EX-GAMECOCK QUARTERBACK KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE TATER HATERS …

Former University of South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw was booed during an appearance at a Christian concert in Greenville, S.C. – a rude reception he responded to with a “high five” (a.k.a. “five-bomb“).

Shaw, a devout Christian, was introduced at Friday night’s Winter Jam 2014 event – which took place at Greenville’s Bon Secours Wellness Arena (formerly Bi-Lo Center). As the boos rained down from the audience – which was clearly comprised of mostly Clemson University fans – Shaw “threw up the five,” according to one witness.

For those of you who don’t follow football in the Palmetto State, that’s a reference to the five consecutive wins Shaw’s Gamecocks have notched over Clemson …

Shaw completed 14 of 26 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown against Clemson in last year’s game. He also ran for 94 yards and another score.

In 2011, Shaw connected on 14 of 20 throws for three touchdowns – and added another 117 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Shaw was injured for South Carolina’s 2012 game against Clemson, but the Gamecocks won anyway on the strength of backup quarterback Dylan Thompson’s 310-yard, three-touchdown performance.

Shaw is one of five former Gamecocks invited to attend this month’s NFL combine in Indianapolis in anticipation of the upcoming NFL draft.  He is currently rated among the top dozen or so available signal-callers.

You and/or Sic Willie personally IDed all those who booed and verified that they were Clemson fans, is that correct? Or are you, as Sic Willie has done, based your statements on the hearsay evidence of one “witness”?

There’s too many USuCk fans in Greenville and Spartanburg. I encounter them almost every day. Most are missing teeth and wear sweats that don’t cover the rolls of fat peaking from their spare tires.

I saw one last week with a tat on her left ass-cheek. It read “Andre.”

Mike at the Beach February 9, 2014 at 2:11 am

C’mon man, I feel ya on the whole CU – USC thing, but what are the odds that a Greenville crowd just spontaneously booed Shaw for some other reason? I bet Boyd would get booed in Cola, too. That just wasn’t this story. It’s true in physics, statistics, economics, problem solving, and criminal investigations: the simplest theory is usually the correct one (see Occam’s razor for additional info, but trust me on this one).

Alas, TBG can’t take credit for it.

That would go to Steve Sailer who also came up with “Invade the World, Invite the World, In Hock to the World”. and others.

CNSYD February 9, 2014 at 11:08 am

The purposes of Sic Willie writing this “story” were two fold. First and foremost he sees “5 bomb” everywhere and in everything, no matter how sophomoric. He never sees 65-42-4. Secondly, he knew that it would invoke comments and increase “hits” therefore giving him “bragging rights” with advertisers. News value, a topic of which Sic Willie has little if any interest, was not considered. Also, as a paragon of journalistic excellence, Sic Willie bases his “story” on the hearsay “evidence” of one “witness”.

I don’t know who booed Shaw, assuming it all happened as Sic Willie described it, nor do I know why. In what context was Shaw introduced? Details Sic Willie either intentionally ignores or is too lazy to investigate. Context is important. An introduction of “devout Christian and QB of USC” would probably evoke some boos for the latter part. Contrast that with “devout Christian and QB of USC who has beaten Clemson the last 5 years in a row” would evoke an entirely different response.

Reply
Mike at the Beach February 9, 2014 at 11:53 am

Again, mi amigo, I feel ya. Yet, you make my point, again.
Your theory: We don’t know the full identities of the “booers” so we can’t possibly know their motivations. Maybe Connor was tackily introduced (something akin to “Ladies and rednecks…Mr. Connor Shaw, who’s managed to kick Klempsun’s asses for five consecutive years!” Will should have investigated the story more fully (hell, he doesn’t much investigate real news stories, man). Somehow the overall USC-CU record gets thrown in to you theory, but I’m not sure how to work that since it basically appears to be some type of coping mechanism. Will may have hallucinated the “5-bomb,” which he sees everywhere. Therefore, no firm theory can be made without additional information and investigation.
My theory: Football fixated rednecks abound in both CU and USC fan bases. The “incident” occurred deep in CU territory, where Connor Shaw epitomizes the anomaly of USC’s recent winning streak. Therefore, most likely, tacky Clemson rednecks (ostensibly Christian ones, at that) booed him for that reason.
See? Fewer assumptions, simpler assumptions. Cleaner. Occam says (at a very high level of statistical confidence) that I’m right, and he was “wicked smot,” bro. We’re thinking about this way too much. Peace!

Then, suddenly, all the rednecks in the state will stop their irrational hate of other rednecks who like a different color shirt on their football team. Oh, wait a minute, no…they’ll just keep reaching further and further back, and if that ever runs out on them, I’m not sure that the CU collective psyche could survive. Lighten up taters! CNSYD February 9, 2014 at 1:56 pm

TBG, Danny essentially fired himself. You do not get on a stage in front of your bosses (AD and President) and with members of the BOT in the audience and call them out before a gathering of IPTAY members. It matters not whether you are right or not, insubordination will get you fired every time. I was at that meeting so I know what occurred.

4th Generation February 9, 2014 at 4:34 pm

Sadly, it didn’t happen just once either. Otherwise, it may have been recoverable.

