WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

For a moment we thought we’d struck internet gold when a reader forwarded us a link to a story about a new saloon that includes its own firing range.  Then we realized the saloon in question is located in South Dakota, not South Carolina.

Still, it’s a pretty funny juxtaposition the Deadwood Guns complex has got going on with its new Bullets and Beers Saloon …

“It’s all the things I like: alcohol, tobacco and firearms,” the soon-to-be former FBI agent masterminding this concept told The Associated Press.

Nice …

Of course there’s a catch … while the Saloon’s simulated firing ranges would be available to any patron, “no one shoots or handles a real gun unless they can blow a 0.00 on a Breathalyzer.”

Awwwww … where’s the fun in that, right?

Anyway, South Dakota’s novel idea comes as South Carolina has proposed amending its laws to permit Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) holders to legally carry firearms in restaurants (you know, assuming gun-loving S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s administration gets its act together and issues their permits).

This website has been rabid in support of the Second Amendment – going so far as to encourage civil disobedience of any gun law which imposes upon its protections (including South Dakota’s law banning gun owners from carrying their weapons into any establishment which derives more than fifty percent of its revenue from alcohol sales).

Of course no matter how many precautions a “Bullets and Beers” saloon may take, we suspect that’s a recipe that could lead to some real life “Wild West” violence in short order.

In other words, enter at your own risk …

Just make them rent the guns in addition to the zero BAC. They can’t hold a gun unless verified sober, and when they go to drink afterwards, they give it back and it is no longer on their person, period.

If that’s how they do it I see nothing wrong at all.

Smirks January 17, 2014 at 10:14 am

Interesting concept. I’d go just to see drunk people trying to hit targets with a fake gun at least.

Your comment reminds me of myself around 10 years ago(plus). I used to ride my bike up occasionally to someplace called the “Dragon’s Tail” in Deals Gap, NC.

318 curves in 11 miles. I went to both ride it on a Sunday mornings and watch other freaks wreck on it.

Then it occurred to me one day, “Huh, they could wreck into me while I’m riding on it.” (Yea, I know, not too smart-but being sane doesn’t always lead to an interesting life)

Haven’t been back since. (but rode on racetracks for a while after that, which is actually much safer)

If you ever go, you know you’re there when you see a big tree covered with pieces of wrecked motorcycles fastened to it’s base. For most sane people(which wasn’t me in my younger days), you would think that would be enough to discourage.

Never rode that trail myself, but friends have told me about their rides. The common thread in their experiences, as I remember, is the combination of excitement, fun, enjoyment, with the elements of danger and fear. Most of them wished around the half-way mile that they had never started – but it was the point of no return. A few of them mentioned counting the curves – but that ended in a hurry.

Or,they can take their guns into movie theaters and shoot and kill someone who throws dangerous popcorn at them…….Or, they could use their guns for hunting and leave them out of public places.

Just think about how many people could have been saved if just one person in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting was armed(other than the shooter).

Kel January 17, 2014 at 1:44 pm

Likely, none. He was covered from head to toe in military grade body armor. His only vulnerable spot was his neck. If there was a shooter other than James Holmes, that shooter would be among the deceased or injured, too

Same ol' Same ol' January 17, 2014 at 4:55 pm

Not so fast there, hoss. Getting shot close range with almost anything will make the person have a long pause, for sure. The armor will keep him from getting killed, but it won’t keep his ass off the floor, likely breaking a rib, or two in the process. It doesn’t make a person Ironman. There be a lot o’ energy in them thar bullets.

Kel January 20, 2014 at 6:53 pm

Mind you this guy was armored and in a dark movie theater shooting indiscriminately at whomever.

CorruptionInColumbia January 17, 2014 at 7:34 pm

Seems I recall reading that a lot of that stuff he was wearing was the costume-grade stuff you can buy in a lot of catalogs which has no ballistic protection at all. Even with a full SWAT-grade outfitting of ballistic armor, there are gaps and holes where a well-placed shot will incapacitate or kill the wearer.

