Friends,

It has been a pleasure serving as your State Treasurer over the past three years.  With another year upon us, I would like to take a moment to reflect on some of our accomplishments. Since taking office, the State Treasurer’s Office has instituted a number of reforms. Here are a few of our successes:

  • We completed a GAAP Financial Audit – the first to be done since 1988
  • We conducted the first Performance Audit in the history of the State Treasurer’s Office
  • We have revamped our IT security to better protect your money and personal information
  • We refinanced over $1 billion in bonds, saving the state $164 million dollars
  • We upgraded our Unclaimed Property system, and returned over $37 million to their rightful owners
  • We have been fighting the most expensive pension investment plan in the country, the SC Retirement System Investment Commission, which pays the highest fees in the country while its returns are in the bottom 20%!

My promise to you is to continue to protect your money. I am honored to serve the wonderful people of South Carolina as your State Treasurer. With a new year on the horizon, I would like to wish you and your family a prosperous 2014!

Be Well,

loftis sig

“donating $25 or more……a free “I Stand With Curt” bumper sticker and…..koozie”

How about $12.50 for a “I Sit With Curt” sticker and forget the koozie – I drink fast –

The only way I could see giving Curtis a contribution would be if it were for a ticket for him to leave South Carolina. He might be the worst State Treasurer in the country.

I am not Hugh Leatherman. I am not even in politics. But, I bet you are Curtis Loftis.

I take it you’re not a professional gambler. So you have a problem with someone who’s against investment banker’s making record bonuses for mediocre results. You do realize that SC pays more in investment bonuses and salaries than any other state in the country, yet their investment results are near the bottom of the country.

What I have a problem with is a hypocritical politician talking out of one side of his mouth while slipping his frat buddy $2 million. When the truth comes out about this Elmer Gantry of politics just remember, you heard it here first. BTW, word on the street is that a big name D will announce against him in two weeks.

ConservativeGuy January 1, 2014 at 8:47 am

Confederate liberal,

1. Why is it self-proclaimed liberals like yourself make such mean spirited personal attacks on conservatives.

2. As a conservative activist I hope like hell the Democrats run someone against Loftis. Having him active in the general election will put the nail in the coffin of Sheheen, Sellers etc. He is known as the most aggressive campaigner in the state and will spend personal resources to not just win but win big.

There is a reason why liberals do poorly in this state. It is because they are mean spirited and stupid. Keep that up, we like winning elections. On behalf of the conservatives of SC, I say thank you!

Confederateliberal January 1, 2014 at 9:37 am

Talk to me about that $2 million and tell me how noble that was or admit you’re a hypocrit.

Conservative Guy January 1, 2014 at 10:06 am

Mr. Confederate Liberal,

I suppose you think it clever to allege that anyone that disagrees with you is Mr. Loftis. And perhaps it is in that juvenile, 6 grade, “guess what, I can write anonymous comments on the bathroom wall” kind of way. After all, their is no penalty for making misleading or false statements on the internet.

But as adults, being mean spirited, petty and loose with your tongue does not attract supporters. I don’t know anything about the issue you mention, but I know i am not likely to support anything that a dolt like you would advocate.

Good luck with the bad Karma that no doubt surrounds you.

Damn, must have stepped on some toes big time, but as they say down home, its the stuck pig that squeals. BTW, your post pretty much describes Loftis’ behavior which can only be described as petty, vindictive, and bullying using half truths, flat out lies, and innuendo to sully the names and reputations of anyone who may disagree with him. One more thing, unless your name is Conservative Guy, don’t preach to me about using thread names.

GOP Teacher January 1, 2014 at 3:45 pm

A Dem against Loftis s good news for the GOP, especially in reference to the Supt of Education post. We need to turn out every vote possible and Loftis spending money on a down ballot race will be a big boost to the GOP nominee for Ed post.

We really need to keep that Ed post if we want to defeat common core.

Thank You, Mr Loftis for all you have done in the interest of current and future SC retirees and in your willingness to do battle with the corrupt elements who have sought to gut the state retirement system at the expense of the people who do the real work that gets done in this state. People like Nikki Haley and Greg Ryberg have lined their own pockets and grown fat off of the labor and efforts of those workers and would have done far more harm to them if not for you.

Andrew December 31, 2013 at 6:53 pm

I alway look at pols and say, who are his opponents? In the case of Loftis his opponents are big spending insider types. To me, those are the worst of all. They cut across political parties, class and race. They are insidious.
So keep it up Mr. Loftis. Give them hell, Mr. Loftis, give them hell.

I was talking to the Treasurer one day and he mentioned that in the last election he polled more votes than Tricky Nikki. He needs to go for the prize and run against her, NOW!! We need him in the Governor’s office.

