On Thursday, January 23, 2014 the Executive Committee of the Sumter County Republican Party unanimously passed a Resolution to Reject the Common Core Curriculum in South Carolina. We want to make it clear to the SC Legislature, as well as the community-at-large, that we value the quality of the education of all our children in the great state of SC, as well as our right to choose and participate in our children’s education, and believe the Common Core Curriculum is antithetical to these rights and beliefs.

The resolution, in its entirety, follows:

RESOLUTION TO REJECT THE COMMON CORE CURRICULUM

WHEREAS, in 2010 officials in the Executive Branch committed our state to participation in the Common Core State Standards Initiative through the federal Race to the Top grant application; and

WHEREAS, this participation required our state to adopt the Common Core standards in K-12 English language arts and mathematics, and to commit to implementing the national SMARTER Balanced (SBAC) assessments, all without legislative oversight and without public input; and

WHEREAS, adoption of Common Core obliterates South Carolina’s constitutional autonomy over education in English language arts and mathematics, placing control in the hands of the federal government and unaccountable private interests in Washington, DC; and

WHEREAS, the Common Core standards have been evaluated by experts as mediocre at best, and based on questionable philosophies; and

WHEREAS, the Common Core standards will inevitably lead to a national curriculum, in violation of three federal statutes; and

WHEREAS, the Common Core scheme will be expanded to include national standards and curriculum in science, social studies, and other subjects; and

WHEREAS, neither the Common Core standards nor the SBAC assessments were ever piloted to determine their effectiveness; and

WHEREAS, both the Common Core standards and the SBAC tests will impose an enormous unfunded mandate on our state and our local school districts; and WHEREAS, Common Core is part of a national scheme that includes collection and sharing of massive amounts of personal student and teacher data;

THEREFORE, the Sumter County Republican Party hereby resolves that our state leaders should: “Withdraw our state from the Common Core State Standards Initiative; Withdraw our state from the SBAC assessment scheme, and any other testing aligned with the Common Core standards; Prohibit all state officials from entering into any agreement that cedes any measure of control over South Carolina education to entities outside the state and ensure that all content standards and curriculum decisions are adopted through a transparent state-wide process fully accountable to the citizens of South Carolina; and Prohibit the collection of personal student data for any non-educational purpose, and the sharing of personal data except with schools or education agencies within the state.”

Organized opposition to Common Core started in Texas with small right-wing groups which want to replace science with creationism and history with mythology. I support Common Core as an effort to keep the right-wing fundamentalist Christians out of public education. Don’t be deluded, much of the attack on Common Core is simply another front in the Republican war on public education.

Thought all the Republican children in Sumter went to Wilson Hall. Why should the Pub Exec. Committee care about Common Core?

Common core is yet another “gubamint can do it better program”. Their record is like .0000000000000391 for success so why not try this program to!

Every state should be able to arrange the keys on their keyboards the way they want to – including the number keys…. wait! make that each county!

If that’s what floats your boat but why involve the state…that’s what the last part of that phrase is all about set your computer up any way ya want.

The keyboard manufacturer puts the keys on the keyboard, and the firmware manufacturer translates the binary codes into characters.

If those items are made in different states or countries, shouldn’t they be different just to show that the monolithic state isn’t dictating reality to the states?

We are the Borg, you will be assimilated, resistance is futile.
Look over on the left or right of your screen, find settings, keyboard and have at ‘er.

The placement of the keys on the keyboard?

A state regulated, political definition of the “best” way?

This is representative of our current public school education standards soon to be lowered by Common Core:

This is representative of what the International Baccalaureate Degree program for students 3-19 has been doing for our education system since 1968.

Pairing our nationally certified teachers with the the IBO standards and certifications will teach the next generation with a world class education.

So common core is as important as the round earth concept?

lmao!

So much faith in another 5 year plan by government designed to fix everything. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

MyDaddyIsRich January 27, 2014 at 6:19 pm

It is not designed to fix everything. It is to provide a basic common core. Go find another conspiracy to freak out about.

Forest Hump January 27, 2014 at 10:19 pm

Maybe some prayer beads will help with this next 5 year plan?

What conspiracy are you referring to by the way? Conspiracy of the stupid? You really pulled that out of your ass.

Maybe you are referring to your proposed conspiracy of flat Earthers taking over public education?

lol, you’re such a moron.