Every year, the rolls are full of cops who died while on duty and wearing their obligatory medieval torture devices (aka body armor), when the round used was more potent than the armor was rated to stop, they were shot in the head or neck, were shot under the arms where no protection is afforded, or below the armor.

Real world and fantasyland work two different ways.

Kel January 20, 2014 at 6:56 pm

If you’re reading the Blaze, that’s understandable. James Holmes was very vulnerable in that he had on so much armor he had trouble moving in the theater. I go to the range often, but I don’t think I’m a sharp enough shooter to shoot someone in the neck, armpit or head, for that matter, in a dark movie theater. How’s the weather in fantasy land?

The Colonel January 19, 2014 at 11:42 am

He wasn’t covered from head to toe in “military grade” body armor – see my post above, there is no practical frontal head face armor available today. Even in the Army body armor I wear and it’s about as good as it gets, you’re still vulnerable from the neck to the brow, at the thighs and in the under arm area. The more you wear the greater the tunnel vision you have and the more vulnerable you are to precision shooting. Without a SAPI plate, no body armor is truly bullet proof.
We know Holmes was wearing a Blackhawk “assault vest” because they found the receipt for it. He also had a “gas mask”, it was found on the street outside the theater and he was carrying tear gas grenades. The quality and nature of the rest of his “head to toe armor” is speculative. A .357 Sig and higher velocity .40 Smiths FMJs will punch holes in almost any readily available armor not backed up by SAPI plates at close range – that’s why the Secret Service and the FBI uses it

Reply
Kel January 20, 2014 at 6:50 pm

Head to toe, in that context, is a figure of speech. I know he wasn’t wearing any facial guard beyond that of the gas mask, but he was heavily armored for a civilian and well armed. Anyone defending the innocent would have likely been injured or killed. You need no “precision” when shooting indiscriminately into a crowd as Holmes did.

The Colonel January 21, 2014 at 3:16 am

Your assessment – “He was covered from head to toe in military grade body armor. His only vulnerable spot was his neck.”

Even a well armored individual is vulnerable at the neck, face and upper thighs and biceps/underarm area. A hit in any of
the areas can readily disable if not outright kill an attacker within seconds. The POS in question fired for approximately 2 minutes.

Can the average “CWP gun carrier” make that shot in a darkened theater from 25 yards? Probably not – but I know many who could.

Your assertion – ”… he was … well armed….

That statement is partly true “heavily armed” would be more accurate. His ridiculous 100 round magazine jammed before he was able to fire many rounds as evidenced by the relatively few deaths and the fact that he quickly switched to the shotgun and pistols he carried. The spread of the buck shot accounted for many of the wounds. But even a large capacity riot gun holds no more than 8 rounds. At either of those guns changes he was vulnerable – even to a physical assault.

Would returned fire have made Holmes less likely to have killed 12 and wounded 70. Absolutely.

Not everyone has the willingness, skill or ability to fight back – let’s not make it illegal/impossible for those of us who do.

Godslayer January 17, 2014 at 1:45 pm

The correct answer is “None.” Holmes was wearing body armor and had multiple automatic weapons. Anyone who fired at him would have drawn a deluge of automatic fire. But don’t let the facts get in the way of your little boy hero fantasies.

Colonel, I very suprised you’ve never seen ballistically rated helmets and other such face and head gear. they were all over the news when the LA robbery occurred over a decade ago?

