COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 7, 2014) – The University of South Carolina football team finished fourth in the final Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls, it was announced today. It marked the highest postseason ranking in school history.

Florida State (14-0) received every first place vote in both polls, finishing just ahead of Auburn (12-2). Big Ten Champion Michigan State (13-1) placed third, with the Gamecocks (11-2) and Missouri (12-2) rounding out the top 5 in both polls.

“Being ranked No. 4 in both major polls is an honor for the University of South Carolina and for our football program,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “Thanks to the players for achieving another 11-2 record. Thanks also to the coaches, the support staff and our fans for their contributions. Also thanks to the voters for thinking so highly of us. We are very appreciative and thankful for being the highest–ranked team in school history and hope to do better next year.”

This is the ninth time that Carolina has finished the season ranked in the final Associated Press poll and the third-straight top-10 finish. Here are Carolina’s postseason A.P. rankings: 1958 (13), 1984 (11), 1987 (15); 2000 (19); 2001 (13); 2010 (22); 2011 (9); 2012 (8); 2013 (4).

Here are a few highlights of the 2013 Carolina Football season:

• South Carolina is one of only three schools, joining Alabama and Oregon, to finish in the A.P. top 10 in each of the last three seasons.

• South Carolina defeated six teams that won its bowl game: Clemson (Orange), UCF (Fiesta), Missouri (Cotton), North Carolina (Belk), Mississippi State (Liberty) and Vanderbilt (BBVA Compass).

• South Carolina posted wins over five teams that finished in the top 25 (Missouri – 5/5; Clemson – 8/7; UCF – 10/12; Wisconsin – 22/21; and Vanderbilt – 24/23) with the UCF and Missouri games coming on the road and the Wisconsin win at a neutral site.

• South Carolina finished the season with six-consecutive wins, including three against ranked opponents (Missouri, Clemson and Wisconsin).

• South Carolina was the only team to have two wins over BCS teams (Clemson and UCF) prior to the bowl games.

• South Carolina has an 18-game home winning streak, the longest current streak in the nation.

• South Carolina has been ranked in the AP Top 25 for 64 consecutive weeks, tying Stanford for the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.

• South Carolina is one of only five schools, joining Alabama, Oregon, Stanford and Northern Illinois, to win 11 games in each of the last three seasons.

• South Carolina has won three-straight New Year’s Day bowl games, defeating Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin.

The Gamecocks will open the 2014 season on Thursday, August 28, when they host Texas A&M at Williams-Brice Stadium. Fans can place a deposit on 2014 Gamecock season football tickets for just $100. Go to gamecocksonline.com/tickets or call 803-777-4274.

You forgot one; your cocks are also the only top 10 team to lose to an unranked team.

Also, before you try to spin last night’s National Championship loss into some some sort of victory for your beloved SCUm coots, please note that the rest of the SEC isn’t quite as enamored with SCUm as SCUm is with the SEC. So save it. You didn’t, don’t and won’t have a dog in the fight.

You cocks have little brother syndrome. Face it, you’re the weird kid that plays D&D. We don’t need your “support” nor do we want it. Y’all are just strange. I’ve never seen a fanbase so deluded.

When you get a chance, please have an adult translate for you. I don’t read Ampersandese. Can you find someone with at least an 8th grade education that can actually type?

English, motherfucker. Do you speak it? .

It was a good game and memorable season. Especially after last year. THAT was rough.

See y’all in God’s country October 25th.

Oklahoma lost to an unranked Texas. Oregon lost to an unranked Arizona. But let’s not let facts get in the way of a crazy rant.

isn’t it just like a Clemson fan to act like someone else and still not get his facts right?

Reply

And this has what to do with sc living vicariously through the TOP of the conference?

Reply
AsianSuperfly January 7, 2014 at 2:40 pm

Since your crazy rant starts off with something akin to the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor (that S Carolina was the only top 10 team to lose to an unranked team), it basically says all it needs to about the writer and the validity of his/her opinion.
Did you forget what you wrote already?

