down to Charleston in the South Carolina Lowcountry).

In Columbia, the tremors lasted only a few seconds … and were hardly earth-shattering.  In fact many who took to social media in the immediate aftermath of the rumbling weren’t exactly sure what had happened.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake registered 4.4 on the Richter Scale – with its epicenter located 12 kilometers west-northwest of Edgefield, S.C.

That’s awfully close to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site …

South Carolina lies on a fault line, and according to earthquake expert Richard Cote is “home to one of the most active earthquake-producing regions in North America.”

The last major quake to strike the region took place on August 31, 1886 in Charleston, S.C. – killing more than 100 people, destroying more than 2,000 buildings and causing between $5-6 million in damage (roughly $150 million in today’s money).

Gotta wonder if the cold weather exacerbated the ground movement, a la Toronto ice quakes last month.

You do realize that once you get down 6-8 feet the ground temperature stabilizes. In SC it’s probably stable 2-3 feet down.

Fortunately Templeton is now pushing the feds to finally do something and is trying to fine them heavily for their interminable delay. Next she should turn her sights on the easily manipulated “facilitators” of delay who she inherited in her own agency.

The newlyweds were consummating their marriage when an earthquake struck. The bride sighed, lost in love. The groom said, “I have to warn you, honey, it won’t always be this good.”

A crack in the earth said to another, “Don’t look at me. It’s not my fault.”

A tremor rumbled through a nightclub. One dancer called out. “More bass!”

A wino was shaken awake by a vigorous earthquake. He turned to his buddy and said, “I don’t remember drinking that!”

Reply
shifty henry February 15, 2014 at 9:04 am

Anyone remember the two quakes centered in Harbison State Forest? The first tremor was about 8:15 am and the second tremor was about 3:15 pm. The first tremor shook my second floor apartment, and I thought that a car had jumped the sidewalk and hit the building, which was about 2 miles from the epicenter. The second tremor occured while I was getting acquainted with a new lady friend who was living just 1/5 of a mile away across Broad River Road. We didn’t even notice the quake.

Anyway, when his electricity was restored after being AWOL for 49 hours TBG leapt for joy.
