Rolling back the clock (and causing us to momentarily break out of our grunge/ alt-rock phase), here’s Australian-based rockers INXS with their 1987 hit “New Sensation.”
Off of the band’s multi-platinum album Kick, “New Sensation” is one of the song’s Atlantic record executives initially rejected (believing it sounded too much like “black radio” music).
Whatever sort of music it sounded like, critics loved it – with Kick netting the band four Top 10 singles.
While INXS continued to perform until 2012, for all intents and purposes the band died on November 22, 1997 when lead singer Michael Hutchence committed suicide in a Sydney, Australia hotel room. At the time of his death Hutchence was romantically involved with Paula Yates, ex-wife of Live Aid organizer Bob Geldof – who herself would die three years later of a heroin overdose.
U2’s Bono wrote the lyrics to the song “Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” about Hutchence’s battle with depression.