I must’ve missed the list of highlights that Will wrote about Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon and Arizona so I didn’t feel the need to discuss their wins and/or losses.

I’m sorry; I just thought Will was talking about the cockles(s).

If we’re the weird kid that plays D&D, that must make Clemson the angry fat kid trolling online forums.

it appears this Clem5on fan could say anything himself, so he tried to post as LSU, then someone pointed out USC also was higher ranked than LSU so he had to act as an Auburn fan. He can even get it right. the SCUm joke would have only worked if it were SCU and not USC. Silly tater. High 5 on our top 4 finish.

Then why were the Auburn fans yelling SEC at the game last night before they choked? I mean who the hell gives up a 50 yard pass in the final seconds of a game. You are as overrated as your conference is. You were nothing but lucky to be there, you know the 2 fluke plays, and now you are going to rag on another team? Someone damn shot the eagle.

Reply
Elfego January 7, 2014 at 12:37 pm

I was pulling for Auburn last night but as a matter of fact their luck got them there. Georgia and Alabama both should have beat them. Give them credit their coached did a great job with a little help but regardless of what one thinks luck is always a factor!

Reply
WarEagle January 7, 2014 at 12:57 pm

I have no idea…why were FSU fans yelling “ACC”??? We had two lucky wins this season and one unlucky loss. BUT, my Tigers were still playing January 6th. What were your tigers up to?

“Hypothetically”, say one team loses in the National Championship, on a neutral field by…say…3 points and another team loses, at HOME by…THIRTY-SEVEN POINTS. Which team would be overrated???

Yep. I thought so.

As I said on the other thread you plolluted I didn’t really care about last night’s game but now I’m glad that Auburn choked.

Reply
WarEagle January 7, 2014 at 1:19 pm

Oh crap, I “plolluted” it? Don’t you have spell check on your Commodore Vic20 or do you think that’s really a word?

Did we choke? Yep. But, like ***I*** said…we played in the Rose Bowl last night. For the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (surely you’ve heard of it). We are SEC Champions (how’d that ‘attempt’ work out for you?).

YOU are a the MOST deluded fanbase in [at least] the SEC.

Reply
Original Good Old Boy January 7, 2014 at 3:42 pm

Yep. Your team choked and you are so bitter about it that you spend the next day trying to poke the fans of a team you didn’t even play this year. Congrats on being butt hurt. And by the way, those that make subject-verb disagreement errors shouldn’t make fun of someone else’s typo. You probably have no clue what I’m talking about but at least take a few minutes to try and figure it out.

Reply
WarEagle January 7, 2014 at 10:23 pm

I’m not bitter. Due to my job, I have to live around you cocks in this hellhole of a “city”.

While I’m not happy about the loss, we had a damn good season. Especially when you consider last year.

I wouldn’t call it “butt hurt” but, then again, I’m not a cock so I’ve yet to have my ass reamed, on or off the field so I don’t know what that’s like. Nor do I have any desire to do so. I defer to your obvious many experiences. No, I don’t want to hear about them.

W.J.Smith January 8, 2014 at 10:22 am

I wouldn’t blame everyone else for you having to live in Irmo

WarEagle January 8, 2014 at 12:28 pm

I’m not sure I blamed anyone. I’ve just been here for a few months for a project. Thank God. The good thing is that I only have to live in the concrete hell hole that is Columbia for a couple of more months.

W.J.Smith January 8, 2014 at 4:31 pm

Congratulations to both Clemson and the Gamecocks. Both teams did a great job to bolster football in this state.

I am a bit concerned for both teams headed into the 2014 season. Both programs lost a gambit of talent to the NFL draft. I can only hope both programs will return to Top 10 status at the end of next season and maintain the fact that the state of South Carolina is a powerhouse in college football.

It’s a famous quote by Ronald Reagan. He was a president you see; you’ll probably have to Google him, you ignorant liberal tater-tot. You’d be more comfortable going to live in a blue state I think… where they play your brand of football. Most people don’t know which state Clemson’s in anyhow.