That episode of impertinence and insubordination was one of the dumbest career decisions I’ve ever witnessed. Even most of his closest advisers counseled him against that silliness.

TontoBubbaGoldstein February 9, 2014 at 5:24 pm

@ CNSYD & 4th Generation

“It matters not whether you are right or not, insubordination will get you fired every time.”

Agreed, insubordination will get you fired every time.

What was Danny Ford “calling them out” for?

TBG vaguely remembers something about Danny advocating for/against a special (learning?) facility being proposed for the football players…or was it about the NCAA investigation/sanctions…or something else.

TBG’s (rather hazy and lacking in details) recollection was that some of the PTBs at Clemson were concerned about Clemson’s “image”.

TBG’s (admittedly rather simplistic) philosophy was/is that a football coach is paid to coach football and win games, which Danny Ford did rather well. It always seemed to TBG that many of the infractions from the first probation occurred on Charley Pell’s watch and the second go round produced mostly “tickey tack” violations.

From your comments, TBG assumes that DF’s beef was with the AD and President and he (wrongly) assumed that IPTAY would, or could have his back….

Would love some more details from y’all who were there.

4th Generation February 9, 2014 at 7:15 pm

The spark that ignited the fire was Ford’s insistence on going forward with building a new dorm for football with supporting facilities. Iptay was willing to fund; money was not an object.

However, timing was bad. The University and Max Lennon had a priority list of wants and needs as well. The State was under a bit of budget distress and the negative PR of a new athletic dorm was just a bridge too far regardless of funding sourcing. Ford just didn’t get his way with his project and wouldn’t hear of it.

In order to fully grasp the circumstance, one must recall President Bill Atchley’s firing in 1985 and that of AD Bill McClellan under the pressure of NCAA investigative matters which Ford skirted whether rightly or wrongly (and I don’t know). The Board simply could not allow any room for error in the squabble as a result of the carryover caution.

Although Lennon himself was under some duress from multiple sources including some of the BOT for inept handling of the issue as some thought it to be, the reputation of the Universtiy was on the line: Was the Head Coach going to run the University or was the President? Danny did not fully appreciate or understand the politics of the situation and his weak position under circumstances then present.

The BOT, rightfully, understood the situation as untenable. Overtures were made back and forth among powers that be on both sides of the issue to cool the situation. As I indicated earlier, even most of Ford’s advisers thought it to be foolish on his part and so advised him. One must remember that Danny was still a relatively young person to whom success had come fairly quickly. He wasn’t bullet-proof, however.

The problem was clearly insubordination with little if anything to do with other issues that were already in the past but residually present under the surface. It was not a popular call and the BOT caught massive grief from Clemson fanatics and students. It’s a chapter best forgotten but a lesson well learned by all, not the least of which would be Danny.

Danny was a great coach and a good man, but chose the time of battle unwisely. He could have had anything he wanted the next year or year after and in the future.

The fact that his formal reunion with Clemson was so long in coming speaks volumes to me in how seriously that Board and successive Boards regarded the matter.

I’m glad we all finally made up.

TontoBubbaGoldstein February 9, 2014 at 8:42 pm

@ 4th Generation

Thanks for your reply.

TBG was one of those “fanatics and students” way back when. (Still a Clemson fanatic!)

4th Generation February 9, 2014 at 8:53 pm

Yeah, Frank Howard told me all about you. Hahahaha!

CNSYD February 9, 2014 at 8:51 pm

I generally concur with what 4th generation has stated. I differ a little on the situation involving Atchley and McCellan. It was the result of an escalating peeing contest between the two men which started over a minor item. The BOT grew tired of it and solved it by firing both of them.

Interestingly athletic dorms were banned by the NCAA a few years later which, if Danny had “won”, would have created a white elephant building.

i attended USC and went to Clemson to see the games. Both schools are great in their unique ways. The Clemson students actually treated us well and we partied with them that weekend. Greenville is awesome. I find myself routing for Clemson when USC isn’t playing.

Seriously, this was a Christian concert! Clem5sux fans, REALLY! Connor Shaw is a devout Christian, he wasn’t there with a football in his hand. He is a special young man, who has never done anything personally to any of you. Why would you boo another Christian. Oh, wait, I forgot, you also boo players who are hurt. So, now it makes sense, but not really. This was disgusting and ignorant. Of course, this is the same fan base that laughed at suicide, made a sign with Lattimore’s legs spinning, and wish constantly, out loud and in writing that Clowney would break both his legs. Why should anyone expect anything different? Ya’ll should be ashamed of yourselves, this was clemsoning at it’s worse. I hate to see what y’all do at church.

Sakerlina beating Clemson in football is a HERESY.

Deal with it.

Ya’ll have BigT/GrandTango. We don’t.

I presume that “sux” is some sort of Christian expression. Taken from scripture I am sure.

5 years means Conner Shaw never experienced a loss against Clemson while on the team, thus the extreme levels of butthurt.

I would think at a Christian Concert most people would be thinking about love, piece and enjoyment. A Little more class please!

Connor Shaw should remember what happened to Tim Tebow before he starts wearing his religion on his sleeve. The NFL doesn’t want another Tebow problem.

Let’s calm down and just be thankful that one of Spurrier’s players can actually count. So it took a few years…that’s progress!!!