The Colonel January 19, 2014 at 3:47 am

I wear a ballistic helmet all the time it’s part of the PASGT (Personal Armor System Ground Troops) that is standard in the Army. The helmets we call “Kevlars”.or “Aches” (the helmet itself is called the Advanced Combat Helmet – ACH (pronounced “h”) and they’re made of Kevlar)
Funny thing though they only cover the top and back of my head. We have a ballistic face mask but it’s for riots – it won’t stop a bullet and they’re impractical as hell for anything but protection from rock throwers.
Now on the ’97 North Hollywood Angeles Shootout which I assume you’re referring to. One of the two robbers had created “full” body armor from old ballistic vests. What they didn’t have were bullet proof face guards or helmets – all they were wearing was ski masks. The LAPD, trained to shoot “center mass”, kept shooting the two in the chest. Only one robber had the full coverage – the other just wore a vest.
The police were so out gunned that they were never able to effectively engage their targets – a training problem, not a gun problem. They wound up raiding a local gun store for long guns and have since added long guns to many cruisers. One of the two robbers shot himself in the head, the other bled to death from multiple ricochet wounds.
I’ve taught “two in the face” shooting to my Soldiers for the last 20 years – since I realized how effective good body armor is. in close combat it’s doable every time and with the sights we now use on the M4/M16 it’s also possible from a distance.

this is nits January 18, 2014 at 4:43 pm

AND the last movie theatre shooting I am aware of was in Florida where a “highly” trained former police captain shot some one for texting during the movie. Defenders of the retired captians actions(the far right wing of the tea party) are quick to point out that the texter said something disrepsectful to the captain in response to his request of the pesron to quit texting and THAT was why he was ‘forced’ to shoot the texter and his wife. now they want the guns in bars. hahahha no one ever does/says anything disrespectful to each other in bars. I think supporters of this bill are just hankering to say ‘yes – and they deserve to be shot for it….by me!’

Truth January 19, 2014 at 11:43 am

Wrong in so many ways…. NO “automatic” weapons. Besides, you can only use one at a time. Body armor is not magic. Shoot someone in the chestplate, and they still go down because it hurts A LOT. Shoot them a couple times in the armor, they are out of the fight (and quite possibly dead from blunt trauma). You have NO CLUE what the facts ARE. Oh, and I wore body armor and carried a gun for 20 years. I know a little something about it (unlike you).

MmmmHmmm January 17, 2014 at 1:52 pm

Well, I can hit a face with routine at 25 yards with my dinky 9mm. I’d much rather have a gun to try to stop him from shooting me than be a pussy like you two and roll around on the ground behind chairs hoping he doesn’t stop by and put a couple in me.

I’m quite sure this kid would have at least been slowed if someone had been shooting back.

You’ll never eliminate guns from the world, so if you two would like to try and live in a Kumbaya fantasy world of a peaceful/gun free world, I suppose that’s your prerogative.

There doesn’t seem to be any limits to what can be legislated, so don’t let reality interfere with you trying to force on everyone else as that seems to be the trend lately anyway.

Why is FITS avoiding the news. Is it too painful for him to admit, his little run is OVER…just as it got stared…and the beginning of the end has started for Dabo…

If SC had even a hint of something this devastating FITS would $#!* all over himself, run to the key board and announce the doom w/ mountaintop-screaming zeal..Yet now, he lays silent…

Tater fans should be SCARED to death of Morris’ departure…and if he is not getting the Vandy job, it’s BIG news because the Dude is whoring himself like it’s New Orleans at Mardi Gras,…and no one will hire him. His wanting out so badly is ALARMING…

Would be a gold mine if FITS had even half a brain, and some ability… But FITS lacks the ability to correctly analyze that…but he will mention Clemson as an NC contender….

Actually, it did end well. As I seem to recall reading, the good guys won that one. Also, I don’t think that shootout had much at all to do with guns being carried in bars as much as it was to do with a power struggle between two factions that were hostile towards each other.

A man walked into a bar and sat down. There didn’t seem to be a bartender. After a few moments, from the door at the back of the bar, a horse came out. Tying an apron around its waist, the horse asked the man if he wanted a drink. The man stared. The horse asked, “Why are you staring? Didn’t you ever see a horse before?” The man answered, “Well, I didn’t think the

The waitress returned a few minutes later with their orders and asked, “All

If you’re drinking, you’ll need to carry automatic weapons to make up for the loss of accuracy.

Also, always remember when you are drinking doubles – if you are seeing double, shoot the one in the middle.