Cal December 31, 2013 at 7:12 pm

I agree. Loftis is going a far better job than I thought he would and I now consider myself a big supporter. Loftis has shown tenacity in the face of some vicious opposition to his reforms. It is remarkable he has chosen to fight the richest organization in the state when he could have just sat back as bashed Obama like the rest of the GOP pols in SC.

Loftis is the original Honey Badger! When he gets a hold of something he ain’t letting go. As a retiree I am pleased he has the Investment Commission in his grip.

When we elect an exterminator as Treasurer, we have to admit that Curtis has done what he has done everything he listed above due to the hard work of the ‘unelected bureaucrats”, i.e., state employees that the Republican Party rants and raves against the length and breadth of this country.
The sad part is that too many of those state employees still vote for the party that wants them out of their jobs, out of their homes and their children on the street.

Reply
Chris January 1, 2014 at 1:42 pm

You can call him an exterminator if you want but he retired at 40 and started giving away money. He still own his business and has real estate, and investments too. Curt and I were in school together. I took degrees that were prestigious, and am still working to pay a mortgage and student loans (for wife too). He retired 14 years ago and has lived a life most of us can only dream about. I wish I had done as well and I bet you nitrat does too.

I don’t know about everybody else but I like nothing better than to curl up with a couple of audits to read on a cold day. Where can I get a copy of the two audits? Are they posted on the Treasurer’s website?

Reply
confederateliberal December 31, 2013 at 11:08 pm

I notice his lap dogs haven’t told you where to find those audits. Is Loftis hiding something?

Reply

I am a voter and supporter of the treasurer. That may make me a lap dog to you. But it is called democracy and freedom. Sorry that does not square with liberal beliefs.

You can find the performance audit on the SC State Auditor’s website. There were plenty of weakness listed and very little has been done to address these weaknesses.
Interestingly, the SCSTO has no internal auditors on staff. The SCRIC has two full time internal auditors on staff. The Treasurer’s Office invests money as well. How are their returns and what fees are paid to manage that money?

Reply
auditreader January 5, 2014 at 4:33 pm

I’ve not had a chance to read it yet. It will interesting to learn if the Treasurer walks the walk. I am shocked to learn that his office doesn’t use certified internal auditors. In my experience, having a good internal auditor with the independence and backing of upper level management is crucial to avoid pitfalls and organizational drift. You would think this function would be mandatory for an office with the responsibility of overseeing billions of Dollars.

Real political change comes not from latching on to catch phrases and repeating them at every chance. It comes from determined men and women fighting special interest where they live. Mr. Loftis is fighting the rich and powerful and he is doing it on their home court and I appreciate that and wish him well.

“Editor’s Note: The above communication is an email from an elected official and does not necessarily reflect the editorial position of FITSNews.com…”

It’s not just an email, it actually reads like a campaign contribution solicitation.
Why are you giving Curtis that kind of free advertising? Or, is it not free?

Reply
Cash January 1, 2014 at 10:16 am

it is a political communication from a political candidate. it asks for support, which includes contributions. In the last week I have gotten them from Haley, Graham, Bright, Sheheen and several members of the General Assembly.
News flash: it is not a secret that candidates ask for contributions.

Reply
nitrat January 1, 2014 at 10:19 am

It’s one thing when we get them at our home. It’s another when they are published and the relationship between the politician and the publisher is not disclosed.
I don’t care that it’s here, just about the lack of transparency.

Reply
Cash January 1, 2014 at 10:45 am

And what relationship would that be. That the campaign placed blogs on its email list? Maybe other campaigns may catch on with that, or perhaps some of them already have? Maybe some even have the MSM on their list?
Wow, if I were you I would go to the police with this. Campaigns emailing blogs and media is like Watergate or something.

Reply
nitrat January 1, 2014 at 2:24 pm

It’s up to FITS to decide what part of a letter to publish. If he chooses to publish a section soliciting donations – with a working contribution link – from anyone, he and they need to disclose the nature of the relationship…for example, is FITS paid to run the solicitation? Is it really an advertisement?
After all, when he publishes in full any campaign letter from anyone, it could be construed as an in-kind contribution.
Are there any politicians who you believe should disclose whether or not they have a paid or in-kind ‘arrangements’ with media?

Cash January 1, 2014 at 4:34 pm

Are you on drugs? Or just suffering from dummy disease? Surely you are not asking those questions in a serious manner.

From time to time Fits, and others that believe in freedom to do what they please, will post all sorts of “filler” on here. E-blast, press releases, campaign announcements, etc.

Let’s take the guessing out of this. Why don’t you just write down what YOU will allow Fits to do with HIS site and send it to him so he will know. You obviously are arrogant enough to believe you know best and can dictate to him, so make your orders pain and simple and relieve him of having to think for himself.

You big government types want to control everything. Well, screw you, some of us believe in freedom.
